I've been a fan of MMA for a long time, though it's only in the last year or two that I've started to pay closer attention to the sport. I remember Chael's classic first fight with Anderson Silva, and I just couldn't stomach him at the time. I thought he was such a cocky and disrespectful s.o.b. that came off as kind of an arrogant elitist, lol. That's funny to me now because I realize how great of a job he did crafting his character as the heel, and my hate was real! Since his retirement I have become such a fan of him as a human being. I'm not lying when I tell you that when I heard him speak after the Machida fight, I almost teared up. He's such a great guy who has a lot to offer the world and I just admire the hell out of him. Alright, I have some issues with your analogy. Speaking in generality which we are, mental states of mind tend to reflect physical performance and results. In some cases there are a groups of people who are more "robotic/goal oriented" that will ignore their favorite TV show find their shoes and go run and that is great. However, for the majority of people that have a sense of confidence they will perform better. Let's be clear there are those who create a false sense of hype, get pumped up but don't follow up with hard work and they fail. However, self confidence tends to spawn from the perception of knowing something very well so the mental confidence in real... It is the result of repetition. I've rarely seen people with low energy, low optimism, low "can do attitude" perform well. I'd like to know your thoughts, perhaps I am off the mark. Thanks.

You are confusing mental with emotional. The person that absolutely hates the running or whatever else they may have to do to prepare but does it anyway is definitely using mental strength to make that decision.
