The idea here is simply that, given the design of the Remington portable ribbon spools (with the metal ring in the centre and a plastic top which slots on to the spindle), to replace the ribbon with a Universal ribbon it is necessary to wind new ribbon on to the spindles by hand. It overcomes the problem of not having replacement metal rings for the centre (most often people throw out the rings with the old ribbon). Alternatively, I suppose, if you've kept the rings, you could wind new ribbon on to the rings and attach those to the spindle, but that would be a longer, slightly more difficult and messier exercise. As for using the lower part of the ribbon, simply apply the ribbon colour selector switch.

Push the right hand platen knob in, toward the left, so that the left end of the central rod moves out from the platen and blocks carriage movement, including the carriage lever.

After doing this you put back the ring on the right spool and catch the ribbon in it? Mine only had one metal ring, might the other one be lost or is it that way?

Hi everyone! Does anybody know if I can unscrew the spool? I bought a Remington Travel-Riter Deluxe, and the left spool doesn't turn. It's really hard, only by hand you can turn it. I believe someone used oil or something that with time harden it. I can't type because it won't move! Any help is appreciated!

I followed your instructions :-) but my ribbon lifts slightly as i type :-( I have a Personal-Riter (remington of course)

Do you mean it lifts off the centre ring? If so, it sounds like you need a spool top piece to be clipped on to the ring. If you mean it lifts at the printing point, it hasn't been threaded on to the ribbon vibrator properly.
