Is there a reason why you are still using a timer on a manned drone? To me it would make more sense to have a voltage display or a "Fuel Gauge" seeing as how you are physically on the aircraft. Very cool project and i'm looking forward to watching more of it.
@amazingdiyprojects5 жыл бұрын
Well, I want to answer simplicity, but when doing multiple start and stops, using a timer is not a very simple or accurate method of keeping track of how much flight time you have left. The thing is, that I started out having the battery bank fractionated for redundancy so that to get an accurate picture of discharge state I would really need 20 voltage meters, but now two flight seasons later, seeing how evenly the batteries discharge there really is nothing wrong with just sampling one or two battery packs for a good enough indication of overall battery status.
@fanplant5 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could automate the timer to start and stop according to a minimum throttle speed of a few of the controllers? Or a few ground switches on the bottom of the chair? Just curious, wonderful build!
@franks_nl5 жыл бұрын
@@amazingdiyprojects Wouldn't you simply need the minimum voltage displayed? After all, if one of your packs is nearing critical low, you'll want to set it down anyway, right?
@DirtyRobot5 жыл бұрын
Fuel gauges are not practical in this type of prototype. A timer is going to give you a end time within a known safe period. Ignore the timer at your peril. I would suggest tripping the timer on arming like you can do with most RC models though. Having to split your attention and remember to arm the timer each time is a problem waiting to happen.

Hi, With the 17x5 props, you are currently displacing 1135ci volume of air per a single rotation. With the maximum amount of static thrust being at a ratio of 6 in forward propulsion to every 10 in diameter, a 14x8 prop would give you slightly ( just less than 10% ) more static thrust (for lift), but would increase your speed in forward propulsion by 60%. If it creates too much load on your motors or ESCs, you could go with a 15x7 which would give you about 6% less static thrust but still gain 40% more in speed. Hope this helps and Happy flying!

6:28 You compared the drag coefficient of a sphere (0.47) to a streamlined body (0.04). In fact the value for a cylinder perpendicular to flow ranges from 0.7 to 1.2 depending on things like surface roughness & Reynolds Number. However since the craft pitches relative to the direction of travel, there is no way to properly implement a streamlined cross section, so what you have is as good as it gets.

*** Brilliant idea and execution. I do have a suggestion. You should consider combining several technologies into one VTOL that can fly forward at a fast enough pace to cover some distance. For example creating a very small (2 seats) fixed wing that has props for the Vertical take off and small jet engines or a different set of props that can propel the craft froward. More complicated set up would be to make the props rotate from a vertical to horizontal position but I can foresee multiple complications with something like that. If you shaped the craft properly you could allow it to land on water or ground. With your brain, you could do some amazing things and I bet you could get most of the funding needed through a crowdsourced based site from most of your viewers. I would certainly pitch in. Thanks for all the amazing videos you create.

@@jessemoody2218 Uh, no. GPS is far more accurate than estimating based on observing a car with an unknown speedometer accuracy. GPS speed *looks* inaccurate if you're looking at it while accelerating or braking, especially on consumer GPS units with only a 1Hz sample rate. Increase the sample rate and you get a more accurate speed reading. Hold a steady speed and you get an accurate speed reading. If you only care about the overall average speed between 2 points, GPS is extremely accurate. That said, I would still have used the car as a reference for the testing, but carried a GPS to log the runs to get the actual average speeds afterwards.

If everyone thought like that, we would still be in the stone ages!

As a prototype, you are right there! Now make your refinements and well, the sky's the limit! (Ugh. I know.) You are 95%, maybe 98% to having a completely viable form of electric powered transportation! The Kevlar guy wires are Genius! Probably the reason others have failed. When I first saw this (plopping quad rings) I was like, how is this going to work? I didn't realize the cables were there. They are so light and SUPER strong. (We braid it onto communication cables where I work). Thanks for your hard work and sharing this project. As Dave Jones would say, "Winna', Winna', Chicken Dinna'!! (EEVBlog, Australia). That has to be a blast to fly.

I loved watching this video, what fun and what a great design! Thank You so much! I was wondering how everything would go on a forward test flight after seeing your very cold hovering video. Looks like it was a lot warmer this time. Love, Light and Peace to You and your Family! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Thanks for sharing this project... this is the closest thing our generation has come to what it must have been like for those interested in the very very early days of flying with new untested ideas literally flying around.
