My check engine light came on and I was worried I took it to advance auto parts and they said it’s the thermostat and you literally really made my day!!! I don’t really know much about engines and when I seen you pop the top off and right there was the thermostat!! Thank you so much. When ever I change mine im still gonna have your video on. The broken evap system hose you found is a common failure on these vehicles and one of the reasons the "Small Evap Leak" code (P0456, P0440) comes up. A lot of the info out there suggests replacing the ESIM unit behind the rear driver side wheel well but the connections on the purge valve hose you found are often the culprit. These connections become cracked causing the evap leak. To save money some people wrap with electrical tape or cut the bad hose off and replace the bad section with new hose and hose clamps instead of replacing it entirely.

Joe, thank you for posting this video. I travel 60+ miles one way to work, and the risk of overheating on my commute would suck. I love being able to fix something myself, and I’m not trying to take away from a mechanic… but if more people were knowledgeable enough to manage a small repair…the mechanics can focus their time on more complex issues.

Nice Vid bro. Coolant temp was creeping up y to 3/4 during a 4 hour road trip in 104 degree weather. Was able to buy a thermostat at the local Oreillys swap it out in 25 mins. Dude you are a lifesaver! Thanks!

Nice video, used it as a guide to do mine took only 15-20 minutes. I used one of those pry tools made for removing interior trim fasteners to pull out that plastic fastener, and it did so without breaking it even in the freezing weather here. Thanks for the upload! Now I just have to clear the code and see if that fixed the problem, or if my sensor is bad.
@SSHitMan3 жыл бұрын
Well it was definitely the thermostat, warmed up hotter than usual... then climbed all the way up to 3/4 on the temp gauge, then went back down to right in the middle, a bit warmer than it ran with the old thermostat. But then I generated a brand-new code by forgetting to plug in that air sensor in the air intake. Cleared them both so all is well now!

I have had to do thermostat replacements on a few pentastar motors now. Normally what I do is I'll refill the system with any lost coolant. I'll start it and let it get up to operating temperature. Typically it starts to overheat a little bit and I shut the engine down if it goes above 225 or so and let it cool down fully. That usually draws some coolant out of the recovery bottle and replaces any air. Sometimes I have to do that procedure two or three times. I've never had any problems following this procedure and it doesn't require any special tools. Obviously way too time consuming for a mechanic to do but I've got all the time in the world since I can multitask while I'm waiting for it to cool.

So does the check engine turns off after running a couple of miles after replacing the thermostat or do you have to delete the code? If I have to delete the code can I just disconnect the negative cable or have to be done with the computer
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC3 жыл бұрын
The code should clear on its own after the computer recognizes that you've corrected the underlying cause of the issue. If I recall correctly, it has been a while, I think the check engine light went off on its own before we replaced the thermostat. The owner of the vehicle wanted it changed anyway for peace of mind.

My 2014 jeep is overheating and has no leaks how do i know the thermosthat is the issue?thanks
@JoesGarageProductionsLLC3 жыл бұрын
Overeating can be caused by many things. I would start with the simple things first and make sure you have enough coolant in the system. If you do not check for sources of coolant loss. Check the condition of the oil to see if it is milky which might indicate a blown head gasket or a crack somewhere. Coolant going out the exhaust will have a rather unique smell. If the coolant level is fine, check the condition of your serpentine belt and water pump to make sure the water pump pulley is turning when the engine is running. Also make sure the cooling fan is running when it should. If that all checks out you might want to look at the thermostat next it could be stuck closed.
@JULIANysuHOHNER3 жыл бұрын

You check your maf and map sensors, or clean your throttle body head? Those may need to be changed due to heat and how jeeps are made. Also check your cabin filter (not under the hood , its located under your glove compartment. ) they should be changed when you change your engine filter(not mandatory but its apart of basic maintaince.) Try those I'm doing the same. I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee Jeep.

I don't recall seeing that behavior. Do you know the actual engine temperature? A lot of the gauges they put in cars today are programmed to stay "in the middle" unless something extreme is going on. It might just be coolant that got on the belt, causing it to squeak. Check your belt routing as well. If it still persists, you'll need to isolate the squealing to a component on the front end accessory drive.

@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC I knocked this job out this past weekend and your video was a great help. The worst part is that I dropped my 8mm and then 3/8 to 1/4 adapter removing the air duct, and never found them. Also, despite my best effort not to break that evaporator tube, it broke. Same spot as several other videos I've seen so maybe it was cracked already. Duct taped it as a temp fix. Anyway, the actual thermostat swap was a breeze. Used a plastic bag and some old microfiber cloths to cover the belts and absorb any spillage. The new evaporator tube is coming today so that's the next job. Thanks, man!
