I substituted the vermicelli noodles with oatmeal (or porridge oats as their know in the UK), it was the best breakfast I’ve ever had. I will never look down my nose at oatmeal ever again. Thank you Nadia!

It looks like the coconut version of Kheer / Payasam in India, which are milk based. Good variation, though!

In Bangladesh, what you're calling Payasam is known as Payesh/kheer. We infact have Firni ( which is quite similar to Payesh). But what she's making is known as Shaymai.

It's a bit strange that Nadiya never mentions the name of the dish that she is customising - this is Shemay. Also the omission of some background info on Shemay seems odd too, since it doesn't frequently get highlighted outside of the continent. Shemay isn't exactly traditionally eaten like porridge. People do have it for breakfast sometimes, often accompanied with some bread. It's also often served as dessert after meals, or as a snack to accompany your afternoon tea (or when you serve tea to any guests in your house).

It’s a celebratory dish for us (my old family in the Punjab), we have it at Eid.and wedding celebrations. - using milk, cardamon, sugar, butter, shopped nuts on top, sometimes a few sultanas. It takes hours for the 4-5 pints of milk to condense down... I’ll try it your way, it looks heavenly, and I love coconut.

Coconut water wouldn't work, but canned coconut milk is just coconut cream with less fat, in my experience-- sometimes the fat even separates at the top of the can. Coconut milk in a tetra pak will probably still taste good, but will be more expensive, and the ingredients vary by brand.

@@oabuseer Don't open your mouth if you don't have anything relevant to say! I've seen you going around and attacking people in their comment sections who are speaking up against this CoCoNut. Nadiya's a disgrace to both British cooking as well as Bangladeshi cooking and she's going around and giving the British public sooo many misinformation about Bangladeshi cuisine! And that, isn't even a proper way to cook vermicilli (shemai)! Here in Bangladesh, we NEVER ever add milk tea/chai into it and we don't eat it as a "porridge". She has clearly sabotaged what we call here, a popular dessert eaten around Eid time every year!!! Everytime this woman's mouth opens up, she keeps giving negative comments about Bangladesh and Bangladeshi cuisine. She did say horrible stuff like "Bangladeshis don't eat on chairs and tables" and "there are no desserts in Bangladeshi cuisine". And more recently... she has also said disgusting stuff about the Bangladeshi identity while opening up about how she got sexually harassed as a teenager. This woman suffers from identity disorder and sees herself as a "white" person rather than someone with color. How can you say this has been "adapted" for the British audience? She's giving the British public wrong information about Bangladeshi cuisine and misguiding them to think that this so-called "recipe" of hers is from her ancestral home but it isn't. Vermicilli (shemai) is meant to be an authentic Eid dessert we Bangladeshis are associated with, not an everyday breakfast item with such an odd ingredient like milk tea (chai).
