In this video we are stripping the amber finish off of the top of my LP guitar kit from precision guitar kits and changing it up with a fresh dye job and a beautiful finish from Maximum Guitar Works. The previous dye work is being used to help accent the new finish, and we are doing a two layer mohawk dye job followed by a nice hard wax oil.

Wow, what a difference when you took that amber lacquer off and detailed out that top with color. It went from meh to WOWZER in short order. The SOS finishes are surprisingly durable too. I built a cherry handle for the sliding glass door going out to the patio in my house and finished it with SOS six or seven months ago. It’s a high traffic door and it still looks and feels like new. Great work and great video as usual. Thanks for sharing?

I really like the look of this guitar after you removed the amber tent you had on the top before. It looks like the new blue and green dies you put on after you removed the amber brought back a lot more of the figure in the wood and looks less splotchy. Looks really good now and cleaner.

Like this a lot better than the amber, very nice. For the benefit of anyone doing this the first time, if you have your perfect multi-colored burst done, you definitely want to shoot a couple of thin coats of sealer on it before you hit it with oil, otherwise it will change the color blend.

Looks great, even though for a dyed flamed maple like that, I'd prefer a bit more gloss, but as you say, it's your guitar. :) I do have a question about the (#8) oil finish, though. Would Japan Drier work to speed up the drying time on it?

I'm a fan of oil finishes on guitars for the average hobbist. They're so much easier to do at home you don't have a spraybooth, and easier to do all year round too, when the weather prevents you from spraying outside, or in a shed or garage. Those finishes look great and the thicker one looks really interesting. I'd love to try them, but £84 shipping to the UK is a hard no sadly.

I like the new color. Where are you getting your Mohawk blue and green from? Amazon and most of my other sources are only carrying traditional wood colors. The only place i can find them is direct from Mohawk and that is probably the most expensive route. I may also play around with some aniline solid dyes but they call to be mixed in water and I don't know how well that will work with a lacquer finish - don't want to trap water under the lacquer.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard direct from Mohawk is actually cheaper than amazon. Either way I got mine straight from their marketing department. He water based option is fine, you just need to give it plenty of time to fully dry.

@@BradAngove I checked today, the price is cheaper but the shipping is $30 for two bottles. I’ll keep looking. I can make green by mixing blue and yellow but it will require some experimentation. Brad .. I am a believer now. The Amber hid the flame on that beautiful top.. black sand back not needed as that grain absorbed enough green/blue.. that finish is quite easy . But how durable will it be vs multiple coats of nitro??..
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
It depends on what you mean by durable. It won’t ding up like nitro, so more durable in that sense. It also doesn’t protect the wood with a hard layer like nitro, so less durable from that perspective.
@bjstein4242
@bjstein4242 Жыл бұрын
@@BradAngove like hitting the top with your guitar cable leaving a dent.. poly can take that.. nitro.. not so much.. guessing this is protective from moisture but maybe not knowing it about.. looks awesome.. !! how much cure time does that stuff require ?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t cure per se, it just dries over time. I’m not sure how long exactly. I think it probably continues to harden for a while, but it’s dry enough to the touch after a day or so.

Hey Brad…based on this video I bought the SOS kit, laid 4 coats of #8, then 4 coats of #7 and while it looks great, I really was hoping for a glossier finish. Is that still possible after this application? And if so, how? Is this like Tru-oil? How does it compare?
@pops71
@pops71 Жыл бұрын
So it is an oil finish, but that’s about where the similarities end. SOS is made with only natural oils, there is nothing dangerous or bad for you in it. It leaves a beautiful, safe to apply, durable finish that’s easy to apply, dries in a reasonable amount of time feels like silk. Tru-Oil is pretty much opposite to that, except the finish when done right after it finally dries is beautiful. It’s has some nasty petroleum distillates in it. I’ve used a lot of Tru-Oil over the years, I think this is far better, IMHO.

@3cardmonty602
@3cardmonty602 Жыл бұрын
@@pops71 Thanks Michael. I’ve used Tru-Oil on a lot of guitar tops. (I’m 62) One of the issues is that it’ll take a light blue top and turn it green, and it tends to take light wood like a Maple neck, and yellow it, which might be just what someone wants. Otherwise, I never had anyone die from its use.
@pops71
@pops71 Жыл бұрын
@@3cardmonty602 My pleasure, yeah I’m sure there’s not a long list of death and disease attributed to TO…lol. It is nice using SOS and not worrying about gloves or fumes. I know exactly what you mean about discoloration, I’ve been building for 30 something years and in some cases that amber tint is welcome, other times not so much. SOS doesn’t add any color to the wood or finish. In fact, if you have any un absorbed dye that hasn’t dried and is actually muting the finish, the all natural solvent in SOS will clean up that that mess without “digging in” or ruining your hard work. It’s pretty amazing stuff. The fretboard treatment is also amazing, it will make your fretboard feel like silk sheets.
