Support for gay marriage in Ireland reaches 65 per cent with just the final votes to be counted - a resounding yes which forces the hugely influential Catholic church into turmoil after it opposed the change.

In America, 1 in 2 marriages end in divorce In Britain 2 in 5 marriages end in divorce let's focus on our marriages before we go around telling people who they can and cannot marry

Can I just say that I am Catholic and voted yes and couldn't be happier with the result, not all Christians are blind to equality. When the result came in, I may have cried a little bit :)

I believe that Civil Marriage has nothing to do with religion that's why I voted yes, while religion and marriage used to be intertwined, it no longer is, that's why I voted yes, obviously Catholicism and marriage are two separate entities now so I couldn't justify voting no on religious grounds when they weren't asking for religious marriage, only civil marriage, and I believe that the state should not govern on the rules of religion, Irish politicians have shown us that they are incapable of doing so in a good way

Aisling Bolton what do you say about churches supporting gay marriage,it should be called civil union not civil marriage,churches which allow gay marriage are apostate and heretic churches,and should be condemned by all christians,goverment has right to accept gay marriage but churches not,democracy is not allowed in church like it is in society,and they(gay community) have no right to seek christians approval and tolerance,because they dont deserve it,nor should they judge us because of our intolerance,i dont understand why gays are so judgmental about us,they probably hate us because we dont approve or accept them.

I think Churches have the right not to officiate same sex marriages, if that makes them obsolete then that's what happens, but they have the right to stick to their principals, I think in this day age when we talk about equality and rights all the time we have to recognize that the Church has the right to stick to its beliefs, no one is forced to listen to the church or to go to Church so why can't they have their beliefs, at the end of the day in the eyes of the State the marriage between a gay couple is no less important than that of a straight couple and that's the main thing. Let the Church practice its beliefs, forcing people to believe what you believe undermines the idea of free speech and freedom of religion
@MusicManTrailersx
@MusicManTrailersx 9 жыл бұрын
Aisling Bolton Its up to State to decide are they going to allow gays to marry,but what really irritates me is that church is going the same path of acceptance and tolerance,when its obviously against doctrines of Bible and whole christian belief,church has right to force its belief on those who belong to church and that religion,but not to others who are not.I think its fair enough
@aislingbolton793
@aislingbolton793 9 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree with you the Church should have and does have the right to refuse to officiate same sex weddings, but I don't think the church should be forceful in its beliefs. I think they should follow Jesus' example, in that He never forced his beliefs on His followers but rather thought them how to do things and led by example. I think the Church has gained a reputation of being forceful. And yes I agree with your last point, if the Church forces its belief on those who do not belong to the Church then it's not belief at all.

Askaro Thank you Askaro for your kind words. In the USA we are awaiting a decision in June from our Supreme Court regarding gay marriage. Sadly, the USA has never been progressive on civil rights; it always has to be forced by court order (and even civil war) to do what is right.
@thatzefa6734
@thatzefa6734 9 жыл бұрын
newacct4yt yeah i heard a lot about the the USA having problems with the civil rights. Its really sad. But the actuel problem is, that gay people have to ask for their rights. I think, that most of the people are like children. They think they invented the marriage and now they are like: "its mine and i dont want to share it!". There is no reason why gay people shouldnt be allowed to marry each other. Ive got at least 20 arguements in my mind why gay marriage should be legal, but people wouldnt even listen, so it doesnt make ans sence to write them down here. 😟 Btw: i hope your sepreme court can do something about your rights, because Germany e.g., showed us once again, that it is still intolerant and not ready to change anything.😒

I am British and I say very welldone to the Republic of Ireland. I don't really agree with it being put to a public vote (as the rights of minorities shouldn't be allowed to be trampled upon by the majority) but I understand this is a constitutional requirement. In a way though this fact that it was decided upon by ordinary voters makes the victory more significant and more sweet. It is good to see that the Republic of Ireland is now not like it was in the past where the politicians were afraid of doing some things because of the power of the Roman Catholic church. Before, you were a bit like a Western European version of those Islamic hellholes in the Middle-East. Now, you are a modern secular country where the state decides things and isn't afraid of the Roman Catholic Church. As for the issue itself, life will go on as normal for the straight people and making gay CIVIL marriage legal will NOT destroy Irish society. Now, all we have to do is to get those numbskulls in Northern Ireland to see sense and come into the modern world and also the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.

Well done to Ireland for accepting gay marriage!, now we truly do have equality in some places, I just hope other countries do the same, the thing I don't understand is why should there of even been a vote in the first place? This is about EQUAL RIGHTS, the government should just allow it, Who gives a shit of the bigoted religious assholes who r against it, gay marriage isn't the only thing these people are against, most religions are holding humanity back from human achievements and most don't get along with other people, maybe the world should bane religion and see how religious people feel about it. If u don't believe in equal rights then u shouldn't live on this planet, Diversity is one of the things that makes us as a species amazing, let's all be different, make the planet we live on interesting.

Straight to name calling? And a patronising explanation of the situation. Fantastic start. You have missed the point I was trying to make. I don't know you're position, but mine is this; gay marriage, or equal rights, is a given. Or at least should be. the point of my example was to show that some things are to precious, or obvious, to be put to the vote. Should we have a nation wide vote on the right to freedom of speech?? No, because it would be a waste of time and money, and the principle is to important; what if there Was a poor turnout, or uneducated / biased voters chose poorly? I agree with the outcome, but not the method. To me, the fact it went to a vote, sounds like a compromised choice, done out of political limitations, or a minority of politicians in goverment who agree with this outcome, but are not numbered enough to push it through on there own.
@End_of_Lvl_Guardian
@End_of_Lvl_Guardian 9 жыл бұрын

@nautilusshell4969
@nautilusshell4969 3 жыл бұрын
Because under Irish law, until 2015, marriage was understood to be between a man and a woman. If the government had simply legislated to change the law, then the legislation would have been open to challenge in the Supreme Court of the Republic of Ireland. Therefore, a constitutional amendment was required.
