I struggled with filing forever, always could make them cut, but knew I was missing something. Buckin’ got me straightened up in no time. Lookin at side of the chain is key, I think most people look at the top of top the buy never really get under it right, that’s what he means, once the lightbulb goes off it is amazing. My saws blow chips now, not dust! I’ll be getting that 460 going this weekend IRONHORSE, got the parts last couple days. Might try some square chisel filing and make the 660 a pure falling saw with it.. Takes lots of firewood to make syrup on my current rig haha

It's helping for sure! When I first started my filing wasn't great... Lol. However I went moose hunting and i guy who was about 10 years older than I am and seemed confident that he knew exactly how to sharpen a chain... Needless to say... He sharpened my chain and took my hook away and my 30 degree angle and put a 15 degree angle on the tooth... The thing was making flower out of the cut instead of nice shavings. I had to take some deep breaths and not say anything... That was the day I decided to commit myself to learning how to file properly. I found Buckin and never looked back!

My mentor as he was getting longer in the tooth couldn't file hunched over either. So he relearned how to do it sitting in the skidder. And filed one side backwards instead of changing hands. I never could get onto that, literally different strokes for different folks. But it worked well.

A sharp edge can be achieved in lots of ways and general knowledge of moving steel or leaving it to create a superior edge increases the ability to reach succesful results. Buckin knows what hes talkin about. 45 yrs experience and I learn from him .There are millions of techniques What Buckin is showing is great stuff. For super sharp chains, caint beat it...Buckin', thanks for sharing this with folks, its great to see you sharing...we caint take it with us, if we share, it may last forever. The hard metal you run into on a chain is when someone has over heated the chain while grinding and quenched the hot metal with cold water and made the metal hard and brittle and removed the temper in the metal. That's why we only tap the metal with electric grinders so we don't overheat the metal and remove the temper.

I thought I was being fussy getting my saws tuned just right, but what a difference it makes. Oak is pretty much all I deal with (homeowner with acreage). Watching your other videos, it seems like you are cuttin' super fast and I was all "man, what am I doing wrong"... then I saw this one, cutting dead oak and I'm like "wow, that's like how long it takes me." Guess hardwood v. softwood, ya?
@manlyadvice17895 жыл бұрын
I've had the same issues. Most of the wood I've been dealing with is oak. I was working long and hard on cuts and the splitting was horrendously difficult. For the longest time, I thought I was doing something wrong or maybe I'm just weaker than I think I am. It's nice to see a seasoned pro with a great saw and freshly sharpened chain take so long in a cut.
@fabzacres-blackcat5 жыл бұрын
Yeppers ... the species of wood definitely makes a difference in cut times due to the relative hardness/softness of the wood ... I can rip thru an 19-20” pc of silver maple in about 8sec ; 19-20pc ash or red oak about 17 sec or so - same Saw , bar and chain ... and I’ve got vids to back up me #s ... fun fun fun !
@Chevron.Muskoka5 жыл бұрын
Thats what I was saying about not having enough expansion chamber too. You can lose all the "stuffing" and flush it all right out the pipe at lower rpm. Shes a fine balance without having an entire tuned pipe helping.

Great job there buckin Billy your dead on point about the saw there too the only thing is that you need to file it alittle bit more and check the drags out and see if they are alittle bit higher than the cutter teeth on it I noticed that it wasn't opening up the first time you started it myself here too cause of the muffler problem on it alot of timber fellers don't realize that the muffler has to put back compression on the engine for it to run properly there too and for you younger guys that don't know this stuff keep watching buckin Billy ray cause the man knows what's going on with a saw I seen this on this video right here too have a great day and keep up the great vedios there buckin Billy ray and bs and bc out there now too okay I'll ttyl now thanks for this great vedio too
