An aftermarket chain on the little 18v Ozito makes it heaps better. I have a brilliant chainsaw shop in Lithgow near me and they made me a custom chain and it works great. They taught me more about adjusting the rakers and sharpening the cutters, too. That little 18V is amazing but I use my 56V EGO for big stuff but its too heavy at times. I am looking into the 36V Ozito as I only use my saws mainly for firewood collecting in the state forests with a permit. BTW, the latest generation EGO batteries have serious flaws. This is well known as they changed the battery brand supplier. Don't buy the EGO batteries with the usage gauge. EGO is not disclosing to customers it seems, about the issues with the new gen batteries.

They are rubbish , for one thing the chainsaw chain blunts after just a few hours of use, the chainsaw chain adjuster lock vibrates loose and needs to be constantly retensioned , the only safe adjustment mechanism is a 2 bolter. With 5.2 amp batteries you are lucky to get 40 minutes cutting time, completely useless for men on the land! The batteries for them are around $130 each now and 2 are necessary to run the 0zito a cool $260, unlike other brands that go on one 36 volt battery and the batteries are bloody expensive as I said. Aldi had 5.2 amp lithium ion batteries for just $29 sourced from Samsung made in South Korea which were actually better and not to mention $100 cheaper each than the Ozito muck made in China. Another thing I didn't like about my Ozito it kept on jamming even using light pressure on the bar, which is only 356 mm 14" so at best it's only a light duty chainsaw relegated to jobs around the house no good at all if you want to fill your 6x4 cage trailer with blue gum. My advice is buy a decent German or Japanese or American chainsaw and stay away from cheap plastic products coming out of China. Final verdict throw it out with the next rubbish collection 😃.

My only question is how long these Ozitos would last? Will the motors burn out over time? Still, for that money, a couple of seasons of firewood collecting would way more than cover the cost of another saw.

I can only share my personal experience and still at this stage I'm yet to have anything fail. Batteries included. Don't get me wrong, they don't get hammered every day but I use them when I need them and they're all still going strong. I might have to do a follow up video and go through everything.

Great vid. I’m a firm believer in battery saws, provided they got the chain speed. I also used to think 36v minimum, but the new Milwaukee with 9ah high output kills em all and it’s just 18v. We have 3 Stihls. Our last one is a tiny 36v Stihl and it rocks. Love batteries. Way to go. I’m planning on the 36v Makita with 14” bar. It’s a weapon.

I'm definitely more comfortable with drills and the like in battery form now and frankly don't need 3 chainsaws but I'm still going to find it hard to let go of the little echo and not have one in the shed. Realistically though, I just don't think I need it anymore. bit of a quandary really. Maybe I'm just getting old ....

I'm running the Makita 18V system and got, impact wrench, impact drive, drill, 5" grinder, recip saw, circ saw, hedge trimmer, whippa snippa and blower. its an addiction and i freakin love em all. as for power and run time...it is more than impressive. the blower is a 36v system (2 batts) and insane......but flat out will only run 20 mins continuous, cos of the power draw. the rest.....go for hours. i'm progressively selling off my corded stuff, as i genuinely no longer need it. Check out a few of the tool review channels. they all say the same. it rivals corded power and run time is no longer an issue. for camping....would ONLY go battery. My 2 Stihl petrol chainsaws, never get used.

I really don't know what's held me back. I still even keep a corded drill in the back of the shed just in case i need 'more power' funnily enough, It hasn't been touched for a looong time. It's kinda like the way I'm hanging on to the petrol chainsaw. As I explained to a mate of similar vintage, I think I'm getting old and finding change hard :) Everyone else seems to have moved over already and is a few steps ahead. I'm catching up though/ Starting this conversation with many since I did the video has really opened my eyes to how everyone seems to have a shed full of battery tools. For me though, I think the top 2 useful tools for me to be on battery are a drill and the chainsaw.

DENMONKEY no shame in finding change hard. Happens to all of us and is hard to justify when you have it already in corded form. However, being a late adopter is smart. The early ones often end up on the bleeding edge rather than cutting edge. So you reap the rewards of development, learnings and ultimately lower prices. The saving grace here and the real enabler, has been 2nd hand sites like Gumtree! Most of my purchases have been through there as brand new (unwanted tool in a big kit) or near new and all at half Bunnings prices or less!

I had a little battery powered drill 15 or more years ago but I think it was like a 9 volt or something. It was ok but for anything serious the corded one came out. I guess I'm still applying the same theory even though the tech has clearly moved on.......a long way. This thing was so capable I need to rethink the items in my shed . That will take several days and possibly more than several beers to do so. Plus like most of us, I'm a bit of a hoarder I think.

After watching a few of your Ozito 36v gear and owning quite a bit of older 240 volt power tools I bit the bullet and purchased the Brushless 36 volt lawnmower and blower ......the lawnmower is a ripper and the blower has heaps of grunt! And the 5 year warranty on the gear is a ripper!

You will find that most chainsaws have part if not all of their manufacturing done in China. One thing I would say, is always keep your chains sharp with battery saws to reduce pressure on that electric motor, as with all saws really. I have a mate that uses saws professionally and he was very impressed with the Ozito 36V.

at 7:25 i noticed old mate pulled it 5 times with choke before it sputtered, only to keep pulling it without adjusting choke. I have noticed alot of people have trouble starting 2 stroke equipment, but don't follow proper procedure. Keep pulling it when its already sputtered and you're guaranteed to flood the saw. Probably why he has problems starting it every time.

​@@DENMONKEY fair enough mate, probably time to put a carb kit into the stihl, the great thing about those saws are they are everywhere and produced for decades, and aftermarket parts can be had so cheap. Was the echo running a little rough in the video? Seems to be bogging down a touch, perhaps a little lean. Personally im still a die hard 2 stroke fan. i have purchased a 52cc saw and with its 500ml fuel tank, i can collect enough firewood for a weeks worth of camping before i even start thinking about to re fuel it. using a small saw is rather tiring on the larger timber i like to cut for firewood. I want a saw where i set the pace, and hold it back rather than waiting around for it and digging it in. But at the end of the day it doesn't change the fact it is a bit more faffing around and that a petrol saw may frustrate you as it ages as the diaphragms stiffen up etc. I respect the fact that not everyone is interested in tinkering like i do, so the market is there for them.

We have a 36v dual battery ozito chainsaw. It is great. But in my opinion you do need to splash out on the 5.2 amp hour ultra batteries to give it decent run time.

Hey Tim, I'm heading away for the Aus long weekend and we will be using this as our main saw. I'll be able to get an idea then after the 3 days away. I'd say at least 3 times or more of what we did on the day. We dropped one light out of the 3 after the test. Obviously it got used more than in the video. Whether it stays strong til flat, I don't know . Li Ion batteries have a fairly flat discharge rate and I believe they're good down until around the 20-30% before they drop off. Don't quote me on that though. Based on my experience of what I can get out of the 4ah with the pruner and hedge trimmer, I wouldn't he surprised if it does more than I think it will. I'll do my best to get some footage of it on the trail and at camp to give you a good idea. cheers Brett

Great review of the new 36v battery chainsaw, I would add one of these to my 4wd kit. I took a Ryobi battery drill with me on a trip back in 2013 and it was awesome to have in my kit. My confidence in battery powered tools is really starting to grow. I want to set up a nice charging station in the back of the paj, so I can just hang it up and have it charging whilst driving. Might take a little extra time to get through with the battery saw. But by the time you go to the servo, get some petrol, go home and mix it and messing around with a petrol chainsaw that wont start. Battery comes out the top for me! Pop the batteries in and a bit of bar oil and you are good to go. Starts every time (unless you forgot to charge your batteries)

and THAT is why I love it. The only down fall is having to wait to charge the batteries if you need to keep going. Thats where the petrol comes out on top. But they're bloody super things for camping and keeping in the car. No petrol fumes to content with and when camping, mine stays on charge from the solar panels, so it's always ready to go

Curious... When sitting around and not being used - does it leak bar oil? or do u store it w/o bar oil in the chainsaw? I've got the older outdated Ozito Chainsaw (36v) and its been great but they don't make the batteries anymore plus u can never store the chainsaw with bar oil in it as it just leaks out everywhere...

Hi Rob, I've had it happen once but I cant remember if it was the 18v or the 36v but can tell you I had just filled it before packing it away. When it's not 'full' and under normal conditions neither have. That said, I don't trust my chainsaws not to, ozito or otherwise and when I stick them in a duffle for transport, they always have a towel under them just in case.

Great review of the different options. We saw one of these Ozito 36v chainsaws a Bunnings for $299 with two 3ah batteries. I’ll need a chainsaw for my farm. I’m not interested in petrol powered saws as I don’t want the noise and sometimes difficult starting for them. I’ve been using Aldi tools and am locked into their battery system. However there are adaptors for the Aldi Xfinity system to the Ozito 18v system .

Thanks Karl. How much work would it get on the farm? Maybe have a look at my follow up to this one where I have them at my mate place taking down some big stumps. I love the battery saw and its infinitely handy but if you need all day work on big jobs, I still think a petrol is what you need. But that really depends on how long you need it for and how much work it will need to do at any one time. If also recommend the 5Ah batteries. You get about 30-45 mins work out of them before they need a charge. Not sure what you'd get out of the 3s. Where and are you located?

DENMONKEY we live in Sydney and the farm is up in the Nambucca valley. I’m planting macadamia trees on the farm as I want a bit of a side income plus it gives us a bit of a interest besides living in the city. The farm is not large and is a subdivision from the family farm. Right now cutting wise I have two Aldi tools. One is a reciprocating saw. I fitted a fairly long Makita blade to it. It works both as a handheld tool and on a pole. It’s handy and safe to use. The other is a pole saw that also has a hedger attachment. It cost $99 to buy. They both work well. We used all the tools recently. The hedger I used as a grass cutter under an electric fence we put up to protect the area we planted the trees. Not really the best tool for the job but better than using shears. Unfortunately all the grass cutting equipment that used to be there is either broken or gone. So we are starting from scratch. We watched your follow up review of the Ozito 36v chainsaw. I’m pretty keen to buy it. Thanks for your KZbin videos.

Hi steve do u always hav trouble starting that saw if so try this next time the stihl ms170 has a starting sequence full choke till it blurps wants to fire dont pull no more put on half choke pull again then should be fine after fires up and automatically goes to the run position once throttle is pressed this will solve your starting issues

I'm a solar bushy, and I'm about to get one, just for fun. FYI, Bunnings are selling a 2 x 4ah kit for $99, which is a bit cheap against Ryobi. Don't know really why I'm getting one. Maybe just to play with it. My Stihl 231 has done some good work in the last year, but it's bashed up, due to all the plastic. (6.3kg) I think where electric could shine, is during boundary clearing, while clearing up tangled junk, you leave the saw running, and all the fuel gets used up. It's a pain to keep starting it. I will be on the job using 2 saws. You always need 2 saws, because one gets caught in the tree.

If you've got the gear set up to charge it over the back and only need it for jobs here and there, its perfect. If you need an all day worker, petrol still gets it done. This goes in the back though when I do tracks, just in case. always handy for fire wood at the end of the day too.

@@DENMONKEY I worked out a major problem with petrol saws (Stihl) is that they seem to keep the oil pump working when idling on the ground. I think the Ozito only applies oil when the blade goes - surprise surprise. This is good when you are clearing up junk that has to be dragged around. There is a problem with petrol saws getting gummed up with sawdust and having 20cc of oil caught in it, then dribbling all over the car.

Good question Warren, I don't know. Someone did recommend to me on a forum I think to switch the bars, but I think we ended up thinking the main drive cog would need to be changed to do so. There was discussion about sticking the smaller bar off the 18v onto the 36v for shits and giggles. In the end, I didn't want to break both of them and called it off. All that said, from a power perspective , I don't reckon you would want to. I'd say from a power point of view, it would struggle with anything bigger on it. That's why we were talking the smaller bar on the 36v. the extra power but a bit more compact. Not sure if that really answers the question Warren :)

Hows the chainsaw holding up

bloody brilliantly. It gets a run everytime we go out camping for firewood and most camps every day because I have the kind of mates who like to use ALL of the firewood everynight. I just run a little inverter in the back of the paj to top up the batteries when we get back and I'm good to go.

Petrol is way better. If you want to build a whole big pile of firewood batteries are completely useless

strokes for folks. for big jobs I still grab my petty, for pruning work in the back yard or campfire duties, I go straight for the battery set up. If I had to choose one for the rest of my life, I'd likely still go with petrol....for now

Got mine in a Kit with 2x batteries for $299. Sadly the batteries are only 3.0Ah ones. :( I've only barely used mine once to do about 3-4 Cut's. So far. It has plenty of power and cuts OK. Run time I have no idea yet. Big CON:!!! Does not have variable speed trigger. For me I found that this made the product very dangerous. Normally when cutting you tend to drop the speed back at times to avoid kick back etc. This was a huge disappointment for me. :( The EGO similar product does have a variable speed trigger. But EGO is far dearer and of course I am locked into Power X now due to batteries. You can partially circumvent this issue by stop start cutting. Not always effective but due to the soft start feature of the motor it gives you some speed control however this is a poor and annoying way to get around a basic feature that should have been there in the first place.

thanks for the input Ken. I have found with most battery powered items,. a progressive trigger doesn't seem to be a thing, but I do agree a speed variable trigger would be very handy and not just on the chainsaw.
