It's amazing to hear Robert Beltran perform as Chakotay again. Underrated actor.

When I was young and watched "Chain of Command," I thought Jellico was a jerk toward Riker and the crew. Then I got older and felt Jellico actually made a lot of good points. Then I got even older and worked under enough jackasses like Jellico to realize that he was actually kind of a lousy captain that had no faith in the people beneath him, and he carried that with him into admiralty.

Jellico was a jerk. He told Troi to wear a standard uniform, and he put Data in the position of First Officer. The nerve of that guy. What I think Riker should’ve done before going to his quarters was deck Jellico.
@danielhaire66775 ай бұрын
Jellico did have good points but his methods of interacting with people came off as wrong. You can have the right reasons for doing things but still be a bad leader and officer. Lord knows, during my time in the Army, I saw enough examples in various units and at various ranks.

In cannon it is stated that everyone who has served under Jericho hated him. This was because he micro managed his crew and did not give people space to perform their tasks.

Jellico is meant to be polarizing. For those who view Starfleet as the 24th century equivalent of a NATO navy, running a tight ship on a short leash is what a ship captain is supposed to do, particularly on the Federation flagship. For those who hold to Roddenberry's view that Starfleet's mission is exploration first, defense second, Jellico is trying to force a crew to conform to a mission that flips those priorities. We can contrast his first interactions with the senior staff (esp. Riker) with Picard's first conversation with Riker in "Encounter at Farpoint"-- Picard knew he probably won't get along with everyone on board the _Enterprise,_ especially children, and he asked Riker to help him if things got awkward. Jellico, on the other hand, didn't care (technically didn't _have to_ care), "You're doing this, that's an order." The lesson of leadership is that if you can't get the crew to follow you willingly, you're not much of a leader. There are precious few instances where Riker got in trouble with Picard where Riker had to be relieved, and Jellico relieved Riker in a matter of days since taking command over a miscommunication and disagreement. All Jellico had to do was trust Riker and the crew with what he was planning, and he would not do it. _That's_ his failure as CO. And one thing to note: If an actor can make you hate his character as intended, that's a darn successful performance, which means Ronnie Cox is a fine performer.
@brandonbullington5 ай бұрын
@@MMuraseofSandvich Well, Ronny Cox is a fine performer and all that, but I just don’t like his character Edward Jellico, especially the way he behaves towards Cardassians, which is not how diplomats behave, and his different style of command and decorum, and add to that, the way he had Data fill the First Officer position. How I picture Riker would have made matters worse after being relieved of duty, is if he decked Jellico before going to his quarters. Wouldn’t that count as assaulting your CO?

Janeway: Get him - he don't know me very well, do he? Given that the cast is still alive and young enough for recognizable voice work, I would love to see this animation used to depict the Doctor's debriefing from 'Message In A Bottle' before he was beamed back to Voyager.

Jellico isn't wrong (The Department of Temporal investigations should handle it. They have a ton of classified Time travel technology that can fix the issue). But Jellico sure does have HORRIBLE people skills. 😂

Yeah, I dislike them using him as a strawman. During his TNG appearance, many fans agree in retrospect that he was in the right, and Riker was being immature during that crisis. Here...they are setting him up as the doesn't listen to anyone higher up, who does all the stuff to "make" us dislike him.

I would argue that Janeway could train the "Temporal Investigation Department" after the temporal anomalies she's dealt with (and caused) and fixed.
