Dale Earnhardt was as dominant in 1987 as Jeff Gordon was in 1998. Earnhardt clinched the 1987 championship with TWO races left.
@KK-ex5zu5 жыл бұрын
Earnhardt straight up dominated that year! He was expecting Tim Richmond in the Rick Hendrick Folgers car with Harry Hyde as crew chief to bring it for real. The previous year Earnhardt won the championship but Tim Richmond won the most races and came close to taking the Cup. Richard Childress and the boys on the team made sure they were ready for warfare over the winter going into the '87 season!

I watched Dale race this car at LEE speedway in NH. His hood got loose and came up over his windshield blocking his view. He finished the race with his head hanging out the drivers side and still won the race. Fast forward to this past weekend at White Mountains Motorsports Park, Jason Corliss battled with D.J. Shaw in the ACT tour and Corliss' hood did the same damn thing Dale's did and he won the race by about a bumper length. Insane race and crazy that I saw this happen twice.

Should have won the Cup if not for Gordon and a helpful rule change every week for Chevrolets (half the times the Pontiacs got the screws from the rule changes, too.)That was when Roush was killing it with Martin/Hmiel then Fenning and Burton/Parrott then Stoddard in the late 90s. They won on all types of tracks against hall of fame talent. In terms of win count and average finish, definitely, although the margin he had over the runner up was bigger in 1994. That year, helped by the accident that ruled out Ernie Irvan, he beat Mark Martin by 444 points (despite the fact that he only scored 4 wins and had an average finish of 8.0). I guess another part of the reason for the extent of the gap was because of the distraction the Tyre War between Goodyear and Hoosier

Not saying that there isn't things that need to be fixed, but how many times did they say "only 3 cars" or "only 4 cars" on the lead lap? So people complain that the races are boring...how boring do you think it was in 1987 and in those years regardless if someone dominated...it was very common for there to be 10 or less cars on the lead lap.
