#chainsawman #manga Thanks to my supporters over on Patreon, I hit my first goal!! Which, as a reward, led to a video on the infamous Chainsaw Man by Fujimoto Tatsuki! It'd be an underesitmation to say CSM has exploded in popularity, and Fujimoto's other works too as a result, and I can completely understand why.
In my video I talk about loss in Chainsaw Man. As some people know who have been following me for a while now, I haven't ever really covered a mainstream manga. At least, nothing to this extent. With that said, I hope this video is bringing something new to the table of discussion! Let me know what you guys think!

Spoilers for Part 2: Denji is forced to choose whether to save a car full of elderly or a student with a bright future. This is the classic trolley problem, and many people would fear choosing one life over another. Instead, Denji chooses to save a cat. And I think that shows how much he has grown, as Power was someone who liked cats and Denji started to care for her.

Actually, I believe Denji didn't actively decide to save the cat, but rather kill the cockroach devil before he caused even more carnage, and then saved the cat since he had the opportunity to do so, whereas the people were already dead.

The editing here is amazing. You did not have to go this hard lol. Also, imo the best portrayal of loss in Fugimoto’s work is Goodbye Eri, I love how the feeling of forgetting all of the bad parts of a relationship/person after a tragedy was shown in that chapter.
@linesinmotion
@linesinmotion Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, and it's Chainsaw Man - you either go all in, or don't bother 😂😂 And I couldn't agree more! I had debated talking about Goodbye Eri in the video but it kept floating away from the discussion of CSM that I couldn't quite figure out how to balance, annoyingly. But that manga is a perfect demonstration too, like you said!

@@linesinmotion I haven’t stopped thinking about Goodbye Eri since I read it. It hurts my brain how good everything about that one shot is, the art, the fucking panelling, the multiple layers of the movies. I had a friend who LOVED Chainsawman, they got me into the series and i binged it all to talk to them about it. We talked about it all the time and started to reread it together. But then I lost them, and with that, love, time, and friendship. I kept reading and fuck your video just hits so hard and puts to words all those feelings I feel and felt reading it a second time. Great manga, great themes, and even greater youtube video Amazing work as usual

Amazing intro and CSM breakdown! I found it interesting how Fujimoto managed to foreshadow the losses without giving too much away, often using the the abundance of chaos to casually sprinkle it in. And even when a loss was fully anticipated and predicted by the reader, the manner in which it happens still brought a bit of surprise.

It does! It's an interesting perspective. One of the themes I'm most interested in when it comes to part 1 is gaining things and becoming desensitised to them. The bits about loss are something I haven't really consider much before but the two themes compliment quite well as a duality.

the way the end gave me goosebumps... the manga often left me feeling so empty and star struck just by the sheer amount of characters i loved dying left and right. I noticed myself becoming less impactet as i just though well this new character will just die anyways. But now im just thinking that this is how i chose to cope with the sadness of losing yet another person. Really eye opening video, great job!

It also doesn't help that most Devils go through an endless cycle of death and reincarnation. To die in one plane of existence (Hell or Earth) only to be reborn in the other wiped of your memories of your previous life. So for Devils, death isn't really that big of a deal. It makes sense that devils don't have empathy towards others dying even if it is their own kind. This makes Devils like Power and Angel an anomaly. When someone they cared about is about to face death and/or die they get upset. You see this with Power doing everything in her abilities to save Meowy and eventually Denji. Angel becomes upset when he realizes that Aki's time is short and vengeful when he realizes what Makima made him do. It's only through the mortality of the people close to them that Devils take the foreign concept of Death, seriously.
@extrashoddy
@extrashoddy 8 ай бұрын
You're editing is top notch, but your scripting might be even better. "Denji is a silent harbinger of death, and a sole survivor of loss" is a description for the ages. I wish you touched on the Primal fear devil(s) who have apparently never died, making them even more alien and unnerving in the context of the story, but that's already getting away from the real point of the video. Either way, fantastic work, glad I subscribed.

Incredible Editing and great analysis of the themes CSM is fantastic but also makes me depressed whenever I think on it. I don’t cry often when experiencing media but chainsaw man made me ball at multiple points. Aki’s death got me close but I predicted it back when he first used the Curse Devils Nail so I managed to hold it in. Chapter 81 was too shocking for me to process it fully (Denji’s reactions capture my feelings perfectly). Chapter 91 just made me break down emotionally I literally had to take a day to recuperate. Also heavily related to Denji’s struggle with finding his “heart” there are many real world deaths around me where I just don’t feel as sad as I should and I beat myself up for it. Anyway you did a great job summing up my thoughts in a much prettier and precise manner. Side note: Please give us best girl Power back Fujimoto I am more depressed by the day 😭

ahhh i’ve been anticipating your chainsaw man video for so long! i’m commenting before i watch it bc i know it’s gonna be good 😌 edit: i loved the video and your editing was spectacular! I can’t wait to see what “part 2” of chainsaw man will hold bc i will truly miss the dynamics between denji, power, and aki 😭 i love found family and it was done so well in csm 🥹

Your content quality is astounding and you're a big inspiration for my want to improve editing. If I could ask, what software do you use to edit? The quality of your editing in conjuction with your script and narration is top notch. Keep up the amazing work! (PS: your witch hat atelier video made me buy 3 volumes only halfway through the video, amazing work seriously!)

Saving this for later as I'm still an anime only, but I already knew this is a banger video with amazing edits as always, so thank you.

@@linesinmotion Yup, I enjoying it a lot. I love everything in it, the music, the characters, the story, the visuals. Every scenes are also beautiful and wallpaper worthy. I heard that Fujimoto likes putting weird stuff in his manga and I'm all here for it lol (I guess, it's because I sometimes tired of some cliche shonen tropes). Also we need more powerful woman in anime and I heard Chainsaw Man have many of them which is perfect.

Now that you mentioned it, everyone who gone by the mantra of "I have nothing to lose, I don't care" are only putting up a front to live on. Santa shows the least resistance towards her losses and that's why she creepy. Even Makima, who finally get her hands on Chainsaw Man showed an opening when she finally offers affection. Have to mention the 3 brothers with Skin Devil powers feels like a cut-out to further explore this exact theme as well. We humans are bound and led by emotions after all... Excellent video!

Regarding your food for thought question at the end: I personally think we're more afraid of losing significant others in our lives or how our death will impact them. Death implies a state where we no longer are part of this world and I think that feeling of existentially being apart from everything familiar is for many more fear-inducing than death itself. This also implies the fear of being forgotten after death or in a sense totally vanishing from this plane of existence. As you put it, the act of death itself is instantaneous, but being dead lasts for waaaaaay longer and combined with the fact that we don't really know what's on the other side, it is in my eyes more terrifying to think about what or how one will experience this world after death or the absence of it.

Fantastic video as always! Will probably skip this one as that analysis hits a little too raw for me at the moment. May revisit later with time

I NEVER seen someone go so deep and discuss about the DEATH IN CHAINSAW MAN. i liked your perspective in this video! As for the last question, I am 100% more sacred of the idea of losing others... 10/10 video

I absolutely love Chainsaw Man, the manga and anime are definitely one of my favourites of all time. I haven't read much manga but Chainsaw Man and Dragon Ball have to be the best panelled mangas I've read (though, after watching your video on it, I do plan to read Witch Hat Atelier). You honestly deserve more subs/views, the thumbnails and editing of your videos are so good. I came across your channel because you were credited in Beyond Ghibli's Vinland Saga video (anime one of my favourite mangas).
