Been having a starter issue lately and I have to change it before the tracker goes out to have the Toyota axles put under it. Changing the starter didn't fix my problem, looks like I have the Suzuki clicky starter issue.

When mine did that, it was the ignition switch. Similar problem that the Sumari has with the "Clicky Starter." The nodes in the key switch get worn down and don't make a good connection. I fixed mine by adding a push button for the starter that connects to the spade on the back of the starter. It only bypasses the starter circuit and you have to put the key in the START position to energize the computer.

I was thinking this may be the problem. I think I remember wiggling the column and making it start once before. Thanks for the info.

That is the problem. Just used a wire off the spade on the starter to the battery and it started right up.

Glad I was able to help. I replaced my starter and put a junkyard ignition switch in only to NOT solve the problem.

@JohnDennis-lq1vd I spoke with a friend and he says he will show me how to add a relay and fix this issue.

Thanks. I try to let people know what to expect if they attempt one of these jobs.

Thanks for the vid, I swapped mine and it seems to have similar issue. What’s the process of adding a relay to my ignition switch?
@trashpandaoffroad35489 күн бұрын
Contact me on Instagram if you need better instruction but it's basically power from battery to relay. Small power line off blade on starter to relay. Ground from relay to ground. Small power wire from relay to blade on starter.

so the 3 cables that goes to the starter are the one that has a boot , the one that just insert it, and the other one where it go? the green/white ?
@trashpandaoffroad354812 күн бұрын
Only 2 wires to thw starter. The positive wire that has a boot. The small ignition wire that slides onto the blade. The wire coming off the 2nd bolt on the syliniod goes to the body of the starter. The negative cable goes on the transmission side of the top nut and bolt that holds the starter in.

I am an avid do-it your-self-er, but when the 4dr needed a starter I was ready to just pull the engine....very frustrating. Called a mobile mechanic and gave him $200 bucks. Turns out that it wasn't the starter but the battery. Had plenty of volts, lights came on nice and bright, but the battery was old and not able to store "cranking amps". Check your battery...

Turns out it was the ignition switch. Been moving it around the yard by starting it with a jumper wire.

@@trashpandaoffroad3548 better than a starter I suppose...but the ignition switch is no cake walk either. Make a vid of swapping the ignition switch...my Tin Top that I am working on now is going to need one. I had a push button wired in all these years....lol

A friend says he knows a way around with a relay and is willing to help. Hopefully I can get a video of it.

Did you ever get it fixed? If so, what was the fix that did it?
@trashpandaoffroad35486 ай бұрын
The ignition switch wasn't sending enough power to the starter so I added a relay into the system.

As mentioned, the contacts in the switch go bad. They are not designed for the amount of current used...the contacts wear, start getting hot, recess into the switch body when the body starts getting hot (poor contact adds resistance). Put in a pushbutton switch to bypass the column switch. You likely have a dash 'pad' spot that isn't used. Trackers have several of them. At the same time it's a good idea to bypass the connector the switch uses. IT will likely be discolored from heat, too. If you add a new wire TO the starter, FUSE it!! Another issue: Most replacement starters are 8-tooth, not 9-tooth. They work, but turn the motor slower. Too slow for me. ALways sounds strained, even when the battery is fine. I did put in an 8-T, hated it, got the 9-T rebuilt, put it back in. MUCH moh better. Hopefully, you can find a good starter/alternator shop close by. Off-the-shelf 'rebuilt' start/alts from auto retail shops have never worked for me. Not sometimes, not maybe....never.

My car does that same noise. Did you figure out what it is? Any information will help. Mines would click but I’d have to do it like 20 times before it turns over..
@trashpandaoffroad354811 ай бұрын
It is the ignition switch. Try jumping a line from the batter to the starter siliniod and see if that turns the rig over. It's a common issue in the samurai and it is starting to turn up in trackers and sidekicks

Make a hot wire from the spade connection on the starter. Turn the key on and then touch the wire to the battery.

@@trashpandaoffroad3548 if the car starts, then the failure should be the dirty contacts on the switch or a Bad switch? Thanks a let You know what i find.
@trashpandaoffroad354810 ай бұрын
If the car starts its the contacts in the ignition. There is a way to take things apart and clean them or you can just add a relay into the system. That's what I did for now.
