I have a new shamano that I began riding about a month ago. For the last 3 rides I got this annoying chain rub where you could hear me coming down the block a mile away... ugh! I watched several videos that were a bit complicated. I'm a newbie and know nadda about bikes. My spouse kept bugging me about taking it to the bike shop. Well I went to our usual shop and there was a sign on the door stating they were closed and were riding around. What? On a Wednesday early afternoon? I rode back 15 blocks clicking away, decided to watch your video and BOOM problem solved. I got a feeling I would have been charged 50 dollars for them simply making a few turns of a screw driver. They probably would have gotten over on me, tell me I had to leave the bike over night making it seem like it was a huge issue with the bike. To be honest, it really was a 2 min. simple fix. Watching the video took longer than fixing my problem :) Thank you so much!

Many bike will rub in the small cog / small chain ring, but not all. depends on the bike, chainrings, cassette and something called "chain line" as expressed by Calvin Jones of Park Tools: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp2xZI2cbsyjppo There are some fixes to help decrease this rub which I'll put in an up coming video. But for now, when you hear that rub, it's an indicator you really need to shift down to a smaller cassette cog while you shift to the larger chainring. In that way, the rub is a useful indicator. Regards, Tony
@vulekv935 жыл бұрын
You should keep chain paralel to the bike. If you have 3 chain rings in front and 9 cogs in back, use 3 cogs closest to the spokes with smallest chain ring; 4th, 5th and 6th cog should be used on middle chain ring, and 7th,8th and 9th cog should be used with largest chain wheel. That way chain stays parralel to the bike frame and suffers least ammount of degradation.

It might just be me, but it seems like hi might be mixing up chainring and cog in some cases? Just to make sure I understand, the two cases explained here are: a) largest chainring, smallest cog, use front screw b) smallest chainring, largest cog, use rear screw?
@tony10speed8 ай бұрын
The placement of the inner and outer limiting screws vary with the type of front derailleur. Usually, the inner limiting screw (small chainring/largest cog) is closest to the frame. The outer limiting screw (largest chainring/smallest cog) is usually closest to the crank. But with some older derailleurs, one may be behind the other and you may have to play with the limiting screws as suggest in the section on limiting screw settings from the Park Tool article: www.parktool.com/en-us/blog/repair-help/front-derailleur-adjustment Regards, Tony

What about the barrel adjuster? Wouldn't you want to try that before the limit screws?
@tony10speed2 жыл бұрын
The barrel adjusters will increase or decrease the tension on the cable and are used to increase the performance of shifting. But the limiting screws control how far the derailleur will move inward or outward (and if not adjusted correctly, will result in chain rub). Two entirely different functions. It is possible to effect limitation of movement of the derailleur if one turns the barrel adjuster but shifting will be effected and it is not ideal way to proceed. But thanks for asking. Can this happen all of a sudden chain rub
@tony10speed2 жыл бұрын
Yes usually related to: 1. Front derailleur gets knocked out of place (bike falls over or placing bike into car or truck). See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onO3fYZ3hNKmj6s 2. Bent derailleur hanger. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3muZ52Hnt98msU 3. Worn or frayed front derailleur cable. Check the cable carefully, especially at the ends where the cable may begin to unravel. 4. Accumulation of dirt or grime in the front derailleur or shifter (depending on weather and road conditions). To clean the shifter, try spaying some WD-40 into the mech. The front derailleur can be cleaned with degreaser, soap and water, rinse and wipe dry. Then lubricate the pivot points. Also see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5fHqpWoa9Cqj6c

Although it was a useful tip, I still can't quite figure out how to fix it. I noticed however is when I push the button or however you call it past it's highest setting for the front derailer, it does push past and stop the rubbing. Only problem with that is it only stops rubbing if I hold it down, which gets uncomfortable after awhile. So I assume the line that connects from the handle and the front derailer was not installed correctly.

The video is a simple fix for most double or compact front derailleurs. Now, in your case, we need to look into further adjustments of the front derailleur which are a little more advanced. @tony10speed5 жыл бұрын
That's why I always take it out for a test ride. Things seem a bit different out on the road. @tony10speed Жыл бұрын
There are several reasons but we'll attack the easiest first. Make sure the inner plate derailleur of the derailleur is parallel to the frame. If not, loosen and re-adjust. Second, the cable tension on the front derailleur cable may be too much. Turn the front derailleur cable barrel adjuster in (clockwise) and see if that helps. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXiWo6KEetJ3hbc If that fails, go back to the beginning of the video above and re-setup the front derailleur cable. Let me know if any of these help and we can go from there. Regards, Tony

The Limiting Screws are only for fine tuning not FULL correction. Loosen the Limiting Screws all up now shift to the small ring and big cog. Loosen the front derail cable nut so the cable has no tension, on this position now set the Minimum screw so that the first ring is now set and does not chain rub. Setting up the 2nd ring is more difficult as now you need to move the front derail to the 2nd ring position. the Trick here is to simply move the front derail manually to the 2nd ring so that the chain now also moves to the second ring and small cog on the back. now with this set even though the chain can not move since the front derail is not in position.... Move the front derail by hand manually to the 2nd ring position with one hand and the other hand use a screw driver to set the Max limit screw. While setting this one hand can crank slowly the pedal so that the max Limit screw sets the position. Now that the Min and Max front derail screws are set the next Magic is setting the Cable Tension for the front derail shifter. There is no set standard for this sadly as all shifters are different and have different DETENT positions. This critical Tension Step is the most important to not have chain rub, in fact this is major cause of chain rub as over time the cables stretch. Rule of thumb is on the first ring position the cable tension has to be felt by hand and has to have resistance when pushing it but not too much as then you have a chain rub again on the 2nd ring. When you have a 3 ring road bike this tension is the magic key to have all the rings not have any chain rub. It took me a least least a month to learn everything about road bikes and now I am a master on brakes, cables, derailleurs, indexing the cogs, bearings swaps, maintaining chains and cogs etc. In a few weeks I learned more than 30 years . Play and trial it.

Hey Tony, question for you. I'm getting some rub when I'm on the middle cog in the front and the largest cogs on the cassette. Since its the middle cog on the front, I don't think the limit screws will help in this case. Any ideas?
@tony10speed2 жыл бұрын
Possibly rotating the front derailleur a tiny bit to get the derailleur cage more in line with the bike frame may help. However, with many triples, the small chainring is for the larger cogs. The middle chainring is made for the middle cassette cogs and will often rub if you shift into the biggest cog while in the middle chainring. The largest chainring is made to work with the smallest cogs. It's a matter of learning to shift to the smaller cog before you wind up with the middle chainring and largest cog. And to shift into the larger chainring when you want to use the smallest cassette cogs for speed on the downhills. Hope this makes sense. Regards, Tony

My bike does this but it doesn’t sound like this it sounds like a scraping sound do u think it’s still the same issue? It started after I got my back tire replaced at a bike shop
@tony10speed Жыл бұрын
If it wasn't present before the tire was changed, the wheel when it was replaced on the the bike after the tire change may not have been installed correctly and the the tire may be rubbing on the seat stay. It is also possible that the chain that when the chain is in the small chainring and one of the small cogs, the chain is rubbing on the larger chainring. Listen closely to locate where the sound is coming from. First thing to do is to put the bike on the ground, release the quick release (or through axle), then then center the wheel and secure it. If that doesn't solve the problem, speak to the shop that replaced your tire. Tell them that the noise wasn't there before. Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony

Hello sir Tony. I had a chain rub which I tried to fix with little knowledge. I ended up messing my FD tuning as result. I was able to fine tune it eventually I think, or maybe not. But when I'm riding the bike itself, the gear couldn't shift to the big ring. Is my FD broke or I'm mising something?
@tony10speed3 жыл бұрын
While under load (while cycling), there may not be enough tension in the front derailleur cable to get it to shift. Try turning the barrel adjuster for the front derailleur on the down tube or up by the shifter out (counter clockwise) one or two turns to increase the tension. If all else fails, you may need to re-index the front derailleur. This is all explained in our following video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXiWo6KEetJ3hbc&ab_channel=TonyMarchand Let me know how you make out. Regards, Tony

My chain guide is rubbing against the front derailleur
@tony10speed Жыл бұрын
What type of chain guide are you using and how is it mounted? Are you running a double or triple chain ring? Is the derailleur a clamp on or braze on?
@chaobian8 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, My road bike has a 2X10 105 groupset. There is chain rub with the outer plate of the front derailleur when the chain is in the small chain ring in the front and the smallest outer four or five cassette sprockets in the back. On the other hand, the chain rubs the inner plate of the front derailleur case when it is in the large chain ring and the largest three cassette sprockets. I adjusted the front derailleur many times but the chain rub persists. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
@tony10speed8 жыл бұрын
Two methods I have used to widen the cage of the front derailleur to limit the rubbing to the 2 largest or 2 smallest cogs (remember, using the large chain ring on the largest cog puts undue stress on the chain): 1. When looking at the front derailleur, you'll notice toward the rear of the cage on the inside is a small 4 mm screw (the "tail screw"). On some, you can remove the screw and place a M4 flat or preferably M4 lock washer in between the plates of the derailleur and replace the screw. If the screw is to short to do this, you'll need a longer 4 mm screw (hex, phillips or straight edge). I stock all sizes but it may be a challenge for you to find the right size screw and washer. The screw must easily screw in and must not be too long that it hits the tire. Don't use a screw that you have to force to screw in. 2. In some cases I have very gently pried apart the front chain ring plates (to widen the opening) with a Cal-Van tool #268 (when you push the handles together the other end widens). You can do the same thing with needle nose pliers by putting the ends between the plates (in the mid-portion of the derailleur) and forcing the handle open instead of closing them. Here you must use much CAUTION, in that you only want to widen the distance between the plates JUST A TAD. I've accidentally broken a derailleur with to much force. It can be done, but risky. Finally, if successful, you'll need to reset the derailleur limiting screws. Nice topic for an up-coming video. If you want to contact me directly, go to www.tony10speed.com and look under "Contact Us." Your email will be kept confidential and we can communicate more easily. Thanks for the question. Tony

Buna tuturor!

Hi Tony, I have a Giant Defy 1 from 2015 and I have a 105 2x11 groupset on it. Whenever I am in the smaller front ring and in the higher (harder) gears at the back, my chain is catching very badly on the front derailleur. I have to shift into the L gears to stop it from catching. I have tried adjusting the front mech but it doesn't make a difference. Would I be better investing in a better mech like Dura Ace or is there something I am missing? Kind regards Aaron

Please correct me if you need to, but what I understand is that you have significant chain rub in the small chain ring and smaller cogs on the rear cassette. This is true on many road bikes and is not a gear combination to be in. This combination (small chain ring and smaller cogs or large chain ring and larger cogs) puts a great deal of stress on the chain itself and could lead increased wear of the chain, cog and chain ring or even worse, breaking the chain. I try to anticipate when I need to shift to the large chain ring as I pick up speed or go down hill before I get to such a gear combination. If I hear a rub, it's a reminder to shift from smaller to larger chain ring upfront (or visa versa). Also see question and answer below from Chao Bian. Thanks for the question. Tony

i have a question no matter how far i turn my h limit screw, nothing happens. why?
@tony10speed8 жыл бұрын
The cable attaching the shifter to the derailleur is too tight and won't allow any further movement. Try these 2 methods: 1. Loosen the shift barrel adjuster (turn counter clockwise for most systems). The cable goes thru the brake barrel adjuster which is located about 1/3 of the way down from the shifter next to the down tube. See if this gives you some slack to try to make the adjustment. 2. If this fails, shift to the small chain ring in the front and large cog in the back. Then loosen the bolt on the derailleur where the cable attaches. This will release the cable. Set the barrel adjuster (noted above) to 1/2 way by screwing in and out to find the half way mark (for fine tuning later, if needed). Set the limiting screws such that the inner plate of the derailleur is close but does not rub the derailleur. Now pull on the cable until it is tight (without moving the derailleur). Tighten the bolt. Check the shifting and if necessary, use the barrel adjuster for fine tuning.

Oh yay My front derailleur shifts properly now thank you! But then it now has chain rub. I followed your vid but it still wont work.

Thanks for great video! So about the combinations. That means that the number of gears advertised for any bike is false right? because you cannot use some combinations.
@Psyk07810 жыл бұрын
The combinations you cannot use are simply repeated elsewhere, meaning if you're in the big ring and big cog (cross chain), you will find that particular ratio somewhere else using the small ring and a smaller cog. Think of ratio instead of combination.

So big chain ring and big cog will always rub and small on small will rub?
@tony10speed10 жыл бұрын
That's a combination you should not be using since it put extra stress on the cable and derailleur (and will often rub). Thanks for the question.

Doesn't work on my Ultegra front mech :(
@tony10speed9 жыл бұрын
Uno Honcho The derailleur cage may not be in alignment with the chain itself. The outer plate should be parallel to the chain itself. Other possible causes include a worn or bent cage. Some derailleur have a trim adjustment that shift the derailleur only partly over, requiring another click.

It's also possible the cable tension on the front derailleur may be too high or too low. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXiWo6KEetJ3hbc&ab_channel=TonyMarchand In what gears and chainring do you still have rubbing?

Excellent Video but you should add this info or some of it The combo I use 3 front rings 6 or 9 cassette (12 cassette is possible but careful) 2 front rings 6 cassette 1 front ring 3 cassette you still need to check your Derailleur width as some have less width ( usually the 2 rings system) Notice no 7 no 8 no 10 no 11 cassette? Those are useless with 2 or 3 ring systems. All you are doing is asking for chain rub, double up gears and broken chains. You have to use a smaller thinner chain in order to use those cassettes and this is what the pro's use thinner chains and thinner rings to get more cogs on the back Cassette. Example 10 cassette on a dual ring system that means the small width of the front Derailleur has to have 5 gears per ring pass through it which is going to be impossible not to have any Chain rub noise. This is why the 10 Cassette bikes come with THIN Rings and Thinner Chain!! Basically Divide the Cassette cogs by the Rings, then measure your Derailleur width, then ask yourself can these amount of gear changes pass through it without chain rub? 2 or 3 gears will not give chain rub but 4 or 5 gears changes of course it will!!!

Danfuerth Gillis there os no big bend : small chain-ring: the first 3 bigger cogs at rear ., middle chain-ring: the 4 , 5 , 6 , cogs at rear., biggest chain-ring: the very last and smallest rear cogs. Is there any 'chain bending' ???
