Mhairi Black is the SNP Member of Parliament for Paisley and Renfrewshire South. She was elected as an MP in 2015 when she was only 20 years old, making her the youngest MP elected to the House of Commons since 1832.
She talks to Krishnan about her SNP politics, why she wants to transform the Westminster bubble and the 'sinister' threats to our democracy.

@ 35:07 the quote is "Fascism: I sometimes fear that people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress worn by grotesques and monsters as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis. Fascism arrives as your friend. It will restore your honour, make you feel proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up the neighbourhood, remind you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove anything you feel is unlike you... It doesn't walk in saying, "Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution." michael rosen

A brilliant interview! Mhairi Black speaks in plain understandable language, with refreshing truth . She tells people how antiquainted and sinister the UK Houses of Parliament is,----more clearly than I ever realised. No other MP has lifted the lid, (as far I know,) on the place and the dubious nature of many of the country`s MPs that are in there. It sounds truly horrific, and should be converted to a museum to the mis-Governing history of this country. In these times, we need to be using a modern building with up-to-date style voting on bills and get rid of the 1st-past-the-post system voting for the MPs.

I very rarely comment on these discussions but Mhairi is an amazing, talented and principled lady. Very sharp and erudite. This is the next First Minister of Scotland in a few years time. Independence may be as close as five years. It is quite an indicative statement when life as a Politician in Parliament, she feels that there is something wrong with her because she has a strong moral compass. Keep up the good fight; one day your vision of society may have a chance to thrive.

"Scotland being an after thought in this place." They're not the only ones - the north of England, Northern Ireland, Wales, are all 'after thoughts'. And none more than NI in regards to the referendum. Who actually brought up the issue of NI and the GFA during the runup to the referendum? Who actually explained what affect a 'leave' vote could have on NI? And who cared when voting 'leave'? Love listening to Mhairi Black.

Very few. Coming from an Irish man when our former Taoiseach Enda Kenny visited the UK to tell the Irish issue and dimension to all of this, he was disgracefully ridiculed as a scaremongerer by your MPs and ofc Vote Leave. Indeed it was perfect pickings for the "Project Fear" spinners. www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/british-mp-criticises-enda-kenny-s-offensive-brexit-comments-1.2530108 Since 2015, everyone on the island of Ireland (excpet ofc the DUP and UPP) well warned of this scenario, that brexit was completely incompatible with the GFA, and those who were spearheading the Leave campaign were deliberately silent on NI. I think the only British parties and MPs to speak of such were the SNP, Greens and some experienced Labour figures. And Jeremy Corbyn above all, he was early to talk about this in 2015 with Sinn Féin.

We'll, there is actually nothing wrong in the "emotional" (i'd rather call it "identitarian") side of supporting Independence. I do not believe nationalism itself is wrong. It only becomes dangerous when it turns extreme and excludes people. But pride in the place you were born and belief in the right to self-goverment is perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned.

Whether you like Mharie or the SNP or not, that's not what I'm taking about, I mean we need more normal working class people that know what real life is like. Not out of touch and completely detached from reality politician's. We have MP's heading defence that have never been near the army, we have MP's heading pensions and welfare that have never had to struggle and had everything handed to them on a plate. That have been brought up with disdain and hatred for people on benefits. MP's heading The NHS that would rather it didn't exist and don't have to rely on it personally. She'll be First Minister one day. I think she's brilliant. Open, honest, intelligent she has clarity of thought and above all I think she's kind. She says she's been brought up to think about other people's points of view and I think she does - whilst holding her own views but I'm sure that she's not blinkered and is open to other viewpoints. She's got a real life view of the world that comes from living a normal life. If only there were more like her at Westminster.

I like that woman, having had my own taste at politics from like 3rd row. I can absolutely verify a lot of what she stated, especially about the mentality that runs through all parties across. If she knew what goes on in Brussels, she would want to leave the EU too. Because all she dislikes about Westminster, exception on the specifics of dimensions inside Westminster, all that is part of Brussels too same ways of doing things. If I was a Scottish citizen, I’d vote for her 😊.

There is definitely a lot more to see of her, even here on KZbin. Just search for her name and you can also use the filters to narrow the search parameters. Æ

Absolutely amazing.. more people should be speaking out about the horrible way Westminster works and making practicle, real world suggestions on how it could be fixed. Channel 4 News proving again that they see the bigger picture and aren't complicit with an eroding political system. Thank you.

@@saxglend9439 going after someone's looks, that's mature. I'm also a Canadian, so to be honest I'm not quite sure what the difference is between Labour and Lib Dem. There wasn't much that Mhairi said that I disagreed with here but if you'd like to state contrary positions rather than attack someone's looks then have at it.

You can join the SNP, join the London branch (which is home to all members outwith Scotland), come to conference as a delegate and vote alongside her for progressive policies and officers - unfortunately there's a significant er "socially conservative" wing of the party who you _can_ help oppose.
