What do you guys think of the stock diff fluid in my ZR1? If you're interested in changing it yourself you can buy the OEM fluid here: amzn.to/32Z8YSx and the pump to get it into your differential here: amzn.to/37nKTsf 👍👍 The "how-to" portion starts at 3:11.

Good point. Unfortunately, that's what the rear differential fluid often looks like after several thousand miles. Mine has a little over 15,000 and I need to change it. GM generally claims ~ 30,000 miles, although 15 - 20K is considered better by others. That is due to the fact the ring and pinion gears in the differential see a lot of wear which results in microscopic metal particles, which is what you saw. Like I say, the more you know, the more paranoid, err I mean prepared, you should be. In this case that means changing the diff oil about every 15,000 miles or even more often depending on just how 'prepared' you are. ;)

Just finished changing my fluid, your video inspired me to go after this job. My drain & fill plugs had the exact little blue marks on them. I gotta say my fluid actually looked pretty good, but there was snot on the drain plug. At first the upper plug on my Z06 looked impossible to get at. It's amazing how after a short while you really adapt to getting after it. I had my car on jack stands, so it's a bit different from a lift. After draining and filling which was exactly 3 bottles of fluid before it began to lightly stream out of the top plug opening. I used a red Hopkins's siphon pump I got at at Lowe's Home Improvement for $14. That pump works fantastic. Thanks again for putting up this video.

NICE VIDEO! One note: You should drive the car a little (figure 8's) and then recheck the level. I've done many of these on C7's and 1LE's and sometimes it will take a few pumps after the run in. Also, that fluid is completely normal looking. I always do them at 1,500 miles and it always looks like that on the first change. It's a combination of metal as the gears run in and the clutch packs breaking in. Looks good!

Great info. Yeah it looks like that black stuff is sealant. However... all that metallic crap in the fluid is pretty nasty. Maybe it’d be a good idea to get an extra three quarts, fill it up, spin the diff manually, then drain again. Then refill. Also... you can get a drill powered pump at a boating supply shop. It has one end that would go down the dipstick hole (to an oil pan), and another that discharges whatever you’re pumping, which would go in the diff.

@@HorsePowerObsessed from building many quads and dirt bikes over the years, I've seen the same "goo" with the oil. Most likely it's the clutches breaking in inside the diff. They should recommend a change of fluid after a certain amount of miles.

The greyish black pasty stuff is likely clutch pack material. The ELSD in the C7 still has actual friction discs (four frictions per side and alternating steels). Like any friction assembly (brakes, clutch, diff etc.), they slip, wear, and shed some material in doing so.

Had all the fluids swapped in my '13 C6Z at around 50Kmi. Clutch, coolant, PS, brakes, transmission (switched to Amsoil Signature Synth-huge difference in shift quality) and differential. It's really cheap insurance to get all that gear/clutch wear material out. Car makers want you to believe in 'Permanent Life No Change' fluids. But, it's a crock. I even changed the engine oil/filter after the first 1000 miles after it's break-in period. Just to get any worn material out from the break-in.

The dealership is telling me the bearings are bad at 18,000 miles. That torque tube was installed at 3,400 miles. The car was making a scraping sound ( like the front air deflector on a C5) when I slowed down to 12 MPH to make a turn. Also when shifting from P to R. Now at 18,000 miles when I step on the gas it makes a metal scraping sound. Additionally, the shift point (A8) for every Mode (Weather, Economy, Touring, Sport & Track) is the same. At 35 MPH I’m in 6th gear.
@Team512
@Team512 4 жыл бұрын
Curtis Fish wow! So 3400 miles out of the first set of torque tube bearings and less than 15,000 miles on the second set? Understood they replaced the entire torque tube in the process. Those bearings should have a much longer life than that. When I changed out my C5 TT bearings they had 77,000 miles on them and they weren’t making noise yet. An out of balance prop shaft can shorten the life on those bearings. Extremely hard driving can too. But this is an uncharetistically short life span for a stock car.

@HorsePowerObsessed
@HorsePowerObsessed 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't notice any issues, I just knew from previous GM performance cars that the factory fill is nasty and wanted to change it. Basically, it can't hurt and it SEEMS like it may cause issues if you leave it in there for the recommended amount of time. It won't help at all with shifting your gears, if you want to help with that you'd want to change out the transmission fluid.
@texasrubicon392
@texasrubicon392 4 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t change the shifting. That would be transmission fluid. This will help with the efficiency and longevity of the differential gears. When it’s gummy like that, it generates heat, since there’s extra resistance. You also “spend” horsepower and fuel mileage generating heat through inefficient fluid. This is a contributor to parasitic drivetrain loss (inefficiency).

Definitely isn’t. The ZR1 is the widest and the grand sport and Z06 are the same width.

NICE VID..I HAVE 10-K ON MY 18 GR. SPORT...HOW MANY MILES IS RECOMMENDED/ + what about the residual oil in the cooler system?
@HorsePowerObsessed
@HorsePowerObsessed 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. GM doesn't say that this is required until around 40,000 mi. In my experience I think you should do it a lot earlier than that just because of how it looked after 4,000 mi. There is a little bit of residual oil in the actual radiator and the only real way to get it out would be to flush it again. I do plan on doing that this upcoming spring along with the manual transmission fluid.
