You could benefit from a pull behind log skidder. It keeps the one end of the log off the ground when dragging it around. It keeps the bark from filling with sand and dirt which is brutal on power saw chains. Even if you ran your winch line up n over your quad rack you may get enough lift to reduce dragging the log fully on the ground. I just enjoying sharing info like this. I hope it helps you have more fun😉

I have the same dilemma with aspen! We have so much of it here on our property in BC (Canada). I’m keen to see how this holds up as I might mill some up for roof boards too! I’ve milled some previously, and yes - warps and checks quickly. But if tacked down right away, it could work better. We can only hope! 🤞good luck!

I’ve been considering buying land in northern Wisconsin or the U.P. because it’s the closest real wilderness that I’d be interested in. I’m near Chicago. I’m starting to get serious about it. I’ll likely buy the land soon and then save money for a couple years and leave the rat race for a while. Essentially do what you’re doing. Any advice about how to find land that is suitable for that? I’d like year round access and at least one side bordering state or national forest.

Another great video. Easy to see why you have an issue with HEAT, You used to be in San Diego. Heck, if it gets over 82 here it’s hot. I have to admit that living in the woods with a chainsaw and a quad does have it’s appeal. It is funny today, I watching you video and the neighbors are running a chainsaw, yes, I live in an area that you have about twenty feet between houses but a chainsaw comes in handy. Looking forward to the roofing and screening. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder if you would have more fun with a 4 or 6 inch lucas swing blade sawmill. The aspen might even do better if cut smaller and stacked. I have cut cottonwood many times before and it does tend to split/crack if not stacked with airflow boards and dried enough before use. Either way a swing blade mill just cuts dimensional lumber and also has an option for a slabbing mill as well.

Not to say what your doing isn’t fun. Love the log lifter! Gonna make one for myself but I think I’ll only have just enough strap wrapped around the drum as I’m going to use...4’ should do it. I figure the extra strap length only reduces🤷♂️the gear reduction on it. Seems to me it would be easier to wind up with only 4’ of strap. I hope I explained this well. I’d enjoy seeing you try that. Lol only if you feel compelled 😃

supposedly around 3" thick poplar doesn't warp as much? maybe it was all green when built too? seems to be better siding nailed green. tons of old barns built in the US that're 100+ years old with thick poplar beams. Might want to regrease your drill

This might be handy for you too: I had this idea to use the lid of a mobile fridge, you know the ones, with the lid that either cools and warms (peltier element, thermo electric cooling) and put it on a very small space to sleep in (box bed). If you put such a lid into a tent-wall, you might have airco running at a very small wattage, mine is rated AAA as a fridge, but runs for hours on a single battery (it draws 9watt, haha). It could run indefinitely with a very small solar panel. (44x35cm).. Not a very effective cooling unit, I know, but still if your space is small enough..it might knock of a few degrees.. it´s basically what is in your car., but your car has better insulation. Anyway I am gonna try it with the very insulated box bed I am building("bedstee" in Dutch) to save some electricity and gas on heating during coming winter and cooling next summer.. Because gas prices are spiking in Europe. Already at three times normal rate and not expected to stop rising any time soon.

Quaking Aspenmust be milled immediately after harvest and makes great wood for many projects but any time span it's left bark on and horizontal in a splash path will doom it to powder status quickly. BTW, the bark peels easier than a banana when its a fresh fall...none easier.
@dereksimmons58773 жыл бұрын
As for your temperature gripe -- it all comes down to personal preference. I would rather wear what you had on chainsawing in 100 degree heat, than be in a tent in the winter with as many clothes as I wanted. But I just don't get hot; and get cold when its below 70.
