I don't think this is true, polls showed people like me were going to vote conservative instead of labour. The polls show a surge of support for labour in the final couple of weeks. I think that observation is accurate. The tories and May were so fucking bad (strong and stable, leadership debate, nhs) with such unethical policies (surveillance, grammars, brexit) that Jeremy walked it. Conservative support will continue to decline as it continues to fuck up the country, that has fuck all to do with the PLP and you should just accept it.
@djoakeydoakey1076
@djoakeydoakey1076 7 жыл бұрын
Born2Bash CP That's a bloody good point. If MP's gave the support, May might not have done a snap election. This is probably the best case scenario. Saying that though May is now joining with some unsavoury types, short term that's bad case scenario. But long term is a good scenario?! Politics is complicated.
@Dave-xr3rj
@Dave-xr3rj 7 жыл бұрын
Also recall that he DID have support from his MPs at the start. He is the one who let things descend after more than a year to what they were. Jeremy loves campaigning and the PLP have been distracted and reminded that he wins campaigns, and they are happy about it. But that doesn't mean he's suddenly going to operate an effective opposition. I predict that things could easily return to where they were next year ifJeremy behaves in exactly the same ineffective way, letting his shouty SPADs outrank his MPs under the safety of your support..thereby redividing Labour. Labour's unity today is thanks to the conservatives, not Jeremy and not the PLP

Some of the commenters here seem not to understand context. Each election doesn't happen in a vacuum, it happens in relation to previous elections. Labour gained 30 seats and a 10% increase in vote share. Many Labour marginals saw huge increases in majority, many Tory safe seats are now closer to being marginals. That's how the election can be a success, despite the banal fact that Labour 'lost', if that's what you can even call forcing a hung parliament. Also at the start of the contest, May was the most popular (highest approval) leader of all time, and Corbyn the least (lowest). Polling suggests they are now equal, or Corbyn ahead. That is a terrific turn around in the space of a month.

"But he lost and she won! Context means nothing to me! Wah wah wah" - Tory voters.
@britishjohn04
@britishjohn04 7 жыл бұрын
Context is irrelevant because it deals in subjective expectations and not factual outcome. For arguments sake lets follow your line of thinking. The Tories also have something to celebrate because they increased their vote share from the Cameron win in 2015, have support not seen since Margaret Thatcher, and managed a comeback in Scotland, a part of the UK where the Tories tend to struggle. It is as though everyone wants to look at Labour's performance with a generous context, but apply no such generosity to assessing the conservative performance. Double standard.
@chrisdoherty9466
@chrisdoherty9466 7 жыл бұрын
Except you are correct, Scottish Tories should celebrate, and the Tories in general did have a very high vote share. But you need to look wider. The context for the Tories includes that they had a majority, and lost it. They didn't need to call this election, so it is a self inflicted wound. They called it to get a massive majority, and they lost seats. They lost a 20 point lead in the polls. So there are some reasons for celebration, but overall you can see why they might not be as cheerful.

Ben is correct, It's really not as simple as that. It is quite right that conservatives are less ethical, but it is their principles that are responsible for that. Try not to over simplify the world and then exclaim without thinking. That language leads to a groundswell of stupid people, which is how we got Trump as "leader" of the world. the young can't remember how terrible Labour are with the economy. Part of the reason why we cannot fund social policies properly is that we are still drowning in labour debt. Granted the Tories are not much of a better alternative, but at least they have a basic grasp of economics.
@robfilth
@robfilth 7 жыл бұрын
The Tories have no grasp of economics, in the last 7 years they've borrowed and created more debt than every single Labour Government put together.
@robfilth
@robfilth 7 жыл бұрын
You can't completely lie to the Public Sector indefinitely by slashing their wages and funding telling them it's going towards repairing the economy and then give all of the money saved to the corporate elite in tax cuts whilst borrowing even more money and increasing the national debt - because that's called blatant lying, not economic prudence. That's not a basic grasp of economics but a sleight of hand con-trick. There is not a single nurse, firefighter nor indeed many cops(who have always historically usually loyally supported the Tory Party) who will have voted for the lying Tories in the last election. And there will be even less for the next election thanks to the economic turbulent forces of Brexit really hitting the middle earners by then, something which the Tories didn't bother to risk-assess before running their pointless EU referen-dumb.

Elmo9001 Corbyn had no good policies - they would cause a severe economic crisis in the form of a massive budget deficit. Second, he changed so many of his views throughout the campaign. Changing his views on shoot to kill, on terrorists and his sympathy for them, on trident..... he's u turned on more policies that Theresa May. How someone could ever vote for someone who only became electable two months ago is beyond me
@Elmo9001
@Elmo9001 7 жыл бұрын
Changing his views on sympathy for terrorists? Outside of the wet dreams of Daily Mail readers, he never had any sympathy for terrorists. And I don't see how a fully costed manifesto approved by an independent financial committee could lead to a massive budget deficit, especially when compared to the completely uncosted Tory manifesto.
@theoschmidt8305
@theoschmidt8305 7 жыл бұрын
Elmo9001 The manifesto was ratified by a group of around 100 'economists' yes - it was. Among these people was around 15 self-proclaimed 'economists' and a professor of psychology from the university of Bangalore. Hardly the people you want to be confirming anything on your manifesto. The manifestos 'costing' is a complete disaster - higher corporation tax would force small businesses out of business, and so would the higher minimum wage. The Conservative party is the true party of the working classes, lower taxes, and the ability to pursue your own life without the government reaching into your pocket taking every 3rd penny. Labour policies are completely misguided, it's a shame how people only followed Corbyn for his personality, and weren't prepared to stand by May even though she's had a bad campaign
@Elmo9001
@Elmo9001 7 жыл бұрын
"The Conservative party is the true party of the working classes." Ahahahahaha! Hahahahaha - fuck off. Typical Tory argument. Labour's manifesto was costed by 100 economists, but 15 of them might not be that great! So really, it was costed by... 85 qualified economists. Take your 'Actually, it's bad to tax rich people!' propaganda and piss off.
@theoschmidt8305
@theoschmidt8305 7 жыл бұрын
Elmo9001 I don't think it's a bad idea to tax rich people, and it's a typical labour voter who gives into such stereotypes. The conservatives slashed taxes on those earning under 100k. People in the factory I work in wouldn't dream of voting labour. Under the conservatives we've seen an increase in the tax allowance and a decrease in the percentage of tax on the working class. Labour would undo all of this in favour of a few policies which would marginally benefit society at the cost of billions. Free tuition would give the rich a free pass on education whilst costing the working class extra tax. A nationalised rail insdustry would cost more in tax than it would save in ticket costs. Blair had far better spending policies, which focused on business investment over free social goodies which 80% of society don't need, and which would cost the middle 50% far more than anyone else

Blair has constantly virtually accused Corbyn of being an antisemite without saying Corbyn is antisemite, even though there has never been any evidence of Corbyn being one. The right wing the labour party thought they got him to resign by being was tricked into loving that antisemitic mural by a right wing labour colleage via a conversation over the telephone, but he never even seen it before, he was clearly set up, and of course the gutter press immediately ccused Corbyn of being an antisemite That is a clear example of how much the right wing of labour hated him, ring leader Blair. He also did everything to hound Corbyn out of the labour party ever since Corbyn became labour leader, and he finally succeeded yesterday. I suspect that it was Blair behind the antisemitism crisis all along and he probably aided and abetted the gutter press to smear Corbyn. Blair did it in a very nasty covert fashion. Blair is despicable. I suspect Blair will do ths same to Starmer as he did to Cobyn the moment if Starmer drifts even a touch a left of the New Labour agenda with the gutter press smearing Starmer like they did to Milliband and Corbyn. It will not be antisemitism per Corbyn, it will be something else they'll find to smear Starmer with.

Below 150 seats for Corbyn always was a wildly inaccurate forecast. And he campaigned against No Deal in both elections and achieved 262 seats and 202 seats. Brown, Milliband, Howard, Hague and Major (1997) did worse than Corbyn seatwise in 2017, and Howard, Hague and Major (1997) did worse seat wise than Corbyn in 2019. Ans Corbyn's share of rhe vote in both elections was still better than all of the other leaders of one of the 2 main parties who lost a general election since the 1970's. Cprbyn wsd hardly the worst performer in a general election. Hague, Howard and Major (1997) would have lost to Corbyn had they both faced Corbyn. Smith would have destroyed both Hague and Howard plus Major in general elections had he lived.

I think May could have done just fine during the election if she didn't take the electorate for granted. She had an over 20% lead at one point, but she squandered it by refusing to call the debates, sleep walking through the campaign and not putting through a fully thought out manifesto before the election. Which I think is a shame because May had all the tools to be able to be a great PM if she played her cards right, but she's shot herself in the foot here. She'll either have to learn from this mistake and work to regain the trust of the electorate, or the Tory's will have to pick another leader who can regain the party's popularity.

The Polls didn't take into account the newly registered voters (250,000) the press down played that basically saying "yeah, but they probably wont vote" and the austerity measures placed on aged care flipped most of the undecided voters. My pragmatic side thought it would be a Hung Parliament, as this happened in Australia with Turnbull but my Heart hoped for a slim Corbyn majority. Would love someone in the Australian Labor Party to find a spine and give us something to vote for!
