After having to move the old antenna for my family every time they changed the channel, I just ended up buying this antenna for my family and I never had to move it again. I was also amazed by how thick the cable is compared to other antennas I’ve used. Definitely worth it.

It's nice to see an honestly marketed product in this category. This delivers performance as good as can be expected for this type of antenna and doesn't make claims that it can't fulfill. Well done, Channel Master.

This Antenna is amazing. Its amazing how much of a difference a high quality coaxial cable makes. I had an old RCA rabbit ears with that cheap thin cable rga59. Went from 17 channels to 81 channels based on tylers antenna reccomendations. Same location. Same spot where the old rabbit ears were. Im about an estimated 15-18miles away from the towers. Everything is pretty clear. Thx tyler!

Sounds like this antenna was a very good fit for you. You are well within the area where most indoor antennas would work. In my area, Farnsworth Peak is a little over 20 miles away, but still well within the local coverage contour of many of my local TV stations. However, I have begun to have serious issues pulling in a Telemundo affiliate on virtual channel 10, but the fact that they duplicate their programming on KTMW (virtual channel and RF 20) and KEJT-LD (virtual channel 50) more than makes up for it. My guess is that the physical RF channel for virtual channel 10 is probably also 10. There was another that broadcasted on virtual channel and RF channel 12, and these paper-style antennas have their gain optimized for UHF (RF 14-36, 470-608 MHz) far more than VHF (RF 2-13, 54-216 MHz).

I live about 35 miles from the Boston antenna farm in Needham MA. I use the Flatenna and it works great. I'm 25 -30 miles from the Providence RI stations and they come in 5x5 also from the opposite direction. I do use the amplified version, picture quality looks better than the cable I once had. I did find out the antenna picks up almost nothing if behind the screen, but raising above the screen nailed it. I highly recommend the Flatenna.

I bought this antenna off Amazon based on your recommendation and it's amazing! I cut the cord with Comcast after they raised TV rates and were actually charging me for "free" local tv! I bought the amplified version of the antenna and the picture quality is crystal clear. Thank you very much for a great analysis!

Tyler, I purchased the Channel Master FLATenna to replace a similar thin antenna that had a tiny cable saddered to it. Got about a 25% increase in signal strength and a few stations I hadn't been receiving before. With the FLATenna, I believe the increase in signal strength is due to the superior lead-in cable supplied with the FLATenna -- the cable on my prior antenna was so thin I would not want to use it even to pass AUDIO signals-- let alone UHF! Thanks for the review and the suggestion!

I bought this CM antenna several months ago after reading the reviews elsewhere that it worked very well. I needed a longer piece of RG6, so I ran 25 feet of Quad Shield RG6 over into the room with the window facing the translators. This antenna easily scanned in all local translators including our flea power ch 34 at 650 watts. All are LOS at 11-12 miles, but some a weaker than others. I bought this for a backup in-case the 91XG Yagi failed in the Winter storms. I am pleased with the Channel Master antenna at $25. It works better than any indoor antenna I have tried. For the size, it is amazing. I have a book shelf right next to the window, so all I did to test it was to slip in in-between the pages of a book facing North. That was it, hooked it up and scanned in the channels. By the way, I did not buy the one with the booster as I figured it may degrade the signal. Thank you for reviewing this great antenna and it is at a great price too!

By the way, I recently bought a Tablo as I wanted a good guide. At first I could not get the wifi to work on the Tablo. It just needed to be updated. Anyway, I had to use the Tablo in the computer room so I could use Ethernet in the beginning, and I had to use the CM flat antenna. It got all of our UHF LPTV's & translators. This CM Flat antenna continues to amaze me on how well it work considering the size. For $20 it is a bargain. Thanks for the great review! By the way, we have no VHF stations here, and that even surprises me more that it picks of High VHF.

Channel Master stands out by using an F-connector and including quality coax rather than a built-in cheap RG59 cable. I may get one to see how well it performs in my building as many of my neighbors (1,000 unit condo community) often ask about antennas and $20 is great deal for this one. I'm sure it can pick up the DC stations, but I'm curious if it will receive the Baltimore ones.

After watching this video, I ordered this directly from Channel Master. Twenty bucks (nine dollars cheaper than Amazon) and free shipping. Took less than a week via USPS. I had a crappy old flimsy antenna that never got all the channels, and I had to constantly move it. This one rocks. It took me three different locations before I found the perfect spot. Got nearly double the number of channels--including all the ones I want (not just the weird ones that I don't care about)! And this is even though I live in exactly the wrong apartment; it faces the opposite direction to the towers, and the previous tenant told me he never had much luck. So thanks, Antenna Man! Best twenty bucks I could have spent!

I've had a few older Mohu Leaf antennas' connected with RG6 cables for years. I just purchased this CM antenna and to my surprise it outperformed my Mohu antennas. I installed it in my most problematic location on a wall (no window) facing the local antenna transmitters. It picked up 86 stations, my other antennas' only picked up about 57 stations and could not pick-up a couple of the major broadcast stations in my area. The CM solved the reception problem in this trouble spot. I've decided to buy another CM antenna to improve reception in another area. Mohu was top of the line for flat antennas when I purchased them, but CM has improved upon the design.

Thanks. This might be better than the top-rated model comparison-tested by Consumer Reports, the Winegard FlatWave Amped FL5500A that costs ~$60. They tested 19 various types but this Channel Master model wasn’t among them. It’s ironic that for once a Channel Master model antenna cost less than Winegard that can found discounted from the list price. The Consumer Reports testing methodology was flawed in that they did not use the same make and model television at the several home locations the tests were done but their statistical analysis was valid/good and overall they found no correlation for performance and price.
@c2jones
@c2jones 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not Consumer Reports, but I can tell you from direct experience through years of experimentation at this, my older Winegard flatwave clearly outperforms anything I've ever tried in my location (and that's well over a couple dozen competitors) and it's the one I'm still using. Ratings and reviews, good or bad, have had me testing everything. But this nonamplified Winegard (I'm too close to the tower for an amplifier) still simply works the best and I always end up staying with what I have, and that's with the thinner (fixed) coaxial cable and splitting the signal to two television sets throughout my home. It's true. I get 120+ channels from a 10 year-old RV store, flatwave window antenna. Many channels are at 1080i and 720p. No reason to upgrade beyond stability. I am thinking of giving this featured antenna a try, but my instinct tells me that I'm better off trying the tuner that Tyler recommended, as it may lock in stability better on windy days. Or may not. Maybe will try both.

Remember that the conductive elements are hidden inside. Copper costs more than plastic. Electrically good plastic costs more than cheap plastic. The balun that converts the signal impedance to match the coax involves copper wire an a core. On a really cheap antenna they may skip that part and just wire the cable straight to the elements.

I use a one element indoor bow tie antenna I made of copper wire. Works great for UHF and fair for VHF-High. Low power UHF station 26 miles away is on the hairy edge of reception. So probably good to 35 miles or so for full power stations. All the other stations here are 16 miles LOS. So this antenna works very well. Even with low power VHF-high channel. Reliably gets every channel from that transmitter farm. Both UHF and VHF-high.

Amplifiers are a noise source. So an amp may cause signals that are weak to be too noisy. Amps are best used for compensating for the loss of long cable runs. For this the amp should be placed as far up cable (closest to antenna as possible). A long cable run that may benefit from an amp is probably about 30+ feet. If not running cable at least 20 feet, I wouldn't even consider an amp. It will probably inject more noise than what the cable loss is.

I purchased the amplified version about 5 years ago, so it may have changed a little since then. I tried it out at two different houses. Both about the same distance from the towers. One house on slightly higher ground and less trees around it. The house with less trees and sitting higher I could get 42 channels five being your basics. The others the sub-channels.. Including VHF channel 9. At the other house I got nothing. Location makes a big difference….

Channel master is a good brand tyler. My friend seen the last video in which you take a paperclip and put it into the antenna input of the converter box and you got a broadcast, well he took a piece of gold round tubbing and inserted it in the antenna input and then scanned it and picked up stations from as far as ohio and west virginia and even altoona and johnstown. He picked up 56 STATIONS with a piece of gold wire tyler. So it's not just a small simple paperclip that can pick up stations. the better the medal whether it's silver or gold, the more stations you could receive tyler

While there are always exceptions, my opinion is that even the best "flat antenna" is still not a satisfactory solution for most. This is because flat antennas are all designed to be isotropic, so there is no directional gain. Reflected/multi-path signals will be received from behind the antenna and won't be filtered; the multi-path signal will degrade the SNR and pixelate broadcasts. Always best to have a directional/high-gain antenna pointing towards the local TV towers! I've had great luck with RCA's ANT705Z antenna mounted in a vaulted ceiling space in my apartment, about 10 miles from the towers.

Honest truth here. In my situation, I live like the sum of 2 counties over from where the stations and the towers are and at one time, I had a flat antenna with a hair thin cable and it could only pick up like one main station and actually 4 stations in all and I did the signal meter on it and it only responded with one light showing up and I did the rabbit ears with the hair thin cable on the signal meter and that only gave me one light on the signal meter. The Channel Master FLATenna with the thick RG6 Cable gave me one light on the signal meter without the Wingard Booster and three lights on the signal meter with the Winegard Booster. Also, when I visited Orlando Florida one time and with the included RG6 Cable and the Winegard Booster I went from getting 4 stations in all to like 50 Stations in all. I like how Channel Master gives you the choice to accessorize this FLATenna with what works for your situation the way that Mohu Leaf Antennas, Amplified Boostwaves Razor Antenna, Clearstream Eclipse Antenna, Mediasonic Homeworx Antenna does and not having a cable cord built into the antenna the way most others do. It is a big game changer for me.

I have my doubts. FCC tends to lower authorized power whenever they think transmission is going to go farther. They did it with analog to digital and will likely also do it with ATSC 1.0 to ATSC 3.0. They err on the side of caution to protect against interference, which is (believe it or not) their main mission.

Did the antenna perform well because it is a better antenna than others or did it perform better because of the thicker cable? I'm sure the thicker cable helped, but how much of a factor was the antenna itself? Did you attempt to hook up a thinner cable to test the difference?
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say. I did not try hooking up a cheaper cable. Regardless of whether it was the antenna or the cable, it's worth noting that this model actually allows you to connector your own cable which seems to be rare among flat antennas.

The cable affects more than people think. I have an RCA with a cheap thin cable, I have to adjust the cable as part of the antenna it is that bad. That said, not all RCA branded antennas are junk. I have a rather substantial thickness flat antenna with a proper RG6 coax on it also branded RCA.
@mikemandell132

With a cable this short the RF loss is minimal either way, unless the thin cable was junk or the connector was defective. Cable type is real important in longer runs.

When I was young we had a ungrounded antenna lighting struck a pine-tree near the antenna then at the height of the antenna jumped from the tree to the antenna and burned out everything that was plugged into a wall outlet. Even though I have grounded my antenna now days that still remains in my head.

This antenna works great for me, but the slightest shift in position drops channels. I live in a second-floor condo in metro Atlanta and all networks are within 15 miles in the same general direction. I'm not sure how it would perform in other conditions. So for these flat antenna, what do you use to "mount" them like it seems like it would be simple but all the double sided adhesion tape they give usually gives out in a week and then falls. Even the heavy duty picture ones still fail and they had horrible reviews because of this. I don't know if piercing it with thumbtacks would "break" the antenna

I cut cord recently and don’t regret it for the most part. But in my experience, these hd antennas are hugely unreliable. I bought Mohu plus with amplifier. If you think you can just stick it on the wall and be done with it, guess again. With luck you might get 80% if channels. Then a few days later, it starts to pixelate and you have to adjust it again. If you find the sweet spot, Mohu is reliable. But even then, there are some channels that require separate positions. I live in LA and to get abc7, I have to actually drop the antenna on the floor. To get kcal9 I have to move it about midwall. And I have to find THE PERFECT SPOT to be 95% free of pixelation. The tiniest deviation results in signal loss. Imagine yourself waking around the room with antenna in hand like you were one of those people seeking underground water with wooden stick. It becomes a chore. Thankfully for my parents the Asian language, tbn and Sinclair stations come up reliably. I’m so amused that my old onn Walmart antenna can pick up metv well but to watch abc, owned by behemoth Disney, I have to hope for a miracle. If America was a poorer nation, it’s people would howl with rage at having to deal with this headache to watch free tv. But we just moved onto piecemeal streaming culture.

It is better to call these just "TV antennas". The design of the antenna has nothing to do with the "NDness" of the TV signals they receive. Changing performance when things move in the area is a common issue with indoor antennas. The old fashioned rabbit ears on top of the TV set in some ways were a better design. You could easily make fine adjustments to the position and the length of the elements. On a flat antenna changing location is your only option. A TV or tuner with a signal meter feature is a good thing to have when adjusting.

Ah....you youngsters don't appreciate the old days where indoor antennas were appended with various aluminum foil shapes to improve reception. Or even some young kid (me at times) was appointed to touch one of the elements to improve the analog signal enough to make it out. And this was after walking home 6 miles from school in the snow.

@@mikemandell132 Luxury! You only had 6 miles to go and could slow down to a walk. We had to run 10 miles to school in the morning and back home at night. It also was up hill in both directions. BTW: An aluminum foil bowtie antenna works quite well. As an experiment I made one taped to a cardboard box. It worked slightly better than the best adjustment I could get on the rabbit ears.

@@mikemandell132 In the 90s my family used a bunny ear antenna for one of the tvs in the living room and it worked pretty well. I'm not that young but I wasn't alive in the 60s or 70s and maybe reception was an issue back then.

Hi fantastic video again do you know in the UK 🇬🇧 if I am using a antenna or sky Q the British people have to pay 💰 a TV license 🪪 under £160 a year what a joke because of the license fee I don’t watch live TV 📺

The TV license also subsidizes some news gathering efforts by the BBC. This is important in a democracy. The for profit companies will tend to bias news in a way to favor the for profit model. BBC has a different bias.

Bought the Channel Master FLATenna for my Vizio TV. However, the thickness of the cable and where the antenna plug-in on my tv is, does not allow me to directly screw in the coax into the tv. I tried manipulating the cable while using an open-end wrench, but that seemed like forcing the cable in. Notice fine metal particles on the set after trying this method. Is there an coax extender that can attach to the tv so I can easily screw in the antenna?

I had a leaf, in Leavenworth Kansas it's reception was terrible, even on Signal Hill in Kansas City, every time a large vehicle went barreling down Southwest, forget it. In Oak Grove it was semi-dependable, had a Mansard roof, trash days were terrible, each apartment selected its own trash hauler, with a rollie bin, the truck pulls up and bye bye signal

Thanks for your review. I am moving from the Dallas area to a smaller city that is 39 miles away from the broadcast towers according to the Rabbit Ears link you mentioned. I plan in getting this antenna or the flat Winegard amplified one you reviewed. Which one do you recommend? I have a Terk ota that works well in the Dallas area. Thanks.

@AntennaMan Жыл бұрын
39 miles away is a stretch for an indoor antenna. Both antennas work about the same, but you may end up needing an attic or outdoor antenna if neither works. You can find a list of recommended antennas below: www.amazon.com/shop/antennaman/list/2LH365VAPDKLC?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d

At least she's not in Mountainville, I couldn't get anything on a antenna there in analog days. My roommate too went satellite when he got a new apartment to live in, his building gave him flack putting the dish up but finally consented after he showed them the law, it's probably still screwed on his balcony railing even though he passed away 4 years ago. Where we lived, we could chose cable providers on that street, but only one company had cable internet, it required in the day, it's own phone line to send data back to the cable office, anytime a storm hit, the DHCP server went down, we had to call the tech support number and report it the next day.. oh RCN (They've changed names I heard) and SECTV, I hated you both, but in that area it was a necessary evil. I don't think his hometown of slatington could get Wilkes-Barre
