Elliott several years later admitted that he was trying to wreck Earnhardt down the frontstretch because he was fed up at being blocked and being unable to get his car under Dale in the turn. He felt Earnhardt should've let him pass due to him clearly having the superior car and the fact is, Elliott would've still likely won the race if he didn't lose his cool because he clearly had a faster car than Dale and I'm certain would've eventually been able to get under him. Earnhardt was better than everyone else because he had an incredibly potent combination of determination and brains. People talk about how aggressive he was and his will to win, but people don't talk nearly as much about how smart he actually was and how intuitive he was as a driver.

Like this dude said, this race is a perfect example why Earnhardt had all of the fans, he had far from the best car for this race, yet he did it, it's a rare driver that can actually get a little more out of a car than its got, this guy did it all the time, I miss him so much, I was lucky, I did get to live this, good job of commentating.

I love the commentary you do on these vids. Genuinely one of my favourite channels because I learn more about indycar and nascar (I've really loved watching indycar the last 3 seasons and I think it's so much better than f1 now). Going to the 500 this May now (I'm from Ireland). Love your vids, very appreciated

So, looking at how Bodine and Earnhardt went into turn 3 on the first lap... that was Dale's fault lol (2:32) We all know these guys weren't writing Christmas cards to each other already, and they both sailed it into the corner. You can see that Geoff is on the white line when he turns in, but Earnhardt puts his driver door right on Bodine's right side. These cars didn't rely on side force as much as today's cars, but aerodynamics still exist. With no air on the right side of Geoff's car, he starts losing grip and coming up the track. From there, that was just two awesome drivers showcasing their skill. I think Dale *rubbed* the wall with his right rear bumper, and the save Geoff made didn't even make logical sense. But that definitely happened because Dale literally didn't give Geoff an inch. Even a quarter lane further up the track and he might have made the pass, or at the very least held his position lol That move to start the shootout was dumb on Geoff's part tho. Like, there's a car there, don't go to the bottom of the track lol Here's the thing, tho. Earnhardt would be the first to tell you he was an aggressive driver. That's how he became known as The Intimidator. And a lot of what Bill had to say was true. Dale nearly wrecked on lap 1. Dale pushed Geoff out front for the contact between him and Bill (although Bill shouldn't put the blame on Dale for that one). Dale cut Bill's nose off in turn 2, and he tried to block on the front stretch when Bill had a run. We love him for it, but you can't always believe what you see through those rose-tinted glasses lol

A fun fact about this race is that legendary college football announcer Keith Jackson was on the call. Until the early 90's, Keith Jackson often did other sports including many NASCAR races & even a few Monaco GP's as part of ABC's Wide World of Sports during the college football off-season.

Why people talk about this and not when Earnhardt quite literally cut a corner and went through the grass or dirt or whatever to get around Geoff Bodine at Riverside blows my mind.
@jacekatalakis83162 жыл бұрын
Riverside one was an actual pass in the grass and given how Riverside was, is arguably more difficult to do
@Demise90Racing2 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong. I actually made a quick video about that on my TikTok. Dale literally passed two cars through the grass. It even happened the same year in 1987. That race is definitely a future video on this channel.
@glennmoyer10332 жыл бұрын
One difference is that Dale didn't win that Riverside race. And it was more like a pass in the dirt.

The plan was for the Winston to rotate around tracks at that time, it was losing its appeal and that is what eventually ened up with the 1992 night race as a way to revive the ortunes of a dying race. I still argue they should rotate it around various tracks, thugh
