I actually saw this gem in the theater in San Francisco in 2010. There were five people in a huge 3D cinema, including me. Three people walked out . The two of us who were left looked at each other from across the theater and hunkered down to weather the rest of it. We definitely won medals of valor that day.

I think part of the problem is that it's not attempting to be provocative or offensive, it just is. Like it's not attempting to challenge or shock you, it just does without being at all aware of what it's doing. It uses imagery with no awareness of what that imagery means or what it's conveying. There are plenty of bad movies that attempt to shock and you go 'that was tasteless' but this is a situation where there was no intended taste; they put things together with no clear direction or grasp of how it would be viewed or understood and the result is just sickening in that 'how could anyone be this inept' sort of way. If something like Freddy Got Fingered is one side of the scale with someone intending to make something awful, this has to be the opposite, where it's absolutely dreadful without having any awareness that it will be so.

Also something I learned from film brain’s review: the nazis didn’t come into power until a few years after this movie’s setting, so the girl basically had a bizarre premonition. Matthew buck also talks about the DVD documentary on the making of this film, the amount of money poured into it, sponsored and funded by a Swedish bank, the cast was very unsure of production saying “it was definitely different” to put it lightly, it was a massive box office failure only making 16 million dollars compared to the amount of money it took to produce, also the inclusion of nazis is explained as part of the director’s tragic backstory which some reason was “A” okay to put in a film for kids. Someone approved of this?

I'm not sure freddy got fingered could be considered on the grounds that it technically succeeded. In a way, that fact alone honestly disqualifies it in my opinion. It's truly horrifically awful. But seeing how that was the point, it doesn't feel like it fits with other films that are made and fail technically, or don't even bother trying.

Even the Barbie and Tom & Jerry versions of Nutcracker were better than this shit! I was both laughing and feeling horrified all at once. I bet Elle Fanning (Mary) has looked back on this once or twice and thought "Dear God, what was I thinking?" and does her utmost best to NEVER bring this up when discussing her career beginnings, bc last thing she wants is people remember she, and several other well-known actors, were in this shit-fest of a movie. XD 6:11 Yeah and if this was what introduced Tchaikovsky to the concept of movies...*whistles lowly* Boy, would this be a TERRIBLE representation.

I watched the actual Nutcracker on Netflix, and I started questioning why I even liked it in the first place. It's such a weird ballet. You stab multi-headed rat, see a lady with children under her skirt, and all of this happened because of your weird Godfather.

He must've needed the money. That's the only reason he had to have said "Yes" to the horseshit garbage dumpster fire of a movie. Much like John Malkovich with Transformers 3 and Lonah Hex. He must've had some gambling debts

11:24 "Why do they had to take it into dark places?" Well, it's 21th Century Russia, the greatest holiday (after New Year) is the 9th May, Victory day... And everything has to be about the victory over Nazis, even poor Nutcracker, may Ernst Hoffman rest in peace.
@matthewmccann45114 жыл бұрын
Can you imagine actually watching this movie in 3D. It would be terrifying!!
@TheMitman106 жыл бұрын
I will say this in favour of the film, the Nazi symbolism ALMOST and I mean ALMOST could work. That being said, using it in the context of The fucking Nutcracker isn’t wise given the lighthearted subject matter of the original story but I guess if done correctly it could still be done. The problem is that they don’t give the story a darker tone. They throw in musical numbers, the original pieces of music, fun jokes and happy toys which doesn’t work with dark symbolism such as the holocaust. Plus, like Doug said, even the lighthearted moments aren’t done correctly so it doesn’t compliment the dark parts therefore none of this Nazi symbolism really works. If you can’t do it right then don’t do it at all.
