We didn't get colour tv til 1975 in Australia. I'm 55 & my mum bought her first colour tv in 1977. The late 60s to mid 80s produced some amazing Australian music. Aussies in the conservative 1950s grew up with what we call 'The cultural cringe." We felt our culture was worthless next to Britain & Europe. Then there was, especially under Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, a bold belief that we were capable of making our own unique culture. Then you get incredible Australian rock & great movies like Mad Max & Picnic at Hanging Rock. The history of Australian art has been a journey of finding our own voice.

"The Real Thing" is the debut single by Australian singer Russell Morris, released in 1969. Written by Johnny Young and produced by Ian "Molly" Meldrum,[1] it was a huge hit in Australia and has become an Australian rock classic. It also achieved success in the United States, reaching the top of the charts in Chicago, Houston, and New York City.[2]

To get into the American music scene back then, you had to pay for your management to go to the USA and promote the band, then you had to pay to get a tape played for the management of a big act that you might get a tour supporting. You could try it on your own, but without the finance, that is very difficult. The bands that made it, Goanna and others, they were the ones who were lucky and got that very rare break. Chisel tried and failed in the USA, so did the Divynals and Mental as Anything. The list goes on. I know that Wendy and the Rocketts manager went to the USA several times, trying to get her a support on a major tour. They ended up getting booked for the European leg of a Brian Adams tour, he threw them off the tour after they were called back for encores in Berlin. They sat around in London and ended up supporting ZZ Top. I should mention that Wendy was charting higher in Berlin than Brian Adams at the time.

We in Oz had to wait until 1973 or 1974 to get colour TV.....so some of our best early music performances are in B&W. You have to react to Russell Morris 'The Real Thing', psychedelic pop rock.....a beauty. It was produced by Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, who went on to be Australia's best known music 'guru' and host of the biggest music show in the country, Countdown. Russell is still going, his last album came out in 2019, a rock album but his previous three albums were blues. Very talented man.

At the beginning of December 2019, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing him perform here in Melbourne. First half of the gig he played songs off his most recent album and his voice was great. The second half he sang all his great hits including this. When he began singing Sweet Sweet Love, I was overcome with emotion and nostalgia. His voice sounded exactly the same as when I first heard it back in the seventies! I just sat there stunned. For someone in their seventies to be singing like that just blew my mind. Great reaction. Great song. I hadn't heard it for years. Russell Morris is indeed a legend. 'The Real Thing' by Russell Morris is an iconic song of the time in Australia and a must listen to one. You're going to find some amazing groups and songs if you dive in to the Australian music scene. Some you might know, but didn't realise they were Aussie or Kiwi bands. Colour tv took a while to reach Australia. We didn't get a colour tv in our home until about 1973 or 1974. Check out Your the Voice' by 'John Farnham'. He's another Aussie music legend and icon. His voice and this song are well worth a listen. There are so many wonderful Aussie bands and artists, far too many to mention, but you could check out the Aussie group called 'INXS' too who became massive here before the USA and everywhere. Have fun.

You need to listen to the whole song without stopping all the time, then react. His voice to this day is still superb. He still tours the country performing.

I enjoy having it broken down to explain the bits I wouldn't notice for myself. Scrolling back and forth from a delayed commentary would be a hassle

Russell sounds even better live. Saw him several years ago and he blew the house down. I had been a fan when a teenager and always liked his voice. Seeing him live was amazing as he has a really powerful voice, which I was not expecting. In his later years he has released some cool blues stuff which is great too. A track you might like is Hello Mr America which is more rock in style, but my fave of his was Rachel and Wings of An Eagle.

I'm in the UK and discovered RM by listening to a New Zealand radio station on internet radio. I love "Rachael" from back then and "It's all over now, Baby Blue" performed recently...terrific voice still.

You should hear him sing The Real Thing it is absolutely amazing. I tell you what if us Aussies sent you videos of all our artists over the years, your KZbin channel would become the Australian music KZbin channel, lol. We had some very, very talented people who decided to stay down here & became famous. Glad you liked Russell he has a fabulous voice.

I still go see Russell Morris perform every year (except the last 2 because of the damn bug), and I will be seeing him again this year. He sounds even better these days.

I only saw Russell Morris performing live last Saturday night. He's still got it at 75. He sang a bunch of his hits, including this song.
