Marina Diamandis, formerly known by her stage name Marina & The Diamonds, has topped the charts with music that blends powerful pop with an indie sound. Her songs have tackled female stereotypes, rape culture and the frivolity of fame - but the last album was in 2015. Marina took three years off and went to study psychology and attachment theory. Now back with a new album, she talks to Krishnan about her return to music, how political events have influenced her writing and how the media should change the way they treat women.

Marina is definitely not alone with that 'I don't feel British' mentally. A lot of Americans (including me) feel that way about the US as well for a lot of the same reasons that she mentioned in this video. It's hard to feel like your a part of a nation where you disagree with a lot of the ways things are done.
@kitsch_bitch

@@kitsch_bitch I 100% agree, but at the same time it's feels good to feel proud to be a part of the country your living in and care about so much. So when you don't feel proud you often times feel frustrated that you don't feel good about the nation you feel like an outcast in a sea of poorly led citizens and the feeling sucks. Humans naturally gather together due to beliefs among other things, it's only normal. To want to belong (even just a tiny bit). Mammals in the wild usually congregate together under one or two leaders and fall into hierarchies so while nations are man-made the instinct to gather under a ruler that can protect you and the group are ancient (and not necessarily needed anymore). Marina says she talks about unity and the lack thereof a lot in this album one of those things she wants unified is definitely the countries she loves. Watching or realizing that your country falling apart is like watching your parents get divorced or living in a dysfunctional family.

finally someone says it. When i was saying that in school etc. in Poland where i come from, i was called ‘anti-polish’, ‘ridiculous’, ‘immature’, ‘trying to be cool’ which to this day pisses me off. I don’t understand why it is so incredibly important to people that they are willing to fight for it (fighting for your freedom is a different thing) or dismiss everything that’s different

Crying at 21:00 about racism, msyogny and antihumanism. I have to admit, that during quarantine I have been finally learning so much and reflecting myself. Her mentioning the allowance of herself to stop and feel relieved of the pressure of her work (which I am currently experiencing), and being a “slow” thinker (I relate again) makes me feel so lucky to have found this interview exactly now. I hadn’t even heard of Brexit. Embarrassing. Next for today is listening to “How to analyze people on sight” by elsie and ralph benedict. It’s an audiobook that was recommended to me from a loved one. After hearing that Marina was positively affected by studying psychology, I am looking forward to it.

I love these long form interviews. There is not a lot of this in the States. Fresh Air with Terry Gross is one such show, and I would LOVE to hear Marina give an interview on that show. I love the thoughtful commentary in Marina's lyrics, even in her old stuff, she'd slip lines and thoughts in there, which is lovely. (Yes, I clearly am someone who has just discovered her)
