The thermostat is a pretty easy job other than the mess. We see a lot of issues with aftermarket thermostats setting codes, I would recommend a new MOPAR OEM thermostat. Thanks for the view!

Thanks for the great video. I just have a question: Before I replace the thermostat, I am guessing that the P0128 codes could be saved because of a faulty coolant temperature sensor, not the thermostat. The reason I am saying this is because I tried to erase the code but it is still there in the OBD II. Some codes are temporary saved on the engine’s ECM and some permanent in OBD II. I successfully erased the ECM but the OBD II code does not go away. Do you still think that the permanent code will go away after changing the thermostat and driving it for a while, or the problem is from the sensor? Thanks.
@TylerPotter
@TylerPotter 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think we have every really had any issues with the temp sensor, that P0128 code always indicates a thermostat, after replacement we clear the codes with the factory scan tool. But I guess there is always a possibility that a temp sensor could go bad.
@thefrugaljeeper4054
@thefrugaljeeper4054 11 ай бұрын
Temp sensor does go bad, too with the same code. I found driving it for two to three days will clear the CEL. Clearing the CEL with an OBD scanner will only temporarily clear it but won’t fix it.

I should’ve realized I needed an electric screw to remove the 10mm bolts. If that’s what you’re using? ( I’m not to car smart either ) I managed to change my front blinker lights. I bought everything for the replacement of the thermostat. And couldn’t go any further.. due to the bolts.

I dont know why but somehow this video was incredibly soothing. Its been over 90 degrees and my Cherokee has been running a little hotter than normal... Then I got a slight whiff of antifreeze with the LO blower going.... Shes fluctuating in stop and go between 190 & 215-220 ... Is that normal?
@TylerPotter

Thanks! Any 220 is not outranges but I wouldn't hurt with the coolant smell to see if there is a coolant leak starting from somewhere, ie. waterpump radiator, thermostat we don't see too many heater core leak issues with cherokees but it could still happen, Thanks for the view!

Does the Thermostat have anything to do with the blowers not working ? I got the P0128 code in my 2015 JG Cherokee Overland, but now the blowers do not work. Im sure I have a faulty blower motor too. I have found that if I kind of bang the blower motor compartment that the blowers kick back on… so do you think I have a loose connection there ? Thanks!

Newbie question: When you removed the bleeder screw and filled with coolant until some came out, was that “bleeding” it?

I took a trip and went up a grade for a bit. Temp got to 219/221 and I had to turn off AC and put in heater full speed to get temp down. I was traveling 400 miles and cld not turn back. All the way I was at 203 to 208 when on decline or flat and with AC on. but when climbing this 2015 grand cherokee 3.6l would rise to 217 or more and I had to repeat the heater thing. What is causing that? No codes are coming up, fluid was replaced less than a yr ago. Any suggestions for me? Also how hot can it get before I should stop? I was got to 221 and was thinkin I would pull over if it got to 225 for safety reason but not sure what this engine can really take so curious as to your thoughts. Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

It sounds like the electric cooling fan may not be coming on or there may be some air in the cooling system, you could idle the jeep with the a/c on and the hood open and watch for the cooling fan to come on and start running, it should with the a/c turned on after a little while. If the fan works I would want to check and make sure the cooling system is bled of all the air, there is a coolant bleed screw on the top of the thermostat housing. Thanks for the view!

It’s probably too late to hear this but some thermostats that are after market don’t work perfectly. You can put a brand new part on something and if that part don’t fit the manufactures specifications the your light will stay on. I know it’s more expensive, but if you can afford it, always get the part from the manufacturer that made your vehicle. They know what’s best for your vehicle. I’ve been turning wrenches my whole life, went to college and got my certifications, and I’ve worked on a ton of vehicles. The majority of things I work on have mostly all been after market parts that didn’t come from the dealer. I do my absolute best to persuade any of my customers that I do work for in my shop to always go with the part straight from the dealer. I don’t make more money because I’m selling you a more expensive part, I only make money turning wrenches and keeping the cars flowing smoothly in and out through my shop. There are obviously some aftermarket parts that are just as good though and in some cases even better than what the dealer has. First thing I would do man, is to completely disconnect the battery both the positive and negative terminals, and let it sit over night. Plug her back up the next morning and see if the light goes away, if not then go buy a new thermostat from the dealer that made your vehicle. I got a list I’ve wrote up on my desk in my shop of after market parts that will throw a code to the engine even when they are brand new, and a thermostat is on that list. If you got it from advanced auto parts, OReilys, or Napa then more than likely it’s not meeting the manufacturers specifications. They sell a lot of hot garbage there, not all of it, but some of their stuff is just terrible.
