Something that slipped into this story that made the whole Chandler Parsons saga make sense to me is when he mentions his dad being his financial advisor and chewing him out for money things. When he was in Houston on his rookie contract, he said in an interview, that he was talking to Daryl Morey and trying to get Morey to pay him more. And Morey was like, "I can't, I gotta pay all these other dudes." Parsons started 207 of 246 games in his first 3 seasons, and in 3 years in Houston, he put up basically 15, 6 boards, 3 dimes, and a steal per game. Parsons was a late-round fantasy monster for me his rookie year. Then he went into the "I will never be underpaid for the rest of my life" phase of his NBA career. After hearing Parsons tell this story, I feel like he probably was spurred on by his dad filling his head with numbers on his value based on his stats, and probably because Morey gave him a lowball offer and was treating being an NBA GM like he was at a poker table folding bad hands. (side note: No team led by Daryl Morey has even made it to the Finals, yet this man has won Executive of the Year twice.) Guys are gonna learn lessons when they're in the NBA, but sometimes, they aren't the lessons you wanted to teach 'em.

I have a story of Kobe. It was Dec 2008 and I was stationed at Fort Meade, MD. A buddy of mine was a huge 76ers fan and I was a huge Lakers/Kobe fan and he got tickets to go to the 76ers vs Lakers game. We were down near the court, I think 4-5 rows away, and behind the Lakers bench. He heard us having fun but not making fun of anyone and me saying Kobe was the best in the league. I think it was midway through the game Kobe asked us how we were enjoying the show. He told Kobe he knew Kobe was great but didn't realize how great until that night watching him up close instead of on the big screen. After the game he invited us to go have dinner with them, at his expense. While there, he ordered two drinks for himself and I ordered two for myself and I offered to pay for the extra one (he paid for everything that night). I asked him why he ordered two and had an empty seat next to him and his reply was for his other persona(lity) and asked me why I ordered two and let one sit. I informed him it's for my fallen friends. Then Kobe said something to the effect of, it's a shame that we have people dying and getting so little in return while people playing dress-up and/or a game make millions. I told him we are fine with it because anyone can die for their country but so few can provide quality entertainment to help us have moments of respite. We discussed so many other things and shared ideas from different perspectives that it was such a fun and wonderful night. He was a very intelligent man. The biggest take-a-way I got from him was how to have the mindset of a champion. That day forward my friend was just as much of a Kobe fan as I was.
