Chainsaw sharpening - don't let this happen to you

Sharpening my chainsaw I try to compare the cutters to a new chain. Heres what happens if your not careful. and it definitely will make a difference

Thanks for great tips. I’ve been trying to sharpen chains properly for years. After watching this - I’ve thrown away my file guide and sharpened free hand and wow what a diff - goes through wood like butter. I went back in my bone box and looked at my old chains that I retired long ago (cuz they didn't cut). The teeth were as sharp as a razor. But the gullet was not filed...at all. I didn't have a ski jump, I had a laundry chute! Went back and got the gullets. Just practicing on those old relics and haven't cut with it yet but looking forward to seeing better results on the log. You kept pounding it in my head and I wanted to slug you for it. But now that I see what you're talking about, I want to kiss you. Thanks BBRS!

Alot of work to get that chain back in shape.But you have "the touch" ...when you make that cut at 13:20 it shows right there, the proof is in the speed & ease in which you made that cut! "Guys say I'm dragging my file back..." yeah ok! Great line! I just discovered your videos last night...awesome stuff. I'm a log home builder from the Cariboo and I've been building since 1991. My first saw was a Husky 2100, I would wake up at night with my hands tingling from the vibration of the saw.

Love the old axes. Thought I saw an old Poulan top handle in the pile. Looked like a S25DA. Were great little saws. Not a 200T but for a 38cc saw cut pretty good. Easy to work on. Got mine out this year from the early seventies. Carb and fuel line and back in business. You are an inspiration for all seeking to make a difference in the world.

For me I have to be a bit carful establishing my gullet because sometimes my hook gets too aggressive. So I just have to make sure I don't go overboard.

Can be done with a punch and a ball-peen hammer caveman-style ... I prefer a breaker / spinner combo ... if ya buy 100ft reels it saves ya $ in the long run !

Andy L in my locale the loops of pre-made chain run about $32 (this doesn’t include gas/time ) at dealer ... I can buy 100’ reels and make em for about $20 ... It’s also nice to be able to make “custom chains” for other model saws ... for example a guy with an echo 590 with a 20” b/c uses 70 drive links ... most STIHL and Husqvarna are 72 drivers ... having the reel and spinner allows ya to make the guy a chain and put a few $ in ur pocket ... win / win for both parties !

I know that a wood man who is used to touching up his chains in the woods might not like new tricks, but I prefer using a MotoTool with the appropriate bit.
