@@jorgegodinez522 i recommend you to look at doc snipes video on negative thoughts. One of the things she said which is being mentioned here is “Disqualifying the positive”. That cognitive distortion seems very similar to what youre presenting, so try asking yourself questions such as “whats so scary about focusing on the positive” then embracing it, and “what would I do if my bestfriend was living this experience”. All in all brother, things go wrong down the line and all we can do is get stronger. We cant control what we dont have a grasp on, and trying to control the future is a losing game. Lifes just a moment so live it up and be free. Write down your cognitive distortions and challenge them

Thanks for this video very informative. Can you give examples of evidence against the core belief that "I'm defective"? I am currently struggling with it.
@SelfHelpToons2 жыл бұрын
"Defective" is such a broad/general idea, you probably need to define what exactly you mean by defective and list specific areas in which you feel defective, and then try to find evidence against these individually.

@@SelfHelpToons I think it's just the belief that something is wrong with me.
@SelfHelpToons2 жыл бұрын
I would ask myself, what do I mean by something is wrong with me? Is it anything specific? If so, I would ask myself what is the evidence for and against this and try to start believing it at least a little less strongly. I would try asking myself questions like the ones on the worksheet at bit.ly/3QkhZzR. If it's just a general sense that something is wrong with me, then that's so vague it's hard to argue against, and I would try to clarify what I meant when I think, something is wrong with me. Sorry but I can't really come up with examples of evidence against your beliefs, because I don't know anything about you and your situation, and that's not really something I can figure out without actually meeting with you

Very good explanation on how to change beliefs. I do have the question still, how do we know which beliefs are helpful and which are not? and a second question: in the examples given for how we gather new information, we were always rewarded with the kind of info that fits the desired new belief. but what if the experience is actually the exact thing that fits the initial core belief? what if the party really is full of dismissive people?
@SelfHelpToons Жыл бұрын
To determine if your core beliefs are helpful to you, evaluate the impact of your core beliefs. Consider how your core beliefs affect your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Are they helping you achieve your goals and lead a fulfilling life, or are they hindering you in some way? If your core beliefs are causing you distress, interfering with your relationships, or preventing you from achieving your goals, they may not be helpful. And you can reflect on your values. Do your core beliefs align with your values and what's important to you in life. If your core beliefs conflict with your values or prevent you from living in accordance with them, they may not be helpful. If the results of an experiment are discouraging you could reframe the experiment and rather than viewing the negative outcome as a failure or reinforcement of negative beliefs, reframe it as a learning opportunity. What did you learn from the experiment? How can you use this information to make positive changes in your behavior or beliefs? Or you could try a different experiment with a different approach. Experimentation is an important part of CBT, and not all experiments will produce positive results. The goal is to keep trying and learning from each experience.
@marihi8621 Жыл бұрын
@@SelfHelpToons Thank you so much for this in depth response. I was positively surprised when I read it because in all the years I have spent on youtube, I had not yet seen this level of engagement from a channel owner. Your explanation really does clarify things. It’s not that I have never heard of any of those concepts, but I often don’t see the wood for the trees. You write about the concepts in such a concise and ordered way that it makes sense in my head. As someone who struggles with anxious thoughts and worries, I can confirm that reframing something as a learning opportunity helps tremendously. The struggle feels less like a “waste of time” and more like just one of the challenges life throws onto the table. I personally have always had a difficult time with concepts like values and beliefs. I understand on a surface level what is meant but it is still difficult to distinguish what comes from outside and what is really me (when looking at values) or what is rather plausible and what is distorted (when looking at beliefs). I know you have videos on those topics and I might find answers to some of my questions when working through those.

@SelfHelpToons Жыл бұрын
Yes I believe you're overthinking it. The ratings are completely subjective so there's no correct rating and no benefit to trying to figure out whether it's exactly 70 or 75 or 80. Whatever feels right is fine. You could rate on a scale from 1 to 10 if that's easier, or even on a five-point scale with something like not at all, a little bit, moderately, a lot, completely.

“Statement” and “belief” are not synonyms. Just saying words doesn't make them believable; no matter how many times you repeat them. Adults need _evidence_ to believe something; which this video acknowledges in relation to maintaining toxic core beliefs, but, completely ignores when it comes to forming new core beliefs. I don’t know how any mental health professional can confidently say just reiterating the same assertion over and over will turn that assertion into a belief.
