AKA the Surface Planer for my Non-North-American viewers.
I had three nasty nicks in my Jointer blades.
Actually, I’d had one for a long time, but it was near the edge so I
made do by moving the fence over for a few years. But then I added two more nicks in a short time, and you could no longer move the fence to avoid them.
Yes I should probably sharpen the old blades. But a new set of sharp blades are only about $17 on Amazon.ca ($15 on Amazon.com) so I took the lazy way out and just ordered some new ones.
Here I’m taking you along for the ride as I change my blades.
Please, don’t treat this like a “Howto” video. Instead, just look at this as a vlog type of video where you follow along with my fun and adventure (sarcasm!). Here are a couple of links to what I think are much better “how to” procedures.

Thanks for the video. I just purchased a 6" jointer and need to change out the blades. Done it several times on both the jointer and planer but usually nick my hands. Good job. Yes they are a bear to change out and get set correctly.

Good job on deciding to put that guard back on for testing. So many people get hurt using power tools because they remove safety equipment.

You did an EXCELLENT video on this!! Very helpful; was just what I needed to know. Also, like your no-nonsense, get to the point, matter of fact teaching style!

I have a slightly older version of the same jointer. Bought a Shelix for it and love it. Would have never believed how much quieter they are.

Replacing jointer knives is no fun as you showed. And yes, a helical head cutter is awesome! Thanks for the video Art!

That's some serious nicks in your jointer blades. I guess you have been planing some reclaimed lumber?

Y'know I don't actually remember when they happened. Might have been that time with the reclaimed lumber.

For me, a good start for my blade change. My jointer is the same as yours, 37-866 as on the name plate. Jives me an idea what is in store. Thanks. Mark

I went through this exactly once. Then I ordered a Byrd head. Took me over a year to actually get around to putting it in but finally did it recently. I felt a little silly putting one in a 6" jointer but to never have to go through that nonsense again is worth it even without the other benefits.

I've debated between the jointer and the planer... on the one hand I think the planer would pay better dividends having the shelix. But on the other... Despite being a DW735, it is still a "portable" and it could break down, rendering the investment somewhat wasted. The jointer is only 6", but it is cast iron and less likely to break down, and as long as I live here with a small basement shop there is no chance of fitting in an 8" or bigger jointer. But it's only a 6", so maybe the planer. and around again we go. Decision paralysis...

Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) They don't make a head for my Makita so that was an easy one for me :) The 6" head is on sale at Grizzly by the way.

I have a really old jointer and it has a 4 knife cutterhead so when the time comes I may just have to buy 2 packs because I don't see them sold as a set of 4. only sets of 2 and 3.

Don't ever tighten them without gloves and blanket on the knives. Believe me, I just got back from the ER yesterday doing the exact same job as you. When tightening I slipped, pushed my finger right down in the new blade, cut open to the bone. Never again without gloves and a blanket.

Art, Go helical. You'll never go back. I spent way too many hours on planer and jointer blades. Never ever seemed to get it perfect. Now it's just loosen screw and rotate. JimE
