Probably the heaviest moment in DMC5 was Lady's concern about Nero wanting to kill Vergil. "You never recover from that." Unfortunately, that was the only moment she had in the game. So sad to see Lady essentially become a throwaway character.

@DevilMayAsian4 жыл бұрын
@@vitocorleone2413 I'm not sure if fan service is even being served here. Lady is just there for a partial nude scene, her incredibly apathetic moment with Nero and....that's it. Kalina Ann 2 could have come about without her presence, but if a nude scene is fan service, that's pretty lame. At least with Trish, her transfer of the Sparda sword was important to the story, and her chat with V was good. She had some insight on the Qliphoth root and the Apple's connection to Mundus. She had plenty to offer, I felt. Lady, on the other hand, just feel short as a contributing member of the party.
@solracstormhunter30234 жыл бұрын
@@DevilMayAsian I'm actually still disappointed of the lack of use Lady got in the game and many share this opinion, on the other hand I'm asking myself "what could Lady have provided to the story or the game itself, that the others couldn't?" I mean "Fighting scenes?", for what time? She was captured like Trish and lost her main weapon, that's was the very reason or "excuse" for why the Kalina Ann 2 was even created. And information about Vergil or references to him? She only knows about the Temen Ni Gru incident and bringing that up is waste of time for the audience that already followed the third game. What the most misunderstand is that Devil May Cry 5 is solely focused on Dante's, Nero's and V's/Vergil's perspectives and character developments. Nico's screentime as well is based on her introduction since it's her debut and her whole purpose is to support Nero after the loss of the Devil Bringer. Long Story short: Devil May Cry 5 wasn't meant to be heavily focused on Trish and Lady on the first place and their involvement could be justified with that their absence would else rise a lot of questions and contradict the story. If they are going to have their spotlight, than that would fit in a story, that doesn't center in the relationship between the Spardas.

The frase "blood is thicker than water" is a simplification of "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." I have a older brother who is very abusive mentally and psychically, I always felt like it was my fault for making him hate me. We were very close when we were younger but then he just started hitting me and insulting me all the time, I coped with my pain by eating. He had his friends bully me and I took all of it thinking that it was my fault but now after so many years I realized that his words stopped hurting a long time ago and that he can try to look tough and look bigger but I'm not scared of him anymore and I don't want anything to do with him anymore and it hurts me because I love him but he's not the brother I once knew and he will never be. I wouldn't say he failed the first time. He did become a demon after killing Lady's mother. Seeing as Sparda requires the weilder to have a great amount of physical and mental strength and to an extent Arkham could weild it, until he lost control becoming the boss we had to fight. I can only assume that making a family, having a child was his idea. Arkham says he named her, something mother's usually do unless having a child was the father's idea. It shows a level of investment. While Lady's mother may have been the better parent all signs show that Akham probably planned Lady's birth so he would have two sacrifices. One to become a demon and another to claim Sparda's power. As well I don't think Lady still harbors that sort of self doubt by Devil May Cry 5. Rather I feel she is more speaking from experience. She isn't saying that she herself never recovered but rather the trauma was so great that she doesn't believe Nero could live with the act. Lady broke down after shooting Arkham. Someone she hated for so long. She lost control of the feelings she had kept deep down and guarded for so long. Someone weaker more emotional would have probably snapped. Lost all since of purpose, a reason to live. Nero is more emotional, holds a lot of guilt for not being strong enough to save Credo, similar to Lady, and has clear strong attachments to what he sees as family, adopted or blood. He probably would not have the strength to deal with killing his father.

I love this series so much, as it’s actually helped me get over some of my own person issues. One small thing though, I do think that encountering Dante has a much bigger effect on her than people really give it credit for. If Lady hadn’t met Dante, she wouldn’t have had anyone to empathize with her during her crusade to kill her father, and would arguably be worse off, still trying to kill demons in order to feel whole. I say this from personal experience (though not to the extent of Lady thankfully). Also, I think it might be possible that Arkham did care for Lady and Kalinna Ann (I probably misspelled that), but became so wrapped up in his obsession with achieving power that Lady killing him really was a surprise. Speaking s someone who got out of a very abusive relationship, the abuser may not always realize what they are doing is hurting the people that they care about. I know this is trying to justify the behavior of an obvious bad guy in the series, but you can never get a full grasp on these things without observing things from all perspectives. Thank you fore coming to my ted talk.

Just a thought: Arkham might have had some form of Lima Syndrome during his marriage. Granted, Kalina Ann likely didn't realize she was being held "hostage" in this relationship, but if we're making the logical assumption that Arkham knew who she was and what he wanted to use her for, it's possible that the reason he failed the ritual the first time was because he had allowed himself to form some emotional bond with her. To add to that, there's a lot of chemical/biological stuff that happens during romance/sex to promote bonding with a partner, so it would have taken a lot of mind over matter for him to work past that to complete the ritual. Lastly, he was in this for the long haul. If Lady was old enough to remember her mother being killed, then Arkham was executing his plan for years, courting his wife, doting on his daughter. It's hard not to form an attachment to something that's been a mainstay in your life for so long. Anyway, my two cents. Thanks for the video! This was an insightful and well thought out piece.
@cloud-lbc4 жыл бұрын
interesting speculation indeed, while it's hard to say since we've seen so little of him outside of outrightly demonic, this IS sth to consider too. I wonder if that's why the 2nd time he needed the priestess's blood, he only took from Lady's leg, barely an inconvenience to her instead of just kill her. Maybe your theory is right, or maybe he was just making sure there would still be blood for him to use if there was any problem even further. Either way, it works for me

I would pose a disagreement on Lady having Survivor's Guilt. I don't think she regretted killing her father because she had survivor's guilt. I think she regretted killing her father because she had the one power humans have that demon's don't. Empathy and love. Not to mention that when you get older, you can get life experience and understand why someone would so desperately want power. Which is part of why Dante fascinates her so much. Dante's version of what defines power is a complete 180 from what everyone else considers power. Even in our world, our sense of power never really seems sourced in empathy. So I think its mostly Dante's influence and her own maturity that says to Nero "You'll never recover from that" as she still technically killed a person. *Albeit I use the term "person" very loosely.* To her, killing something with anything resembling a remote amount of humanity bothers her and rightfully so. So I think she's just a really kind and good human being. I wouldn't justify killing my mother and wouldn't recover from it, because despite being emotionally abusive, I can still see the humanity within her. So its a lot more subjective than the concept of Survivor's Guilt would lead on.
@ChampionAnalysis4 жыл бұрын
Hey thank you for your addition to the discussion. I see your point that perhaps Lady's regret may be from her recognizing how the action itself can be considered inhumane while she identifies with her humanity more. Human compassion and empathy vs demonic superiority is an established theme within the game that Dante shows a lot of with his own actions. I can see this being an answer from a storytelling perspective. However, I still believe Survivor's Guilt can be applied when trying to see this from a psychology perspective because of the ownership she takes. She immediately lashed out towards Dante at the idea that he killed her father and shouted how it was her responsibility to do it. I don't think that kind of response can come from someone who didn't feel guilt. Again I just wanna say thank you for sharing your own perspective. I know the internet can get volatile sometimes when it comes to peoples' opinions so I don't want you to think your disagreement isn't welcomed.

While she is more laidback and carefree in the events post 3, there is an important detail to her character found in one of the Morrison notes. To paraphrase, "I haven't dug so deep into their [Dante and Lady] past, given those are the boundaries they have set. But I did manage to hear a little bit from her. It happened one night after she had a little too much at a bar. She said she had regret over what she had done. --- I should also note that she has no real residence, but rather lives from motel to motel." It seems that, ironically, despite being more *motivated* (woah, where'd that come from?) than Dante when it comes to living like a responsible and hard working adult, she still puts up the same facade he does when it comes to facing the mental issues of their past. Like many characters in this series, they do not open themselves up in any healthy matter.

This means that Nero wasn’t born until I believe anywhere between dmc 1 and 2. When I saw Nero’s Devil Trigger in dmc 4, the susano thing behind Nero looked a lot like Nero Angelo, his father from dmc1 also leading me to believe that Nero was born between dmc 1 and 2. As an abuse survivor... god I hate that word, it left me willing to take anything. With a second side with extreme hate and anger, go figure it has super strength too. It left me craving total control over everything. But when I finally opened up to people I cried for literal hours. I think it was two? Might have been three. There’s a part of myself who hates how weak I was to let myself be hurt. I love lady’s story because of how I can relate to it. I made a new family, one with only people I can trust. But it was hard to actually trust anyone. It took two years for me to finally trust a single person. I think in the years we didn’t see lady wasn’t at dmc and she wasn’t partnering with anyone. I don’t even think she fought demons during that time for the most part. I think she just wandered alone. A lot like myself when I first acknowledged the abuse. I stopped sword practice and in a whole anything I could see as violent. It was to ask one question, “is this really necessary? Who am I really doing this for?” And I believe she found it based on the fact she still hunts demons. It’s cause she enjoys it in truth. And I also think it’s her way to make amends for what her father did to the world and to her. If she can kill every bad demon she can save everyone from her fate. Not in some lofty savior way but in an empathetic, almost selfish way of “no one should suffer but me”.

After watching the whole video, I have to agree with you, Nimbus. She does need someone to tell her that none of what happened to her was her fault. The biggest question I have is short, but it may be the hardest to answer; “Who shall be the one to tell her?”

Someone with enough patience to handle that trauma.

Champion Analysis Okay, but who specifically? As of Devil May Cry 5, Dante and Vergil are both stuck within the Underworld, duking it out and becoming brothers for the first time in forever. Even if they weren’t down there, there are still some things to take into consideration when dealing with Lady and the rest of the DMC cast. Dante is definitely a compassionate guy, and does genuinely care for others. But even with his age, I don’t think that he would be that person Lady needs, and that’s due to the fact that, as badass as Dante is, he does certainly lack the patience required to help her through her trauma, regardless of the similarities that their situations have. Vergil doesn’t have the patience for that either, and would simply add on Lady’s guilt of not being strong enough to save her mother. He’d brush it all off, saying that if she couldn’t handle it on her own, then she was useless. For me, that leaves Nico, Trish, Kyrie, and Nero. Maybe she has friends outside of the office, but as far as I am aware of, those are the 4 people that might be able to properly help her. But even then...there’s still some uncertainty of which of these characters, or a new character entirely, would be the one to help her. As you said, a person with enough patience to deal with Lady going through her trauma would definitely be of great help. My issue is that I am a bit unsure of who it would be to even have that kind of patience, as well as no small degree of empathy, amongst the main cast of DMC characters

I would daresay Dante, post Dmc 1 dante I mean, could have been an option since 1) he was there and would understand and 2) he knows her, at least to a certain extent, having been forced to kill Vergil. Obviously this isn't the case anymore since Vergil is alive in Dmc5 but before that if he was willing to talk about it with her.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that you were one of the DMC writers. When it comes to breaking down characters to their core and explaining them piece by piece, you might just be the only person on the face of her two can make it sound fun and also professional.

Lady may even be quite possessive. In DMC3, she hesitated giving Kalina Ann to Dante, asking for his name first, and when he returned Kalina Ann and asked about possible late charges, she said that she'll think about it. In DMC4, she gives Dante and Trish just a small roll of money in a suitcase for dealing with Sanctus and the Order, and when accompanying them on a new job, Dante told her to not expect her to get paid (implying her possesiveness/greed). In DMC5, she was bothered that Nivo gave Kalina Ann II to Dante without asking her, tried to get Dante's office for herself, and was much more pissed off than Trish to see that Morrison has the deed to Devil May Cry.

I almost cried from this video, being an abuse survivor. Perhaps that's the underlying reason I love lady as a character, because of relation to the circumstances, that happened to no fault of any abuse victim.

I think they are setting up something with Trish and Lady. - They were underused in DMC5 - They both lost their primary weapons (Sparda and Kalina Ann) - They have a gig (DMC 5 ending scene) - They have enough backstory to provide compelling arcs - There were hidden files in the game called "Ladies' night"

So, despite us never getting Lady's issue of the prequel manga, we can speculate about Lady's scar on her face. We never see her with this scar in the manga. It's only during the events of DMC 3 do we see it. And given how Lady knows Arkham killed her mother, it would make sense if he was the one who caused it. He literally and figuratively scarred her.

Killer Instinct: Jago & Orchid Soulcalibur: Kilik Tekken: Jin Kazama Street Fighter: Juri Han Bloody Roar: Yugo the Wolf Darkstalkers: Morrigan Aensland

Great vid. Much as I hate to say it, Dante may not be able to comforr Lady as he's not willing to be vulnerable towards her or Trish. He usually has the lone wolf facade everyday. If it was Trish, Morrison or Patty, it would work. I don't expect Dante to open up about his weaknesses to anyone as he's afraid to let anyone in who tries to get close to him. Maybe if Lady wasn't putting on a tough girl facade and expressed how she truly felt, the idea of comforting Lady would work. Of course, I plan to do that with my first DMC fanfic. Except in my fanfic, the DantexLady thing won't happen as I can't see it as a possibility. Of course it's up to Capcom. But like you said in your retrospective video of Dante's Humanity, Dante is not likely to go for a serious relationship.

Nice job, again. You're probably right about Arkham planning everything from the beginning, too bad they didn't released the Lady manga.

As always, spot on in your analysis. My clinical experience has mostly revolved around victims of abuse, and most of what you described I've seen in the field without a doubt. I've had female patients who were terribly abused by their fathers, and as you said, without the dark fantasy element, Lady definitely shows the signs of having being victimized as a child. Man, the scene where Arkham beats her is so painful to watch and it makes you wonder if it was the first time he did that. It's interesting to note, in terms of the construction of the character dynamics, that they even got Arkham right as a parent with clear sociopathic traits. I really like her as a character. She's a complex person, who keeps carrying the wounds of her past, but who found a way to find meaning in being alive and protecting others. She's definitely one of my favorite female characters in videogames. You should also do Arkham in depth. What you brought here was superb too.

One thing that always bugged me in the back of my mind is: In DMC3, Arkham had the 2 amuletsand the Force Edge. He took on Sparda's image, but the Force Edge didn't evolve into the Sparda. I remember the file saying he became the blob and tentacle creature (because capcom sure loves those) because of the darkness in his heart, but I always wonderes, was it because he wasn't a demon of Sparda's bloodline or was it because he was only a human albiet a magically gifted one. Scarred face hinted at something supernatural due how it pusated, perhaps he gained some demon power through magic (like the sacrifice of his wife and villagers) Just a theory

In case someone else hasn't said it in the dmc 3 art book it was confirmed that Arkham was the desendent of the priestess sacrificed by Sparda not kalina ann

Someone that might be interesting to do a video on is Quna from Phantasy Star Online 2, since while it does require playing through the story up till I'd say near the end of episode 2 if you want to be thorough (and the story is long AF took me almost 4 days just to beat the three episodes in the game already and there is at least two more on the way), Quna might be a fairly interesting character to cover, since out of all the characters in the game you can interact with, she's probably the most complex character in the game.
