In this video I have a look at a 2008 Dodge Charger that was towed in with a stability, ABS, traction control problem. The customer complaint is that you can't get the car to go over 40mph. Doesn't take long to see what is happening. However our little friend rust is going to make this a tough job. -Enjoy!

I bet a high percentage of working technicians would do the same in the same circumstances. They don't control the prices but they can help keep it he cost down. If they knew the numbers and their wife was the bookkeeper, and they made videos, it would come out similar. The meanies are reacting to their last, worst memory when they didn't allow enough hours or think additional parts would be so many. Sometimes your boss flip flops on you before and after while promises were made or unrealistic expectation was at work. Then, the mechanics a weenie for not pulling rabbits out of a hat, or that's the attitude he received. Naturally, he stores that experience and promises himself , next time? No promises to the customer and there the parts list even contains absolute worst case. It's smart to estimate high and hope for some luck. The lady may shed tears, but hang up after authorizing, but then call her brother who can perform miracles in half the time having not seen the vehicle. Or her dad's been telling her to expect to be taken advantage of for being female. The opposite is true and females often agree when shown the problem. They don't think they would like getting a chance to use the socket set they got last Christmas, they just want your best effort and to save their baby, really. Making the video is the ultimate back up for customers seeing what you had to do and why. It makes sense to try and get it to go elsewhere, but you know you have the tools and ability. It's nice to be appreciated for your talent and tenacity once in a while. Remember to go home at quitting time. Let it take the time it takes.

Air gun hose entrance shot from the trigger handle with air line attached. I caught the flying hose smack in my right palm. Carried the stripped of torque converter and fluid drained transmission by hand 500 feet into his garage.

Have no idea what your talking about. From Chicago too and, especially on Asian cars, the rust buildup can get very bad in the chassis and almost always guaranteed to break a few bolt heads when you put impact wrenches on them. I gave up trying to make money in my garage after 13 years. Felt sorry for everybody. Thought everyone was as poor as me. I never charged what I should have. Went to work for someone else and collected a steady paycheck for the last 20 years. I was not cut out for retail. It is true no good dead goes unpunished. I have lived it many times.

I've been scammed by the allegedly poor sob story. And although I realize that a few truly are. I've also learned that many people are extremely narcasistic and cheap. They get off on beating a tech down to nothing, then go home and brag about it.. Its their lifestyle and I've grown to despise and avoid them.

This is exactly why I would not have been able to make a living running my own shop. So many people tell me you should go in business for yourself. I'm an electrician and a mechanic, I'm not a businessman. I can fix anything, but I can't work with the public. I tried my hand as a service manager at a motorcycle dealer after I had completed my main career, and I'm not cut out for it. I need a buffer between me and the customer, either because I can't deal with stupid or obnoxious people, or I feel sorry for people like this lady and would have to take it in the shorts. No good deed goes unpunished indeed. Eric O. may in fact have this come back to bite him in the ass, but I still think he's doing the right thing.

The whole liability spiel you thought you may be dragging on was actually quite informative... I've always wondered what could happen when you do what you can within a customer's budget and it still leaves with potential smaller issues. It pains me to say that I also know very well what it's like working on cars in the rust belt!

As an Australian, it amazes how these are allowed on the road still. Granted we dont salt our roads but mandatory chains in snow or a fine. In my state is a roadworthy inspection between each transfer to a new owner, other states has it every year. So there are some real bodgies out there. Also police or state road authority can order a on the spot inspection. My 2002 ford falcon i got in 2012 hasn't had a roadworthy since then when I bought it.

What’s pathetic is that it’s easy to make iron/steel very rust resistant but it raises material cost 2-3%, but it also noticeably improves machining.

In vehicles only a few years older, an abs light would be easily fixed by a small piece of tape on the dash. There's something wrong when manufacturers design vehicles to hit the crusher a few years before they need to. For many in our society, this is the difference between riding the bus and having a vehicle....
