a quick video showing how to use the jointer pal, a magnetic knife setter, to quickly and efficiently set your jointer knives. Super easy. Anyone can do it Jointer pal: amzn.to/2xp47uV

Best explanation of this process. No where In the instructions did it explain this process. A good teacher is much better the written word. Big thanks for KZbin and great teachers like you

I can’t recommend this enough. I’ve been dreading changing my knives but it got to the point I needed a whole tune up. Luckily I had bought the jig a few months ago. I propped my phone up on the fence and followed along and was able to change the blades and get everything back to square in about an hour. Thanks for the great video!

Just like you, I was very intimidated about setting my knives. But I too purchased a Jointer Pal and after following the instructions the task became very easy and stressless. In fact, I just this minute removed my knives, sharpened them and replaced in about 1/2 hour. It really is worth buying. thanks for showing this.

Kevin, purchased my yesterday and will be conducting a full maintenance on my planner. This will make the changing of the blades easier. Thanks for sharing.

Couple years ago I bought a used Jet 6” jointer and the guy gave me the setup tool with it. I’m just now needing to replace the knives and following the book instructions removed the dull knives and then the instructions weren’t so clear, so I came to KZbin where I found this video. Hopefully I got the new blades set correctly since I had already removed the old ones before going to the setup tool. I guess we’ll see… Anyway, great job with this tutorial. It helped me understand the setup tool a lot and will no doubt make changes in the future much smoother. 👍🏼

Thanks! After 7 years of using the same joiner blades in my home shop it's now time to change them out. This is a pretty foolproof method compared to other methods people have described.

Great video. Just wish I had watched it BEFORE I pulled out my blades.

That really made it simple! Thanks for this, I was frustrated trying to figure out how. Thanks Pete 😀👊

I appreciate people feeling eager to provide how too videos. Unfortunately , sometimes like in this video there was a very important step that was missed. Please remember to adjust the gib screws that raise and lower the height of your knives. I’m not talking about the bolts that tighten in place as seen in this video. Obviously when you replace your knives , assuming that you resharpened them, the blade height will be different from a new set, since metal was grinder down. You need to adjust the gib screws that will meet the bottom of your knives since there will be a gap because the sharpened knives are smaller. Or they will be loose and bouncing up and down in the knife bar. My powermatic has 2 of them for each knife. It looks like there are 2 of them in this video on each knife. It’s important that they be raised to meet the bottom of the replacement knifes.

Not all jointers have these jack screws, my Delta has a couple of springs under the blade to put upward force on the blade and doesn't have any jack screws. I think the jointer in this video is like mine, but I may be wrong.
@ozgultekin61004 ай бұрын
@@cujo7240 yep, mine doesn't have those either.

Great video. Do you ever have trouble with the knives lifting the jointer pal off the table? My jointer has springs which are pretty powerful and they push up against the jointer pal
@DettorreCustoms6 ай бұрын
I can’t answer that accurately. Mine didn’t have any springs so the magnet held them in check easily for me to tighten them in place
@bpatters696 ай бұрын
@@DettorreCustoms Thanks... looks like your Jointer has jack screws which you can raise and lower vs springs.

A knife setting jig will get you very close to the finish line, but it won't get you over it. To pass the finish line, you'll have to do the travel test on each of the knives on each end. Otherwise the height of the knives will *not* be equal.
@DettorreCustoms Жыл бұрын
True but this goes a long way to helping people who are otherwise intimidated by the process
@adgot9000 Жыл бұрын
@@DettorreCustoms Absolutely, and to be clear, I wouldn't want to get to the travel test stage *before* using a jointer pal-style jig. I think insanity lies down that path.

I have a 6" Delta Jointer and the same mag-tool you used and everything seems nicely aligned, but as I start to tighten the jack screws this causes the blade position to move out of alignment ever so slightly. Very frustrating to say the least. Any suggestions?

Before you attempt to remove anything! Ya gotta unplug the unit...

Since the distance between the two reference lines on the jig is constant, why draw a second line on the fence or on the outfeed table? Thx.
@DettorreCustoms6 жыл бұрын
David Martin the line in the middle part of the fence is crucial because that line will represent the point where the tip of the knives meet the height of the outfeed table. The line furthest back is just a simple double check. If both those lines meet up your confident in setting each one consistent. Thanks alot!

Here's a question. I got the jointer without knives in it. How can I set that first line to align them? Thank you for any advice.
@Jordan-wp8xi3 жыл бұрын
Set all three knives to the highest point initially.
@geneodato62403 жыл бұрын
@@Jordan-wp8xi how do you do that? a short video would be tremendously helpful
@jesus_is_lord83032 жыл бұрын
@ gene Odato 1st things first, make sure your infeed is parallel with the head ( the part that holds the knives) then make sure it’s co- planer ( outfeed parallel with the infeed. Once that is done lower the infeed and instal knives There’s a great video on it called supertune dovetail jointer

Fuck man, what should I do if I removed the knives before I did anything else? I have no idea where the high spot is
@rickmiles94004 жыл бұрын
I have had the problem that tightening the screws will shift the knife up. How do you prevent this from happening?
@danimal6777 Жыл бұрын
So what if your knives are already removed?
@ozgultekin61005 ай бұрын
why do you need to scribe the second line? that's what I don't get with this.
@DettorreCustoms5 ай бұрын
That’s a good question. Probably as a safe guard to make sure you line up both. Sometimes in cast iron you could think you see a line but maybe it’s another mark.

In your video I did not see the purpose of raising the infeed table. I did not see you use the infeed table for any reference at all. What you want is to make sure that the apex of the knifes are exactly the same height as the outfeed table. The Jig is only referencing the outfeed table and has nothing to do with the infeed table. Please advise if I’m missing something
@DettorreCustoms2 жыл бұрын
Most people don’t have that jig. If you used a straight edge you want everything to be even at height zero. That’s why you’d raise in the indeed. It’s an old video. My apologies for not explaining better
@Marrio492 жыл бұрын
@@DettorreCustoms Thank you for your reply. In my 50 years plus of Woodworking using jointers I’ve never used the infeed table for replacing or adjusting the knives. It all has to do with the outfeed table. Sometimes Depending on the quality of the knives I set the knives slightly higher by couple of thousands because that extreme sharp edge of the knives will be worn off pretty quickly and then you’ll be down to the true Apex of the knives relative to the outfeed table surface. Best
@DettorreCustoms2 жыл бұрын
@@Marrio49 raising the indeed table ( for me prior to this jig) was just a way to keep my straight edge level and balanced while I set them. You are correct it’s not necessary. Maybe it was just a quirk on my end. All the best my man
