Wow! You took me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions with this video. First off, I may be as excited as you are to see the Versace footage you shot! I also laughed so hard at the misunderstanding of the purse spray. Priceless!!! Then, not your fault, but anger. Seriously??? Those overpriced bottles are not even true eau de parfum??? Sicilian blood boiling. The comment about Olivier's vision for new CHANEL fragrances reminded me of an interview he did to introduce L'eau. He said it took him a whole two weeks to get it right. Gee, that's an eternity in his mind apparently. We need to have a sit down with this guy Dacob. Now onto the topic of Gardenia. I adore the edt, I get great sillage and it lasts on my skin until the next day. This new one sounds like one of my high school perfumes. Island Gardenia from Jovan. Yes, cheaper than cheap. I love CHANEL, but I don't like where this all is headed. I can only imagine what could happen to the fashion side of the brand if they choose an unworthy successor to Uncle Karl. I will relish my vintage and pre-Olivier fragrances until something worthy of my money appears. Yes, your dream was quite on the mark! Xoxo!!!!!!

Thanks Debbie dear :) Wow! Did Olivier really say it took him only two weeks to get L'EAU just right?! LOL! I can't stop laughing! I think they are all praying that Lagerfeld never leaves... but it is bound to happen! Unfortunately or fortunately we cannot live forever. Its a tricky game one plays when the future of such a huge brand is at stake! I am very curious to see how it all plays out! Back to GARDENIA EDP: I am not hating it at all! Its OK. Its just not as good as we expect a CHANEL EDP Les Exclusifs to be. Its dry-down is quite soapy which cheapens the experience a bit. Jacque's EDT was cooler and colder, edgier in the dry down while the EDP soapens up and warms up quite a bit. Smells super clean so I sprayed it quite a bit onto my clothes today and that does the trick. The smell on the clothes remains more stable and cool and does not go soapy and warm while on my skin it turns soapy so the over all mix of my clothes and skin combined play well since I get whiffs of both cooler Gardenia and soapy warm Gardenia but still... expected more from CHANEL for sure. xoxo

I am glad with experimentation you were able to find a way to make the edp work for you. I usually always test on clothes as well, usually on my collar the first time. Yes, the interview is on KZbin. I think it's called Olivier Polge Chanel no 5 interview. Yes, it will be interesting to see where the future of the house goes. For now, fast fashion has apparently become fast fragrance .

Finally I watched this video! I was kind of shocked to see you buying a edp version, but now I know the reason of it. Well I'm one of those persons who were introduced to les exclusifs by you, and after the reformulation. I tryed some same of edt versions (gardenia, bel respiro and N18) and I thought they were everything I was looking for in the world of perfumerie. I was able to get a Bel respiro eau de toilette, and my best moments right now are accompanied by this absolutely gorgeus fragrance. So I decided to smell a edp version of bel respiro and I think just like you: It isn't bad. There are not so speacial as they were before. I bought a coromandel bottle, and now I need a Gardenia to call it by mine. This video was perfect, thank you so much for done that. xoxo

I got so mad today,Dacob. I went to the Chanel store and met a really unpleasant SA. Not only did she brush me off when I politely asked why the EDT were discontinued but also firmly said "The EDT will never, ever be back again". In addition I heard " The customers have to get used to the new formulation". In the end, I was gifted an ICE CREAM and no samples!! Was it supposed to cool my nerves? :D :D :D P. S. I was sooo polite, though.

This video is epic! Thank you! Oh dear! I shan't be buying Gardenia! I nearly weep when I think about the loss of the EDTs. But what a shock to hear that they are not EDPs! Isn't that false advertising?!!! My misfortune was that when the EDTs were available, the ones I tried were the ones which were not right for me. I did not try the ones that would have appealed. C'est la vie. I could get Bois des Iles in pure parfum, but that format makes me nervous! It is VERY strong! LOL! I loved the story about your friend and the purse spray! I did laugh, but in comradeship only! That sort of thing happens to me all the time! Thank you for the video and have a great day! And I loved your dream. It is more than a dream. Sadly my experience with Les Exclusifs EDT's is nowhere near the familiarity I have with the EDP's. While I certainly see Chanel's true (and greedy) motives for creating a more concentrated collection, I can't help but love (for the most part) the current Les Exclusifs as they are. I take it all with a grain of salt--I love them all in their own respects for different reasons, but I am also not ignorant to the sad reality that the more time that passes the less and less like their original forms they become. Sadly, this is even more true recently when Chanel suddenly changed concentrations, and ultimately formulations. But this is why I am so willing to be content with the fragrances as they are--the reason I let myself fall so deeply in love with No.22 EDP and Bois des Iles EDP and others in the collection is because I want to protect myself from the insatiable longing of loving a fragrance that I cannot repurchase, which would likely be the case had I ever familiarized myself more with the EDT's. But there's no telling when Chanel might pull a fast one on us again so all my reasoning could possibly be pointless. That said, I think some fragrances in the collection lend themselves better to EDP concentrations, like Coromandel, my personal favorite (in fact, I don't care much for the EDT, but the EDP is mesmerizing), and Beige and Jersey. However, of course the true concentration of these "EDP"s is now up for debate... I always thought it was peculiar how Chanel's EDP's never lasted long on my skin. Next thing you know we'll have Les Exclusifs Eaux de Parfum Intense for twice the current EDP costs. Que sera sera.

Vanni Godfrey I fully agree with you on Coromandel- I own both and much prefer the EDP over the EDT! With it's stronger incense note, fuller body and overall darker profile, It's truly exceptional!

Hi Vanni! I totally get your point but to me this particular case with the Les Exclusifs is a matter of not just accepting the formulations that are now available. There was no need to discontinue the EDTs in the first place. The only reason they discontinued them was to not give the customers a chance to choose and purchase a cheaper concentration. Thats the only reason: money. Not cool at all in my book. I am with you on not reminiscing too much about the past that has long gone but as long as there are options to hunt down from time to time an EDT on the second hand market, then I go for it. Thats just me. To each her or his own of course. GARDENIA is a historic CHANEL fragrance from the twenties and none of the reformulations that came from the eighties onwards and maybe even earlier were the same so in a way the four historic les exclusifs created by Ernest Beaux have seen the most reformulations throughout the eras and that is also one of the reasons I bought GARDENIA in its EDP concentration. Its seen so many reincarnations that I find it worth a good thorough testing since there never was before an EDP concentration of it on the market before now. Having said that, as for the other EDTs Jacques Polge launched for CHANEL in the mid/late 00's, I say, keep them intact as long as possible because those were the first editions and those were to me the closest I ever got to a first edition and true vision of a CHANEL perfume ever! Anyway... I still LOVE CHANEL and always will find a way to keep loving it despite how much the managers and greedy top people in the company damage it... I find my ways to love it and I have Coco to remember! Without her there would be nothing for all these greedy people to pluck from! They should pay her more respect at least... xoxo

Thank you so much Abohin :) The camelia actually has a very thin blue border around it as well :) CHANEL made several small paper flower cutouts last winter season. They chose bright saturated colors for the fun pop effect of them. I don't know if the sales lady place dthe green camelia on my bag because I bought a somewhat "green" smelling fragrance or if it was just coincidence but I know that they also have other colors available :) I really like the green though :) xoxo

I was hoping that this would smell like the flower called gardenia (cape jasmine). But according to their website it was, and I quote, inspired by the "odorless white camelia". Camelia? Camelia is indeed odorless. Yet they describe the scent as jasmine-like. I swear, all these companies have no idea what flowers they are using or even referring to.

Gardenia EDP is very different from the EDT. The EDP is heavy on tuberose, hence smelling more mature and more 'night time'.

Interesting take Joe. I am wearing a lot of it today and am mixing it in terms of wearing it on my skin as well as on my clothes. On my skin it turns warmer while on the clothes it remains cooler (closer to Jacque's EDT formulation) so the mix of whiffs of both combined is lovely for sure but still... expected more from CHANEL especially from a Les Exclusifs fragrance as iconic as GARDENIA... but still like it... xoxo P.S. I am having difficulties smelling out the tuberose in this one... hmm... I need to experiment more with it. xoxo

But you know this problem is very wide ie fragrances are weaker than they should be for the price. I love Chanel but recently i buy from Ormonde Jayne with whom the 40 per cent option is worthwhile for a really favourite perfume. I have been trying Etat libre but though I like some of theirs a lot many of the woody scents I like are quite weak.

In truth, I blame Chanel, Inc. more than M O. Polge for the butchering of the perfumes; he is working off a brief provided by them. I have to believe his father was not told to put all his attention to the head, and to work with what pleases a specific demographic, or to be safe and inoffensive. (I do not disagree that his father might have done a better job of creating magic out of an absurd brief! ) They should be deeply ashamed to be asking for and selling such mediocre drek, at any rate. Misia is the only EdP that is remotely close to the EdT. Gabrielle was horrifyingly blah. SUCH a waste of her name. You have such elegance of manner and it is a pleasure to watch your videos. I truly treasure your opinions and insights. Thank you for continuing to produce wonderful content.

The honesty, the passion and knowledge you have in this video is refreshing! I agree with the first notes and the dry down points you made. I also agree with the concentrated EDT point you made regarding the EDP. I too noticed the change in concentration between the two. Gardenia is my favorite and long to one day have the Parfum Grand Extrait. But that is rather expensive and I would want it to be right! thanks for this video update!

Thank you :) GARDENIA EDT has been discontinued but the EDP is really good. As of now, after going through two full 200ml bottles I can say its better than the EDT! The PARFUM is also amazing and still in production so you are good to go and you got a good selection to choose from :)

So I was just at Chanel yesterday talking about gardenia and she told me they changed it and it’s better. So I am assuming that is what your are discussing. I didn’t buy it cause I wanted reviews. I want to grab the smaller size so that I could bring it in a bag while traveling. So is the smaller bottle the original and the bigger sizes the new formula or does the new formula come in both sizes. I was to embarrassed to ask. So the original is an eau toilette? Hi Dacob! I own a sample set of LE EdT I bought on ebay. My embarrassing question is: what is the porcelain gardenia that came in the box with for?

Hi madelaine, the porcelain gardenia should have one side that is rough, porous. That side is the side where one should spray their favorite perfume and then place the porcelain camelia/gardenia into the wardrobe so that it smells of the perfume for a long time. The porcelain flower is a wardrobe "rock", made to spread the clean smell of perfume onto the clothes :) xoxo

Dacob, I remember you being displeased with the EDP at the time of their release, but of course ours noses change over time, so I’m curious...of all the 17 Les Exclusifs is Gardenia the only one you consider to have gone through an improvement with the transition into Eau De Parfum ?

To be very clear: I am still very displeased with CHANEL discontinuing their Les Exclusifs EDT range. My nose does not go through drastic quality worsening in just a little over two years. LOL. Most of the Les Exclusifs EDPs are a joke when compared the the EDTs. Having said that, do not make the mistake to think they are all terrible. First off: two of the Les Exclusifs were never formulated in EDT concentration so those two already cannot fit the comparison bar: BOY (which came out right before the EDT cancellations) and 1957 (which came out after the EDT range cancellation). Then there are the traditional Les Exclusifs: the four that were already in rotation since the 20's: GARDENIA, CUIR DE RUSSIE, N°22 and BOIS DES ILES. These four actually probably already had their corresponding EDP formulation recipes ready in the drawer and did not need to wait for Olivier to create them. Of the original four, GARDENIA really stands out as a masterpiece in EDP form. The other three miss the mark but only because the ingredients used today water down the original intensity of their original formulation counterparts from the 20's. As for the other Les Exclsuifs of today, the only one I would save and the only one I ADORE is LA PAUSA. In fact, I would go so far as to say it is a new perfume since they even changed the name from "28 LA PAUSA" to "LA PAUSA". In fact, the two smell worlds apart. LA PAUSA to me should be placed in the list with the two EDPs mentioned above: "BOY" and "1957" as a Les Exclusifs which was released post EDT cancellation. So there you have it. As you can read here, the situation has nothing to do with my nose changing. The situation has not changed and it is still quite complicated. Much more complicated than one would initially think. But after all is said and done, to answer your question: of the EDP Les Exclusifs which had a counterpart in the EDT era, I would save "GARDENIA" and "LA PAUSA". The rest is a no go for me. This does not mean that CHANEL will never better their formulas. They might use better ingredients one day and their Les Exclusifs EDPs might get better. There is hope with each new batch they produce...

Super Dacob I’m coming from the opposite side of the tracks, having discovered the EDP line before going on a hunt down adventure of the discontinued and revered Eau De Toilettes. Yes there is hope to see future reformulations and maybe 31 Rue Cambon, No.18, Misia, Jersey, Bel Respiro can be restored to their former glory as they to me have been utterly butchered. I absolutely love the other EDP in the lineup as they work better with my skin chemistry. Olivier has already done a masterful job with Coromandel Parfum so maybe he’s finally learning the way. We might see an official Sycomore Pure Parfum done soon but in the meantime I will hold on the unreleased 15ml flacon that I have, it’s a crossbreed between the post IFRA Sycomore and the current EDP in my opinion. PS: Chanel should be fined for murdering 28 La Pausa, La Pausa does not have that beautiful Orris Root it once had, yes a completely different perfume that we will likely never see again in the future. A crime.

LA PAUSA is amazing in my opinion and to my nose. I am on my third bottle already. LOL. 28 LA PAUSA is wonderful but alas buried in CHANEL history. As for SYCOMORE PARFUM... hmm... that is a very interesting tidbit of information you leaked in your comment... I am intrigued... quite intrigued in fact... how did you get a hold of that bottle?

My flacon still smells incredibly intense, the Vetiver is not quite as smoky as the early 2008 EDT batch, but regardless it smells different, opulent and grandiose. Speaking of first batches of Sycomore there is an extremely rare 8oz (236 ml) bottle that was only sold in Europe in the very early stages of its release in 2008 which my friend has in her collection that i am looking forward to get. She is extremely knowledgeable and she also follows your channel by the way :) take care

The best gardenia was in the 70s, originally formulated by, Touvache, in the 30s. With the reformulstions - too many to list - all I know it the scent, or one of its incarnations reached my nose in the 70s and it was GLORIOUS, rich but soft; heady for sure, creamy and dreamy. I found a version online by the name of one of its subsequent owners, with a disclaimer that some of the some of the ingredients have been discontinued and replaced with 'synthetic' replacements...I bought a bottle anyway ... the vintage box appealed to me and the price was right. BIG disappointment. Flat, strong, chemical smell, then it's oily, sweet and flat again in the dry down. I smell only tuberose and no, virtually no, trace of that original and subsequent 70s version, or its depth. I see a decant company who claims all the sell are original, decanted from original bottles, and I may order a couple MLS from them. Do you KNOW Jungle Gardenia? If so, can you compare Chanel's Gardenia to it? With regard to that creamy, deep, MESMERIZING, gardenia fragrance... considered by many, the sexiest, most exotic fragrance in the world.

Chanel is GREEDY GREEDY GREEDY and I want no part of them anymore. The only one I will admit to buying coz I love it more than the edt is Coromandel. But I’m damn pissed off at Greedy Chanel so I’m not buying anything Chanel ever again. Except for Coromandel, of course. I wish I wasn’t so crazy about Coromandel but I am, so they’ll be getting a lil bit more of my money. I don’t see the allure of #5, I don’t like it, smells like old lady. Literally every old lady in NYC, including both my NANAS, wear Chanel #5, so it just reminds me of old ladies. Regardless, I also just hate the scent of #5. Hubby thinks it smells like bug spray, but he’s an idiot, he thinks they all smell like bug spray.

Not really. The EDP is a lighter EDP... but in the dry down, which stays very close to the skin, there is intensity there... an intensity which is missing in the EDT concentration. Its a slightly different take on GARDENIA but the DNA is still there...

Yes, there are differences in all of them. The least amount of change is to be noted in the pure parfum of N°5. N°19 does not use any labdanum from Lebanon any longer which is a pity since it used to be a wonderful labdanum... and many other changes throughout the entire range... but all in all I still love them... despite the changes which in some cases have cheapened the perfumes quality considerably.

Super Dacob No5 EDP was my mother's only fragrance back in the late 80's early 90's. I smelt it in a Dillards not too long ago and it was almost like a time portal sucked me up and I was back to when I was a little boy. Funny how that works.
