WIKIPEDIA AND OTHER SITES ARE WRONG
Diarmid Heidenreich host Challenger in 1996.
It was announced in TV Week as early as March 1996 that Diarmid was to host Challenger. He then had a car crash but in August it was reported that he was still hosting Challenger.
Even his own website says "1996 Presenter, Challenger, Nine Network".
A*mazing was better :P
