There's nothing I appreciate more than a tradesman that knows what he's doing! I'm a northern Ontario boy who loves the bush and live on the water with plenty of trees that need to come down, not to mention that firewood is an abundant and free heat source. Billy, your videos are extremely educational, as well as entertaining. If I can add my 2 cents to the mix, the flake of metal on the chain after filing is what's called a burr. I learnt this from being an apprentice machinist back in the day. I've been a licensed carpenter for the last forty some years and one thing I've learned is that there's always someone better or more knowledgeable than you. You sir are a consummate professional and a natural teacher. I thought I was at least somewhat knowledgeable on sharpening chains, but never really could get them that sharp. After watching this video, I realized that I was doing pretty much the textbook wrong way to sharpen. I have the Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener and thought that using it was all I needed. And I was dragging the file backwards with pressure on it - thinking that I was cutting my sharpening strokes in half by using pressure both ways. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us. I live just to the south of you in WA State - the east side - so thank you for being a great "neighbor". I do have to give Mike Morgan a little credit because I was watching his video on sharpening a chain and he said to learn how to do it right, watch Buckin' Billy Ray. :)

Been watching your videos for ages Buckin, I never owned a chainsaw or anything but your work fascinates me. A little story for you from today, a family friend of mine has been struggling with his saw for a while, cutting on a curve, jamming the chain, well I took a look at his chain, no working corner, no gullet, one side of the chain semi sharp the other totally dull. Remembering all your lessons I sharpened my first chain today, adjusted all the rakers and handed the saw back, he ripped through his firewood like it was a new saw and had a smile ear to ear. Buckin, I have been filing the gullett just like you do for about a year, now. Yesterday when I was cutting a dead pecann tree with my 271 with its .325 RM stihl chain I was throwing chips about 15 feet behind me, including filling my shoes with chips. It did not matter top or bottom of the bar - it flew through that tree. When I am limping on the off side of the tree I often use the top of the bar to cut it, based upon where the tension and compression are. You know what I mean. After I was through I cleaned and sharpened my 271, as is my usual practice, even though it was not really dull or damaged by that punky wood. I only gave it 6 total links with file - 3 on the gullett and 3 on the cutter. My racers are still good. Because I generally file them to the hungry side about every 3rd sharpening. Some folks like LGX chains but a yellow coded RM chain is just as good. I like Stihl saws, bars and chains

Great demonstration on how you go about your chain! I always enjoy seeing how guys with REAL experience teach what they know... For those who are interested, the flake of metal is the chrome plating, the plating gives the corner and leading edge extra hardness. The file can't cut the chrome, it just removes the softer metal from the underside. I normally file with less hook "because of the harder wood I cut" so I don't get those big old flakes. Man that old chain sure was rocked out, you had to remove quite a bit of metal to get that one right again.

Try and keep 1/3 of your file above the top plate, this will make for a slightly more blunt tooth, with a little less hook, but the leading edge will be stronger. Also make sure to have the top plate angle no more than 25° this again makes the the cutting surfaces stronger.. Semi-chisel saw chain is the best option for most weekend warriors, as they hold an edge longer than full chisel, they're also easier to sharpen and more forgiving if you make sharpening mistakes. The downside is they cut less efficiently/slower. Take care with the depth gauges, if you go too low the chain will grab really really bad and make the saw really jittery in hardwood. I recommend using a progressive depth gauge tool from Husqvarna, they have a hardwood and soft setting, and they're cheap too, like 10 bucks. Like Billy said never be afraid to experiment and find what works best for you. Just make sure the chain self feeds and is smooth.

He also has the ability to sharpen for the species of wood he is cutting and whether or not it has dried. It takes years to master what he does and do what he does as safely as can be done with a chainsaw. I'll not one hand a saw anymore since I'm not as strong or fast as in my younger years, but I have hours and hours onehanding a saw. On the other hand, I do hope an unexperienced or weak guy doesn't try this.

i'm just sharing my experience learning to sharpen chains. when i first tried hand filing, i was REALLY bad at it. One of the elements that i don't hear people talking about in sharpening videos is training your eye to recognize the shape of the tooth. After i gave up on handfiling i was using a chain grinder for a while. after some time with the chain grinder my eye developed better, which i realized the next time i picked up a file to touch up a chain. I am definately not an expert at sharpening chains, and i greatly appreciate Buckin for taking the time to share his knowledge and experience with us. I've gotten more out of this video this time around than the first time when i didn't have as much hands filing experience. i now have more experience to appreciate what he is talking about.

I never worry about that little burr on the tooth. It disappears the moment you start cutting wood. But until you see that burr appear your tooth is not sharp yet. Billy Ray is right: make sure you don't slowly lose the gullet over several sharpenings. The leading edge of the tooth must angle forward or it just won't cut. Fellow Canadian in central British Columbia. My everyday saw is a brand new Stihl but my bucking saw is an old 1960's Homelite, built in Point Claire, Quebec. My wife loves the sound as it's not at all like today's saws.

He always stressed to have a sharp chain and just let the saw sort of 'fall through' by making use of it's own weight. "Relax and let the saw do the job for you instead of you working the saw" is what he said :)

Dear Buckin, yesterday for the first time I actually filed my saw to the point where it was cutting sharp and straight! I have spent hours and hours learning from hands on experience and from watching your videos. Everytime I sharpened I would learn something and get a little better, but the chain still wasn't SHARP, until yesterday. I can't tell you how good it felt to start my notch on a big red oak and feel my saw ripping through the wood, there was a smile on my face from ear to ear! Learn a little more than I know watching your videos, Your a Pro. All there is to say about that! Thank you for sharing your videos and being right on. I hand file my chains as well, electric file takes too much metal off the tooth at once, using filing tools takes too much time. I have always found it better just with two hands and a simple well made rat tail file does the best sharpening after a person develops the eye for it and learn the important things to look for to be able to cut efficiently. Thanx again Buckin' Billy. So the tree rustles in the evening, when we stand uneasy before our own childish thoughts: Trees have long thoughts, long-breathing and restful, just as they have longer lives than ours. They are wiser than we are, as long as we do not listen to them.

Cut and chopped firewood in N Carolina my entire childhood - but it was Dad who sharpened the chain. Retired and no longer constantly on the move my first purchase was - a chainsaw to go with my woodstove. Looks like I found the right video to learn what my Dad forgot to teach me (your workshop looks somewhat similar to his). A bit more practice, and a better file (stihl / oregon) - and we're good. This is the best. I run an 028 Super for general hobby cutting. This is revolutionary to my world. Cleaning the "gullet" opens my chain up to bigger chips, cleaner cutting, and gas saving. Still learning but so far pretty awesome difference. Thanks for the instruction.

Good stuff! I do the same return stroke hitting the raker. Only difference is I file one handed usually. I had to file in the woods and I never could get down and wrap around the saw like you do. Maybe I should give her a try. Off the tail gate I could see me doing the two hander. Love the show!

I've just recently started watching your videos and I just have to say that I love them. Not only do I learn from them but you always make me laugh too, plus I love the be kind messages. Thanks Buckin' it made a lot of sense. Answered a question about the gullet I was experiencing this morning when I started sharpening a chain for the first time in many many years (like literally 18 years ago was the last time-feels good to be back using a chainsaw again! :) I learned those years ago, but the memory file was a bit dusty. Thanks for helping me clean it up-now off to get that gullet & get back to work!

John Reilly has some great how to Square file a chain if you really want to throw some chips. Sometimes on a rainy day I like to set down at the bench just file chains
