I have been following Sviatlana on social media for almost 2 years now and I have always been impressed by her. I have watched her evolve as she grows the group around her and I feel that it is only a matter of time before the Lukashenko regime falls and she can step in to guide a transitional government to a free and democratic Belarus. I also want to add that so much of what we see of Sviatlana is her very staid and public-facing image so it was wonderful to see a few candid moments, especially the conversation between her, Can, and his wife. Being able to share in that moment of her sharing a funny story and a laugh was a pleasant diversion for just a moment from knowing she's carrying the weight of a country and thousands of political prisoners on her shoulders. An excellent documentary, thank you for making it.

Interestingly enough you showed Ms.Yarmoshina, head of Lukashenko's election committee. Since it was her who accepted and approved the documents from Tsihanouskaja for presidential candidacy instead of her husband who had been jailed, it made her participation in the manipulated election at all possible. So some have speculated that the regime's inner circle were as much tired of the situation in the country, the rising poverty, stagnation and the lack of basic freedoms as the Belarusian folk.
@oljabaranova2465 Жыл бұрын
Really wish to agree. Another reason why Svetlanas candidacy may have been allowed is because they needed to show voters had a choice...all legit candidates were imprisoned...why not allow a new unknown name who won't appeal to masses. Svetlana wasn't a threat in their eyes, so they let it slide. If Putins agenda falls, Lukashenko will tremble. If Russias current regime holds, Lukashenkos regime will hold, its not enough for Lukashenkos inner circles to kinda be a bit tired, they have to be appaled to the point they are ready to loose everything for the change.

Nice film. Lots of material and many characters. I find it sad that the people Ms. Tsihanouskaja is representing are currently in the shadow, while she shines. In the shadow of the war between Ukraine and Russia, often seen as aggressors. Like you said that people are expecting leadership while she wants to step back. The thing is I don't believe she's sincere when she's saying she wants to step back. I wonder how she sees her role in the current situation, in this war, the situation that's so different from the democratic aspirations of two years ago. I have respect for Ms. Ms. Tsihanouskaja's hardworking, style conscious and hardy ways, yet I can't help feeling that she's been keeping stepping out of other people's background, first of her husband Sergey, then of her co-runners in the election, "three ladies" together with Ms. Kalesnikova and Ms. Tsepkalo, with whom she broke contact afterwards. Now of the couple of men advisors, one of whom Mr. Viacorka is talking in this video about her. Representation and leadership must come hand in hand, otherwise what's the point of representing, and who exactly is being represented, to whom, to show what? just my thoughts after watching this video, nice job btw

The problem with people like Sviatlana is that they never wield real power. We (the West) tend to praise them, build a nice human story around them, give them all kinds of prizes, but their best possible option is to become our puppets. Even if they manage to become the leaders of their respective countries (which rarely happens), they are played by the political actors who have actual power behind them. We have tried this scenario many many times, in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Venezuela, and most recently, in Ukraine. These were not success stories (and definitely not democracies) despite the constant propaganda blasted from all possible channels. The moment they are no longer useful, they are discarded like garbage, which teaches everybody else not to trust the West. So, we can produce thousands of such "documentaries", but at the end of the day, they are mostly useless propaganda - not very different from Russian or Chinese propaganda.
