Benefits of square over round for me and my style of cutting (firewood) is in felling. Making face cuts and bore cuts and less chatter. Makes for a smoother cut without the chatter or hanging up in the wood. At 60 yrs old I doing like fighting a saw in the wood cause I took the rakers too low. I've square ground about 25 chains over the last few months and am still learning. The development of muscle memory is key to any filing. Down side, double bevel files are expensive. Vallorbe files are about $28 each, but the best I've found. Pferd is good at $18 each. Takes me almost twice as long to file square over round. But square filing has made me a better round filer.

Great comparison with surprising results! Think for the time being, I'll stick to my round filing.

That's precisely why I said something about your comment of a chain being 4 seconds faster than the other chain. I've seen many timed cuts, but getting one chain cutting that much faster than another is truly works of art. Thanks for doing the comparison and making such great content. Keep up the great work and making cutting logs so much fun.

i like to run the stihl chain just because how little stretch they get and how long the teeth last if you dont hit anything with them. and out of the box i normally hit the gullet out and maybe touch the cutter a once or twice and it makes it cut quite a bit faster. i wouldnt do it if it didnt make much of a difference cuz even just a 24 inch bar to sharpen all the way takes quite awhile if you do it right lol. and ive heard a big thing why ppl like about the square files is how well they cut at an angle doing face cuts and cleaning up dutchmans it is compared to round. and it really does make it alot easier. and also where i used to work my boss im pretty sure has a saw that was built by gary its a kit saw i think they called it a k483 its a big bore stihl 460 im pretty sure that was ported with a barkbox and that saw blew the doors off stock 661's he had and weighed not nearly as much. my only complaint about it was the damn thing couldnt keep a starter recoil alive for more then a month or 2 cuz of how much compression it has lol and my boss was a cheap ass and wouldnt just pony up the extra bucks for an oem stihl one that would last way longer.

C83/C85 is not bad out of the box but is way better when you run a file over it and do the rakers on the hardwood setting. When I put a new chain on I have to sharpen it because fresh out of the box they are nowhere near their potential. Great videos by the way! 👍🏻

I (kinda homeowner) hand square filed an 18" Oregon on my stock 550xp. Rakers were Just in the sweet spot. Cutting hard dry 16" beech, my pro friend was looking at me like i was cutting with a fokkin lightsaber. That's all i have to Say.

Rakers could have been taken down a little more. But I've heard you don't want to take them down real low as compared to round filing. Good video.

Super interesting and well made video , l must admit, l am a dinger ❤to edge, many many years practice with round file, l do enjoy filing, ethereal edge is guaranteed, even after hitting a stone , metal etc., like they say “ No Hoof , No Horse !!! “ Bodey, l believe you are falling in love with MS 400C, l noticed you are running 058. She cuts better with 063. in my opinion, use Stihl 13/64 file, as against other brand 7/32, that size file sits nicer on Stihl Chain, looking forward to more good stuff !!!❤

It takes true skill to make a chain that will do a bore cut without jumping and still be aggressive. To me this is what separates a racing chain from a good chain.

Long story short, negligible differences between sharpening styles. What is a distinct difference is the amount of time it takes to do the different sharpening procedures. I know some people swear by square file, others by baby C. I say whatever they want to do to run with it. I’ll stick with what has worked for me.

Basically , keep your chains sharp . Half a second this way or that way doesn't really matter to me. Just buckin firewood . I wonder if square ground would be faster milling with a 10° angle vs round ground. Again probably miniscule difference . Good video .

I have yet to find a chain that will cut a fraction of what my hand file will cut. I buy the 100’ role of x-cut chain at a time. HL supply had it on sale around the 4th for around $350. Normally it’s around $600. It save you money in the long run

There was a short lived square file craze around here in hardwood land back about 15 years ago until we all figured out it is not faster. Also as a professional timber cutter I love Archer skip for the money. To me it mimics a Stihl chain in it's cutting profile. I hate Oregon ... Won't use it, it's junk. And the x83 is king 👑. Just my opinions....which are useless at best..

I’m completely brand new to this. What is Archer skip? I’m so new that I’m been finding Poulans in the dumpsters and reviving them and the chains that are on them have been getting the job done. Willing to learn.

And Archer chain seems to be way better than tri-link (countyline/home depot/etc three circles) with the exception of some woodland pro branded tri link in 325 narrow lerf. it wasnt bad.

What problems have you had with Oregon chain? I've used their .325 chain for almost a decade but will buy whatever fits my bar. I'm curious if I could spot the difference if you point it out to me.

@@danagordon8871 Archer is a discount Australian brand(probably made in China...lol). And skip tooth chains have less cutting teeth per drive link. I only recommend skip on more powerful pro type saws. Weaker saws can't pull them well. Hope this helped!

Just bought my first Husquavarna and it’s a 372xp and it’s needing a bar and chain. Im use to running Stihl bar and 33rs Stihl chain so I’m clueless when it comes to Husquavarna. What chain is equivalent to the Stihl 33rs chain? People are suggesting to me to buy the C83 or Oregon EXL but idk nothing about those C83 chains. Are they a safety chain cause if so I’m passing on it. Im looking for something like I’m use to using. Hate to buy bar adapter just to run Stihl bar and chain but most likely will cause I still haven’t found one yet I like better. What does everyone recommend for these hard woods in Kentucky

I thought the c83 is low pro gauge 0.50?, are the other chains the same gauge?. Not quite a fair test if so, Also what gauge is the bar. is that bar 0.50 or 0.58?... most stihl bars are 0.63 here in the uk.🤔
