The democrats and republicans have totally switched places. How does someone with a history degree not know that?
@Jonmad179 жыл бұрын
+AFR0PR1NC3 Because someone with a history degree understands how simplistic that notion is. Before the Southern Switch everyone talks about, the Republican party was the party of economic liberty and business policy. The modern Republican party isn't quite that anymore, but it's far closer to that than the modern Democratic party is. People like Jon Huntsman are closer to Theodore Roosevelt than Barack Obama is.

@azaziel92879 жыл бұрын
I definitely respect Colin's opinion, he's clearly a well informed Republican and while I disagree with the majority of his views, he's not belligerent about them and understands what he's saying and why he believes it. However, as regards to his comments at the end of the video, about the "myth that the parties switched," that's very true. The parties did switch. You can see that clear as day in the graphs that show who voted for who. Pre-Rowe vs. Wade and the other like minded Supreme Court decisions the South pretty much unanimously voted Democrat. Then, I wanna say sometime around the 80's, it flipped. The South from then on votes Republican. That alone should be enough to show that the parties flopped. But you can also see it in their policies and agendas.
@MagtheBlack8 жыл бұрын
+Austin Lovell The Parties did not switch. The constituents switched. The Republican party is still very similar in policy to the Republican party from the 19th century, especially in terms of fiscal policy, as is the Democratic party. The Republican party was always fighting for free markets, and they still do so, and you insisting that their policies changed significantly makes me question your knowledge on the subject. The key change in policy from then to know is the rise of social conservatism. Its this kind-of half switch that Colin refers to. The parties did not change significantly, but there were certain critical moments in American history that changed priorities for certain groups of people and thus changed party alignment (the Great Depression, The Civil Rights Act for the South).

I have good friends who are republicans and while we might get into heated conversations they are still great friends. Colin's right. A great breakdown of the problems facing the party. I do lean more toward the Democrats but I used to identify as a Republican during my teenage years. My eventual switch came in part because of gradual changes in my opinions, but most largely because I couldn't stand the emergent social conservatism espoused by Republican candidates and representatives. I may vote for a Republican in the future, but not until that facet of the party declines. Overall, a great video Colin and Greg!

I dislike A LOT of what Colin says-mostly his delivery and attitude while actually speaking-and I'm the first to put him through the wringer for how he handled the ME3 fiasco. However, there's no question that he's intelligent and is passionate about everything he discusses. I'd rather have someone that can articulate and argue their stance, regardless of how much I fervently disagree with it, than a buffoon that mindlessly rants without direction or reason. It's also funny how on so many points I couldn't possibly disagree with him more, but on others I'm totally on the same page. Like him or hate him he's an interesting and pretty complex guy. Albeit unapologetic and opinionated to a fault lol.

Because the Constitution invariably leads to the development of a two party system, I, a fiscal conservative, have a tough time aligning with a party at this time. Colin is spot on, all these regressive social issues should be non-issues. We shouldn't be restricting actions that don't negatively affect others.

I consider myself to be a libertarian, and I find myself holding my nose to vote for Republicans simply because they're the more closely-aligned of two options on the ballot. Respecting a different point of view is the most rational and educated way to engage in discourse with it. I respect that some people believe that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. That view has been culturally constructed over a long period of time. Even though I respect this position, I disagree. I believe that the time has come to extend our definition of marriage.

I am in the same exact frame of mind as Colin. I am a fiscal Republican, but I believe that the social issues should be cast out of the Republican party, as well as politics in general. Who is Congress or Senate or the President or anyone to prevent someone from doing what they want? But government spending is absurd and a fiscal Republican in office would be very good for the state of the Union

"It's all perception" ...that all of Colin's examples happened over 60 years ago, or in line with Kennedy publicly supporting a civil rights like law, and Lyndon Johnson signing (knowing it would cost them the south completely) that bill into law. And thus finishing the switching of the parties (which had already begun under Woodrow Wilson)
@dangvozden12 жыл бұрын
Colin, as a liberal I'm dying for a stronger Republican party. A strong Republican party will lead to a stronger opposition. However, the problem is that you now have a party that is both socially conservative and not fiscally conservative.

My problem with the fiscal policies of the Republican Party is that they want to cut so much money out of Medicare/Medicaid and cut out funding for food stamps and anything else they can find, but for some reason we can never consider cutting spending in the military. I'm not saying we need to decimate our military, I mean, we're spending nearly 700 Billion dollars on the Military every YEAR. How is that never on the table of things we could save some money on?
