Great video man, found myself agreeing with most of your rankings and thoughts! Agreed that Load is awesome and better than Reload. Personally I would put Hardwired into B. Though it does have some great tracks (title track, Spit Out the Bone, Dream No More, Halo on Fire, Moth Into Flame), the second side lets it down and never really grabbed me.

Thanks for doing the idea! I'd probably put it as (highest first to lowest) S: 1 - Master of Puppets - No discussion, just such a crazy strong album start to finish. 2 - And Justice for All - First album I had as a kid, inspired me to start drums. Unique sound despite no bass, but the solos, parts and song structures makes it so great. 3 - Ride the Lightning - Also just a classic. Bit weaker due to Escape but probably my favorite in terms of guitar tone. 4 - Black Album - Has Roam and Misery which are some of my all time faves. And the album that got me learning guitar haha. A: 1 - Kill em All - Much the same, instant classic and great debut. Mix is a bit rough but it's part of the charm I feel. 2 - Load - I've been a lover of this album since I first heard it so it deserves A for me as well. 3 - Death Magnetic - Shame the production is trash. Strong album either way in it's own right, but I can't stand Judas Kiss, lol. So choppy and jumbled imo. Despite this the good songs are very good. B: 1 - Reload - Shares Load's strong moments, but suffers from more filler tracks we could do without. I don't think Better Than You has ever been one I feel like putting on. 2 - 72 Seasons - A step up from Hardwired, but I have never been a fan of the mega produced drum sound they're going for these days. The snare being just one loud, fat pop instead of a recognizable, dynamic snare-sound. Will also say modern Metallica sadly suffers from overstaying their welcome in terms of long intros and tending to bring in the coolest riff of the song at the halfway point... and the solos are lackluster. I'll give James lots of praise for his vocals tho! This one he really stepped it up. 3 - Hardwired - A great attempt at getting back at the roots, but I found myself enjoying more songs as a whole on 72 than I did this one. For some reason never got much into Spit out the Bone like others have either. But I still like songs like Dream No More (I'm a huge AIC fan) and Atlas Rise. Also have the same gripes with drums on this as the previous. C: - None here. D: - St. Anger - Yeah, sorry. Even if I appreciate moments on this album like Frantic, Sweet Amber and Dirty Window, I just can't sit and listen to this. Maybe it'd get a weak C, but ultimately it's just bottom tier for me... I don't really count Garage and Lulu, but I'd probably give them B and D respectively.

Man exactly same feeling! also you're so right about lars's drums sound...personaly I really don't like his sound since Hardwired...bland sound...the snare is too dry with no dynamic and the symbals/hit hat don't sound so good.

There are definitely "skippable" songs on St Anger, and maybe even Re Load. I've actually said the same thing about Led Zeppelin for years, never released a bad song on any album, imo. Metallica has come close though.

Ride the lightning is my favorite album. Trapped under ice being my favourite song from this album, and ktulu is my favourite instrumental. It’s got the raw production of kill ‘em all mixed with the stylings that would later be used on the puppets album

Nice list you got there. My favourite album is Death Magnetic. Probably because it was the first Metallica album I heard and well... it has many epic songs. I personally really dig St.Anger. I have learned to tolerate the sound. It mostly has great/good songs. But yeah the lesser tracks are pretty meh and the mix holds it back a bit. Overrall I tend to prefer their later work mostly due to James' voice evolving to more melodic and the modern production... My tierlist as of now: S: Death Magnetic, Master Of Puppets, Hardwired, AJFA A: 72 Seasons, St.Anger, Kill'Em All B: RTL, Black Album C: Load, Reload D: Lulu 🤢

Frantic and Unnamed Feeling absolutely belong in the metallica playlist with everything else. I also enjoy Shoot Me Again, the title track, All Within my hands and Sweet Amber.

@@penoyer79 I think AWMH SM2 version is better than the original though. I love The Unnamed Feeling and Some Kind Of Monster. Frantic and St.Anger open the album on a high note. It really is a great album from song point of view. There's not one song that I hate. Hell even Purify is good although most think it's not. I think the overrall sound of the album suits these "cringe" songs.

I would put them in some A-/B+ tier. DM is the best among post 2000 albums despite it's ear rape production... It's just so good start to finish, every song at least have a good riff salad, Suicide and Redemption is perfect for what I care. DM is pretty much like AJFA, but not quite there...

Agreed 1000% about Suicide and Redemption needing to be shorter. What's in there is so damn good, but the riffs just repeat needlessly so many times that it can get a bit grating. If it was a 6 min track it would be among Metallica's best.

If "St. Anger" and "Death Magnetic" had had better production, they definitely would have been more popular and would have age better. Both albums sound flat and compressed. Don't get me wrong, I refuse to make fun of them at all. Both have great songs and I still go back to them often.

To make a meaningful distinction, I would use more tiers, and differentiate between metal and rock/hard-rock. To me they started out with the metal era and everything got better with time, i.e. the composition, complexity, production/sound/tone and the vocals obviously. So it would go KEA < RTL < MOP < AJFA. Then there is a big switch in terms of genre, it transcends metal in the sense that it is rock/pop rock made "metal". It's almost like a different band, that's why I consider Metallica a bigger band becaude it is more versatile. So this is good or bad depending on how much of an exclusive metal fan you are, hard to compare the enjoyment of Metal Militia vs Bleeding Me, it's a radically different mood. Personally my favorite bands after Metallica are Garbage & The Cardigans, so I don't mind/very much enjoy the rock era. So it would go Black Album < Load < Reload. St Anger was indeed a tier below all the rest both in terms of composition and production, but I agree it made sense at the time and it gave it its personality which the "self-tribute" era albums lack. What I call the self-tribute era is the last three albums because they do not sound radically different from each other especially in terms of production and a lot of it is a fresh take on older albums. They are still good albums, just not ground-breaking in terms of style like the transition from AJFA to BA was or BA to Load was. If St.Anger is in the last tier, those would go one above, slight distinction would be : HTSD or 72S < DM. So it may be weird but my tier list would look like that : S : AJFA (most technical/most metal, the tone of guitars and harmonies are memorable, the sound of kick drums and Lars' drumming is the best there by far, favorite riff ever in Frayed Ends of Sanity) & Reload (grooviest, devilish/sarcastic vibe, very round/enjoyable sound, very cool and heavy) A : MOP (very consistant in quality) and Load (favorite song ever is Outlaw Torn) - both the most symbolic/representative album of their ERA i.e. calling it the Load era and considering MOP the biggest metal album. B : RTL (Escape & Trapped Under Ice are pretty weak, that is a quarter of the album so I don't consider it as legendary as it is deemed to be but still excellent), DM (consistantly good but have to listen to the GH3 remaster) C : KEA (great album, just not as complex/thought out as the following ones, Pulling Teeth isn't great for an instrumental, every other one is legendary in comparison), BA (some giants : NEM, Unforgiven, Misery that started the Outlaw Torn saga i.e., long slow burn immersive jammy songs, my favorite kind, some average/overplayed like Sandman, Sad But True, and some very weak: Holier Than Though, Don't Thread On Me, Through The Never, etc and I feel like the snare sound is harsh/not very pleasant), 72S & HTSD (at the exception of Inamorata, rarely a top tier song, some good songs that feel like revisited old songs, a lot of average or weak songs, the production is good but lacks personality). D : St. Anger I am not interested in including them because they are not Metallica studio albums but for what it's worth Garage Inc is great and I only listened to Lulu once then never again, just not a fan/don't care for Lou Reed. Obviously a C tier doesn't mean it's bad or average, I would still consider it very good/excellent. The other bands do not compare to Metallica, I get over them pretty quick and don't bother listening to them anymore. So their albums wouldn't even appear in a tier list in a sense. Just providing some perspective on how to interpret those tiers.

Once again I respect your ranking. Mine would be as follows: Kill em All B Ride the Lightning S Master of Puppets A ...and Justice for All A The Black Album A Load B Reload C Garage B St. Anger C Death Magnetic B Hardwired to Self Destruct B 72 Seasons B for now... This is just when ranking Metallica within itself. If I were to compare them to many other albums/bands they would rank higher. I love Metallica and I love/like almost all their songs...but when being honest with myself ranking the albums comes with how often do I listen to the whole record? Or any song off the record? Do I skip more often than not? Etc. Example with reload and hardwired there are several songs on each record that I almost always skip...as far as 72 seasons it's so new a B is good for now. Cheers!

I wouldn't class lulu as a Metallica album, while they did collaborate with Lou Reed, the whole concept of the album and the lyrics were Lou Reeds so in my mind it's more his project that he basically just invited Metallica to be a backing band and James to do some vocals to add a contrast to his own vocals. So really it was Lou's baby so to speak, so I wouldn't be able to class it a Metallica album

I'd have to agree with almost all of ur rankings but for me Reload has Fuel, Unforgiven II, memory remains, fixxxer & devils dance and those songs are so good it should be tied with load so I'd move ReLoad up to an A as well. And St. Anger I feel is supposed to have that awful quality as kind of a vibe of heres some music for your worst day... so it kinda adds a little spice to how I feel about it plus it was my first new metallica album when I was 10 or 11, one of the first CDs I ever owned and so brings it up to an A for me. 👌

Puppets, Justice & Ride the Lightning are the pinnacle for me as well. After that, we have some major differences. Kill 'em All is great and I really dug Death Magnetic. However, after that things get rather average to downright piss poor. I still have major issues with the Black Album. I didn't understand it when it came out in 1991 and I dislike it even more now. Maybe if they changed the name of the band I could have tolerated it better. Thank you for putting Hardwired and 72 Seasons in A! People were tough on HW when it came out and now people love it. HW has amazing songs and some weak ones, while 72 has just great songs all around, with Inamorata the only one I'd classify as amazing. There isn't a single song I'd skip on 72 except maybe Darkness.

Shit take. Hardwired I think is metallica worst album. That album feels forced and unispired, not raw. Spit, lord, and the covers they did with the deluxe are the only ones that felt like 10/10 composed songs. 72 seasons death magnetic part 2, with hints of reload(inamorata/fixxxer), justice(72 seasons title track and darkness had a son.), load(inamorata/outlaw torn), and the black album (shadows follow/of wolf and man)(inamorata/my friend of misery)

Kinda agree with the list, apart from: - St. Anger: for me it's a B tier and i dare say that without that battery sound and that screamed vocals it could also aim to A. I know it's a hard exercise and probably even non sense exercise, but try to imagine the album even only with Death Magnetic James's voice and sound production (DM sound imho is just a little bar above StA). It's basically the same reason why KEA is not S tier even for me. I love it, but i just cannot stand how it sounds. It may be a limit of mine, but i just cannot stand "bad" sound discs. If it was rerecorded tomorrow with even only Death Magnetic sound, i would probably give it an S. - Hardwired for me is B-tier too, despite the excellent production, it has too many "meh" songs at least for me. I mean, if KEA, Black Album and Load are A tier, again for me there's really no way Hardwired is on par with them. - Death Magnetic... i'm battled. It's not on par with the A albums, but it's better than the other (for me) B albums. It's somewhere between A and B but given the albums in the A tier, i can't but leave it in B tier. - Absolutely agree with 72S being a totally deserved A. For me it's their best album from the Black Album by far (and i mean FAR). Unlike all the other A albums apart from KEA, i really can't find ANY single song that makes me want to just skip it. I never felt this sensation again since BA (and tbh the weak - imho - songs of BA are weaker than 72S weak songs BUT they are "saved" by BA outstanding production - i agree with what you said in this regard -). - Never listened to Lulu, i just don't even dare, maybe one day i will XD Overall really good job dude :)

I think the rankings are fair. The floaters between S and A are definitely KeA and TBA. I dont think many fans will not have Ride, Master and Justice in S tier. Probably those that came to discover Metallica within the last 10-20 years that like the feel of the Loads and dont really care for as much for the thrash. Load is definitely better than Reload. Personally I would not lump Lulu in this list. It's mostly a Lou Reed experiment. The song structures are nowhere near anything resembling anything Metallica.

I pretty much agree with you and accept it, i would have kill em all and black album on S tier. I think death magnetic is the best thing since AJFA, so its borderline S tier for me. The load and reload if they stuck to the 15 songs on the demo and not broken it up, it would be A or B, but because they are not they are about C or D, Load has songs i cant get past 20 seconds of listening to, i hate it. If st. Anger had solo's id either leave it c or make it B (all within my hands s&m2 version is my favorite). Lulu subject matter is what i like about that, ive listened to it all the way and own a copy, i dont mind it, it ok probably C tier

Metallica definitely belong to S. Ride the lightning and Justice should move down to A. Kill em all to B. 72 Seasons to B (or even C). Hardwired to B. And personaly I would move Load up to S aswell. Metallica, Master of Puppets and Load is basically all Metallica you need. S - Master of Puppets, Metallica, Load A - Ride The Lightning, ...And Justice For All, Garage Inc., Death Magnetic B - Kill 'em All, ReLoad, Hardwired C - St. Anger, 72 seasons (actually haven't listen to that, just couple times, shoud be D or something).

Unpopular opinion, but I think Reload is better than Load. Songs like Slither, Bad Seed, Where the Wild Things Are, Prince Charming, and Fixxxer; are better than 2x4, Cure, Poor Twisted Me, Ronnie, and Outlaw Torn. Still love both albums, just think Reload is a little better.

I do agree with all your ranking except "Hardwired" which I think should be in the B tier. It has a few good songs, and "Spit Out the Bone" is a great track. So to me Hardwired is kind of a good album. "72 Seasons" is a pretty good album; it has more good songs on it than Hardwired. And I'm amazed how great Hetfield performed on this album riffing and singing. Kudos sir.

RTL, MoP and AJFA - Metallica in their prime, I think MoP is overall slighltly better than RTL and AJFA, it is got no weak points in my opinion. Had the same, after listening over and over again to their stuff from 80s could not (in the beginning) got into BA, Is sounded too modern to me, great album though. Yeah, I think Load is better than ReLoad. I think Load grew on so many people, it is rated much higher now than it was. Love that album.

I just don't get the love for ride. Admittingly it was before my time, was only 5 when it came out, but the band themselves did not play 2 songs on that album until the 20th anniversary shows because they didn't like trapped or escape. That's 25% of the album the band itself didn't like. But pretty much agree with everything else
