This might sound really stupid but toonami actually saved my life..my friend came over my house and wanted me to go with him to some girl's house, usually I would say yes but I was like "hell no, DBZ is about to come on"..now this wasn't just any episode of Dragonball z. This was the first time in the US that Goku turned Super Saiyan against Freiza. I waited a long long time for this episode and I was not about to miss it..well he left my house and as he was driving, he made a U turn too quick and got hit by a semi..he survived but was in a coma for weeks but the passenger side where I would have sat was completely caved in..lucky me. Thanks toonami

Talks about Sailor Moon without mentioning monster of the week. Calls DBZ monster of the week right after. With the fillers, it felt a little monster of the week sometimes, but even then, it was never one week. Even Garlic Junior took up a fair share of time.
@schribbler15925 жыл бұрын
Yeah I cringed at that. She apparently hasn't seen DBZ in a long time. Kinda shocked no one corrected her. Dragon Ball hasn't resembled anything close to monster of the week since the beginning of Dragon Ball, then it quickly switched to Pilaf as an overarching villain, and kept some of the characters that would have been considered'a monster of the week. If anything GT would fit that formula a bit better in the beginning, but a person would still be stretching to call it a 'Monster of the Week' type show.

Toonami was for me as a teenager what Saturday morning cartoons were for me as a kid.I think with the previous generations before mine there wasn’t much in the way of good cartoon programming aimed pre teens and teens, which is why even Doug’s generation typically stopped watching cartoons and only came back later because of nostalgia or because they started watching it with their kids. While a lot of people I grew up with never stopped because there was enough quality and mature content that we didn’t merely think of cartoons as “kid’s stuff” and grow out of it.

Nostalgia Critic should have a look back on Adult Swim shows. Now granted, it might not seem like nostalgia due to it being programming meant for late teens/adults but for many kids Adult swim was almost like a forbidden fruit to us.... One Friday night when your parents finally let you stay past 9pm, you just got done watching (insert cartoon here), you then see the screen cut to black, The adult swim warning pops up and you check the guide or flip a channel to see if you’re even still on Cartoon Network. You might heed the warning the first time and switch to Disney Channel or Nick at Night, but eventually you become interested and the next time it happens you ignore the warning. You are then met with bizarre channel bumpers and from the “no children in the pool” announcement, you feel a mix of anxiousness and fear as if you don’t belong there but at the same time you are excited. You felt almost wrong for watching it or if your parents walked in you’d get grounded on the spot. For a lot of us it was a TV puberty, and a turning point realizing that cartoons didn’t have to only be for kids. Some of us probably only started off with the syndicated fox shows and turned it off whenever there was an adult swim original show, while the badasses of our age group stayed up to watch robot chicken. It was part of growing up and it felt like an adventure, and I just spent 30 min trying to detail how it felt like watching adult swim as a child on the Nostalgia critic KZbin comment section no wonder Why I can’t find a girlfriend.

Tartakovsky's Grievous was so awesome. An unknown specter of death who absolutely HATES the Jedi and terrifies even Masters at the mere sound of his footsteps. A warrior who has a counter for nearly every Jedi power and trick without access to the Force himself. Yet even then it's clear he's not some OP insert as it's shown part of his effectiveness is from his fear and reputation since Count Dooku can easily hold the killer cyborg off. And on that, YES! An actual nearly full conversion cyborg in a world where you have the technology to build robots that can think but rarely ever see any significant cybernetics beyond limb replacement on a few characters. Grievous can scale walls, survive in space, move around as easily on one leg or his hands as on both feet, throw people hard enough to bend durasteel and far enough to clear multiple ceilings, outrun blaster fire, wield weapons with his feet, and that is just what I can recall off the top of my head. Egad, this guy was like the precursor to Darth Vader, who is arguably for me the only villain that tops him in sheer reputation and deadliness. (Vader's Rogue One scenes are arguably the best parts in a movie I already loved) And then the CGI series happened... Damn Qymaen jai Sheelal, what happened to you?

Definitely Adult Swim. Late Saturday nights/very early Sunday mornings were AS's primary spot for anime at that point and these were some of its staples - Inuyasha in particular having a permanent two-episode slot at the tail end of the segment while other series would come and go. Over the years it also notably aired Big O, Samurai Champloo, Paranoia Agent, Eureka Seven, Scryed, and at least two Ghost in the Shell series.

Don't forget, Kishimoto also was inspired by Yu Yu Hakusho. Kurama the demon fox's name was named after Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho. It also has some of the best voice acting and script writing, giving the characters a more distinct personality that made them unique compared to their Japanese counterparts while doing a decent job translating concepts that would be hard to explain in English like the word game Kurama has to play. It is one show I tell people to watch in English. And it's fun watching the animation through the series getting better during its run as it originally aired in 1992 in Japan. And I enjoyed Jackie Chan Adventures. It was stupid, but a decent waste of time.

While the initial funimation dub did have its own level of censorship that wouldnt be cleaned up till remasters and dbz kai, they were much lighter than ocean's censorship. Also a big reason for ocean dub's heavy censorship was that it was airing in canada which had even harsher restrictions than USA in the 90s. As an example the censorship was so bad in canada they had to rename the show Beast Wars Transformers to Beasties Transformers to remove the war reference.
