Wouldn't it be better to SORN the trucks not currently needed and park them up until they are? There would be the immediate saving of the running costs having it parked up (space would be needed to store them) but still allows the company the ability to re-scale up quickly should the work start coiming in that would require more trucks and means the company isn't at risk of the high costs of re-buying them when they are needed. It may sound simple to me in process, but in practice there is probably a lot of things I don't know about operating lorrries (MOT's safety checks etc) that would need to be complied with before they go back on the road and how they would be affected by just putting a lorry into storage (for instance if a plane is put into storage for a long period, it needs a full overhaul to check its safety before being put back into use) The other issue doing this is the compnay wouldn't get the immediate cash flow from selling them though, which may be needed.

Suggestion. Don’t sell the tippers - rent them out? You don’t lose the asset, you gain a hire fee and have a fleet for when the business picks up.

Another option for your machines might just be to put them out as plant hire rather than selling them. I don't know how construction is run in the UK, but in Canada, that shovel is exactly what we use all the time when building just about everything from roads to building foundations. Larger compagnies ave their own equipment, but it is extremely common for smaller construction compagnies to rent that kind of equipment.

@jonathanlanglois2742
@jonathanlanglois2742 20 күн бұрын
@@joshuahill5271 In Canada, when we open streets, it is typical to have one shovel on both ends of the work site, and a loader moving materials around. I guess that one big difference is that our construction season is rather short, so when we move dirt, we want to move as much of it as we can as quickly as possible. We also use those loaders to remove snow during winter. Along with graders, they do most of the heavy lifting during snow removal operations.
@smcdetailing7921
@smcdetailing7921 20 күн бұрын
@jonathanlanglois2742 he'll then have to get another tractor unit and low loader trailer and then have a class 1 driver to be able to move it. Yes they can pay a company to move it if and when it's hired. Then they have the issue of people abusing it and then down time whilst it's being repaired. Such a niche machine. It just wouldn't be financially economical to have it as a hire machine.

I think you should try and keep the 986, what ever day the 566 breaks down you will be under serious pressure with a yard full of lorries waiting for loads and it will likely be the day a train is in! also the 566 being that bit smaller will work harder to do the same work which will increase risk of breakdowns. I worked at a busy quarry and only for the spare wheel loader there would have been days no lorries would have been loaded! you also sell and store aggregates for other outside companies, if the 566 breaks down when they are in to collect products this could leave them looking elsewhere in the future for a more reliable company.

It takes hard work to build up kit, don't sell it off unless you're desperately backed into a corner. The tippers can be busy within hours as that just proved and the machines will be needed when the other machines go down. Only time selling kit makes sense is to upgrade to more kit.

On a class 153 (which your train is) the “parking brake” is spring applied and air released I.e. you will need 1 bar of air in the main reservoir in order to release it. Having said that I’m a little surprised considering your train was “just switched off” that you couldn’t put a boost pack across the start batteries and get it to move itself? Might need a few systems isolating but would be possible I would have thought. They were pretty reliable if hateful units

One thing Daniel sort of alludes to is the ability to pull levers in a well capitalized business. When thngs are super rough, you need to have open options (like selling off a bunch of equipment) as escape hatches from your situation. Being so narrow in scope that you cant turn is a dangerous path through entrepreneurship. Good lesson!

As a fellow business owner I know there are things happening behind the scenes that we as your viewers won’t know especially regarding finances BUT I think getting rid of the kit especially the loader isn’t the greatest idea. I think you should try and add them to Hire side of business. What goes down must come up and in business the bottom never lasts forever and as you mentioned replacement cost will be substantial. Just my 2 bits but I am sure either you will make the right decision.
@travpark8163

probably a bit late now; but ever thought of not selling the 5 bits of kits, and putting them in your rental section for abit?; maybe that way you could keep the kit for when picks up, and still ahve them as apart of the "value" of the company? But for the last few months, i have been wondering about asphalt; how much more of a change up would you need to do that, and maybe see about contracting to heathrow near you, as you would be right round the corner, and able to have the trainload of material on hand as well (just thinking, and wondering as im just curious about it)

The biggest problem with yard machines that are not busy, though good for breakdowns etc. not having a dedicated drivers leads to missed greasing etc. Plus damage that always blamed on someone else. I ran three items of plant in a yard that ran 24/7, no one else greased them or even refueled them and if I hadn't topped one up to full would be put in the shift report. Another thing they did in winter was to leave them all ticking over heater on so they were kept nice and warm, hence the no diesel.

I would have to double check CoP 44 (storage of gas bottles) however I think from memory you should have flammable gas cylinders stored separate from non flammable. Cage and signage look ok but “generic” , again I think it should have the type of gas listed on it. Finally the cage should be locked to prevent unauthorised access. It looked like you had storage bins behind the cage, just make sure there is non combustibles. Last point, I had to google if fine cement dust is flammable (like flour dust) , google says no which is great, if it was you would have to move the cage to a new location. You may want to consider adding a jersey barrier in front of the cage due to the high traffic area , minimising chances of vehicle collision. For the entry into the cement tank (confined space) I hope you had a risk assessment in place, I would have hoped to have seen a personal oxygen monitor on you - there could have been lower oxygen content in there and you would have passed out within a few breaths, and so would anyone entering to rescue you (appreciating you had harness on). Please be safe around confined spaces. Oxygen monitors would be a good standard. Sorry couldn’t resist commenting, great content and I love your work and insight into the business.

leave it till the last minute to clean the hatch to get inside, what a tidy lockout, bit of printed paper and no gas detection haha i like watching ashville but man sometimes your better off getting the proper trades in to do the job, because like no offense but do you even know what your looking for inside? im assuming the screw would have multiple center bearings that should have been checked. Like the motor last week, any sparky would have been able to pick up the motor was phasing. Tell you right now that small motor is not worth rewinding and you could do the 2 bearings yourself.

@@DanielWoolley literally, just stood there and said the screw is down there. Could very well be a collapsed center bearing support allowing the weight of the product to push the screw into the wall and locking the motor.

Keep going and weather it out fella! We’re in a very similar position albeit different industry. It’s wild to think the same things going through our heads, with a big yard move etc is also going through yours in the same situation! Madness! Always, it’s Monday and I’ve been in the yard all day 👌

Selling stuff you wither no longer use or rarely use makes perfect sense, especially if you have money flow issues. As work picks up, you can hire new equipment until you either buy new trucks or lease. I have no idea how the costs stack up, but leasing means you dont have the extra costs involved with trucks you own personally.

Hey team ashville, awesome job on this video, liked the editing when Daniel was in the silo, atmospheric! On the note of downsizing the fleet - obviously no one here has the real data, and really sometimes you have to take a step back to take two forwards in better conditions, but as a lot of other watchers noted, dont let it become an artic issue! Also, sometimes expansion can help smooth things out when you are in super competitive markets like London. Maybe Foxy/Michael/ other contacts would have use for them on a temporary basis. You guys have got this! Keep up the hard work!

In the Silo I was waiting for "Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was already a man. And by then, it was nothing to me but blinding."

for me.... the silo issue is likely the access point its self. likely a bad seal on the inspection port. im thinking this because there was such a large amount of clumps of cement that had fallen when you banged it off. i think water is slowly getting in there and small clumps are breaking off

Good work Daniel, proper leadership with the cement silo. Would it not be worth a small scaffold roof over the silo lid?

From experience - don't sell all the excess vehicles and plant. Maybe 1 of each to fund 1 new piece of newer equipment. Then focus on getting the modular offices in and installed, selling off the current container offices (or offering them as plant hire site offices). The price paid for that modular unit was good value ultimately for staff environment and welfare. Ditch the train idea and cut losses. In a yard or unit, every square foot needs to generate revenue first and foremost. We made a themed reception area at our unit and ultimately for the amount of walk in work we have, it's a very poor ROI and only done since it's a much much smaller area. I know the train as a waiting room and containers as an office skirt business rates costs but that train is a hell of a size to be effectively paying storage for over the course of the site lease.

I’m betting that the BIG MOVE, caused old cement to fall in from the hatch when it was picked up and put down and that sound they heard when it moved a big piece was a piece of that old cement… it probably could use a new hatch and seal…

Glad the silo was in touch d condition, you don't want to be replacing that any time soon. That refurbishment project looks very interesting, shame you can't fit a shute or external lift, would have been so much easier to move stuff. Unfortunately what some people don't realise is that there is no such thing as a money tree, if there was and you had one I don't think you'd be working in a wet and cold London. 🤣😂👍

Probably more important than the cost of buying new kit is the time it would take to get your hands on new trucks or a new shovel. No point having excess kit sat their doing nothing. But likewise, no point short term gains if it causes long term damage. Oh to have a crystal ball!

If the plan is to chuck the train on the secondary line, have you perhaps looked into getting the train shunted down to your yard by rail? I’m sure GBRF can hook it up behind the wagons ;)

Tippers. Youll be in the same situation as the artics. Idea, take them off the insurance, sorn them, and take them off the O license. Park them in the corner of the yard. Can very quickly put them back out, if you say have another one breakdown or a quick up turn in work. Shovel and excavator, is it worth seeing if they could go on the hire fleet? Carrage, the transport company will vastly prefer to load on to a railhead over butting up to a track panel. Been there and done that. It aint fun... If you want ya own ashville shunting loco... i know some people.....

If the train carriage is going to be used as a reception area, wouldn't it be better placed outside the offices, which would free up space at the entrance to the yard?

It's near the entrance to limit how far visitors go onsite unaccompanied/not booked in etc. Whilst I get his "vision" behind it, like many of his other purchases, it is an expense that might be considered questionable given the situation discussed in the video & it's good to see that it is being "deprioritised". Don't get me wrong - I admire his passion, dedication, etc., but he does seem to allow himself to get distracted at the cost of core activities and ensuring that the basics are properly dealt with.
