One of the main problems I had with this movie is that, in the original Kevin had many siblings and cousins as the McCallisters are a big family. This compounded by the fact that the neighbor's kid came by and they mistaken him for Kevin during headcount as the family were rushing to get to the airport in the morning, made it believable that they could easily have forgotten about him until they reached the airport of their vacation. However in this movie Max is an only child. For his mum to not notice his absence was complete negligence of her as a parent. Also Max being "home alone" doesn't have the same effect as Kevin who having to grow up with many siblings meant he was never home alone before. Hence getting the house to himself for the holidays made the whole experience very unique and zany.
@DuneStone6816 Жыл бұрын
Not entirely accurate. Max has one older sister. And it wasn’t exactly his mom who left him behind. His parents left ahead of most of the family. It was a few aunts and uncles who forgot Max. Perhaps the fact that these things weren’t clear goes to show how poorly the characters are established.

Hell, even the villains they are willing to make into horrible monsters, they give a backstory to so as to make them sympathetic. Sure, villains don't need to be one note, but making them sympathetic makes the hero less heroic.
@angrynoodletwentyfive6463 Жыл бұрын
This isn't really a movie that is targeted towards little kids so the idea that they are doing something to try to avoid scaring an audience they aren't really going for in this case is a bit dumb. Honestly i think the reason Disney has stopped doing actual villains has more to do with adults than children, People tend to be very very vocally critical of a Disney movies' "villain" more so than almost any other aspect. I think it is just easier for them to try to write a movie without a villain or where the villain isn't actually a villain than to risk creating a villain audiences don't like. because if they create a villain audiences don't like that is the only aspect of the movie people are going to be talking about, and even if some audiences like the villain their is always going to be somebody else that doesn't. I mean in this case you kinda need a villain but in the other cases they are high risk low reward with the way audiences have been reacting t villains lately where the standards for a "good villain" are just set to rediculous level.

What's the point? I'm a firm believer that you don't remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone. You're not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It's just not going to happen. So why do it? It's like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film - a live-action version of that. What's the point? It's been done. Do your own thing. @harrisonho8934 Жыл бұрын
I've said this numerous times before and I'll say it again, the big problem in this movie for me, personally, is the fact that they made the "bandits", Pam and Jeff, more sympathetic and relatable than the "protagonist", Max, that you end up rooting for THEM instead of him. Unlike the villains from the other movies, Pam and Jeff were just trying to get a doll, which was THEIRS to begin with, in order to sell it just so that their kids can have a place to live. As a result of this, when I see them get tortured by the traps, I can't find it funny. It's like with Plankton in One Coarse Meal. Mr. Krabs torturing Plankton is unfunny, as he DOES IT EVEN WHEN PLANKTON STOPS STEALING THE FORMULA. The fact is, watching a character get tortured is unfunny if they didn't completely deserve it. At least in the previous films the bandits/terrorists were clearly trying to steal valuables that weren't theirs, but this film attempts to make the bandits sympathetic in a half-assed attempt to make some sort of "it's all about family" message, which it fails to do...

I've seen _all_ of the Home Alone movies, and 3 is definitely not the worst. I like how 3 changed up the formula but still found a plausible way to deliver on the main premise. I think 4 is the worst. It uses characters from the first 2 films, with _none_ of the original actors, which should tell you everything you need to know about it.

One way they could've fixed things was to have the parents the come second time to just ask the kid for the doll and come across actual burglars. Then have the kid go against the burglars thinking it's the parents coming for round 2 possibly having them play a similar role to the old man in the first movie at the end

This feels a lot like the live-action Disney remakes. Like, effort is clearly there, but they're so creatively caged by having to recapture the magic of a classic. Besides that, the biggest thing they _did_ do different from the original was making the home invaders sympathetic! What a bizarre thing to change!

Max’s sadistic treatment of the McKenzie family makes sense when you consider the situation from his point of view. We, the audience, are aware that the thieves aren't there for Max, but he doesn’t know that. He only hears them say that they want to take "him" and sell "him" (the doll) to some old lady, and he thinks that they’re talking about him, not the doll. From Max’s point of view, he sees the McKenzies as child kidnappers who deserve whatever he does to them.

Home Sweet Home Alone is probably the sequel I easily hate the most, out of the entire franchise. Btw I actually unironically like Home Alone 3, I think it’s underrated, and in my opinion is on par with the first two. Anyways Home Sweet Home Alone is probably one of the few times a movie sequel in recent years has made me so genuinely angry in a long time. And as massive fan of the first two Homes Alone movies I believe this movie does a massive disservice to the originals and being an overall good movie One of the main issues I have with this movie is that it just feels way too much like too much of a copy of the first movie, it copies and rehashes way too much of the first movie, to the point of seeming a little desperate to be the first movie again, from its set up, its character, it’s setting, and the music. And even though the sequels kinda do the same thing I thought that were at least different enough with the way they set things up. and this movie even rehashes Home Alone 3, with the booby trapped trampoline and the bandits in a frozen pool. The kid in this movie is just a shallow copy of Kevin from the first two movies, but with non of the charm or likability of Kevin from the original. The first movie gives us a more understandable reasoning for why Kevin acts the way he does, since he comes from a large family who don’t respect and all act like complete jerks to him, I mean of course he’s gonna act like a rebellious jerk if you’re gonna give him any respect. But in this movie we don’t know anything about who this kid’s family is, or why the kid acts the way he does, or why we should give a shit about this main character. And when it comes being a violent sociopath, yes Kevin is a violent sociopath to the villains but in way kinda it does actually add a lot more charm to his overall character when fighting the bad guys, because he’s just a schemy rebellious little kid trying to do whatever he can to save the day, and the movie takes place in a flexible cartoon reality that you can suspend your disbelief and be entertained by the slapstick, and a lot kids around a certain age where they generally tend to like being a little naughty and mean towards other people, especially when it’s towards bad guys who we know are actually dangerous threat towards the main character, as it’s essentially like every little child’s dream deep down to be like Kevin outsmarting a bunch of dumb grown up bad guys, as these movies are essentially just child wishfulfilment. While the kid in this movie has no charm or likeability when it comes to being violent sociopath, because we know the bandits are not bad guys, and because of that we’re just watching him torturing his aunt and uncle who are completely innocent and doing nothing wrong, and he ends up coming across as more as an unlikable monster, and the actual villain of the movie, rather the than a protagonist that were supposed to root for But the thing that really kills it all for me is the slapstick surrounding the “bad guys” of this movie. I just don’t think you can do a Home Alone story we’re the bandits are sympathetic misunderstood good guys. Because I feel making them sympathetic kinda completely ruins the comedy we love from these movies in the first place surrounding the hard core slapstick and it just doesn’t really work the same as it did the wet bandits! Because you feel sorry for these people knowing they’re just trying help their financially struggling family by needing to get a back a toy that they own, with the pain and suffering they endure coming off as more horribly mean spirited than funny to me with how undeserving their torture is. The slapstick with the wet bandits was funny because they were bad guys with clearly defined selfish motivations, and seeing them get hurt is hilarious because of just how despicable they are, as their pretty much just punishing themselves when walking into the booby due to being motivated by their own selfish desires, as it is what continually making them suffer more and more. And Kevin was an underdog when fending himself off against the villains as we knew who the bandits were and what they’re cruel intentions were, and him setting up all those traps was him trying and struggle to survive, against the bandits wrath, while also having little bit of fun in the process. These bandits are innocent people interacting with the kid who’s there nephew, and their telling him “we’re not gonna hurt you” or “we just wanna talk to you” I really do question whether or not I’m still supposed to take their pain and suffering as a joke or if I’m supposed to take it seriously with them trying to reason with their nephew. Just because something is different from something you’ve seen done many times, doesn’t immediately make it good, as the slapstick in this movie is essentially like watching a kid torture and mutilate a bunch of defenseless dogs, it’s something that just hurts your soul more than it does make you laugh. This also just reeks of Disney trying very desperately hard to put a twist on every iconic villain they could find, especially in making changes in specific stories where the changes don’t belong, I mean there are a lot of stories where sympathetic villains add a lot to the quality of the story, but then there are some that are a complete detriment to the story, there’s a specific reason why the bandits in the original were designed to be bad guys with no redeeming qualities, because as soon as you start give them sympathetic traits, you wind up ruining the whole point of why people like the comedy of these movies in the first place Look I get it you wanna make a deconstruction of Home Alone and it nonsensical bull crap that’s fine, but this movie doesn’t do anything all that particularly creative or smart with what it wants to try and deconstruct, and instead mostly resorts to lazily copying and rehashing the first movie, with it’s premise, it’s setting, and it’s setup, but with just the bandits being good guys, and does very little else with it’s whole subversive concept outside of that, as it still seems insistent on wanting to be a traditional Home Alone, and instead it actually ends up making its own premise itself even stupider more nonsensical than the movies they were trying to deconstruct, with just the added minus of not being funny. The bandits being good guys, isn’t really a bad idea. A better idea is actually going all the way and actually having the bandits be the protagonists who were supposed to root for and have the kid be the antagonist were supposed to root against, as them being brutally tortured and us sympathizing with their pain and suffering allows for us the audience to root for them as the underdogs trying to succeed against the kid, and have it all by design, or if you wanna make a mean spirited movie brutally deconstructing all the bullshit surrounding the Home Alone formula then why not do something like a horror movie or a psychological drama, showing more the grimy realism of the booby actually dangerous, deadly the repercussions surrounding them really are, and having your sympathy for the bandits pain and be done for more dramatic effect, rather than this movie still insisting that it’s supposed to be funny. Now with all these negatives out of the way let’s talk about some of the few things I actually do like in this movie and there’s quite a bit of it. I’ll admit the movie prior to the 3rd act isn’t really all that bad, it’s mostly a mediocre rehash of the first movie, but it is admittedly pretty funny in certain areas, and the main couple I’ll admit are actually quite likeable, charming, and even kinda funny together, which is why I despise the slapstick. I also really like how this movie looks. I like the reoccurring easter egg of Kevin having his own home security system. But I think my favorite thing in this entire movie is the cameo with Buzz as a police officer. Although I’ll admit seeing this just makes me much rather have a legacy Home Alone sequel where we get to see what Kevin as an adult is up to So yeah overall, this movie really f***ing sucks ass. It might not objectively be the worst movie ever, but it’s been a while since a movie has made me this enraged, and as a big fan of the Home Alone, it does a lot of things really frustrates and pisses me off beyond all belief. Yeah. I think I’m just gonna skip with this one and just continue to stick with the original 2 movies including 3

In an original draft of the script, the movie started out with an ad for the McCallister Home Security System, starring Kevin himself. The commercial would then reveal that he has a wife, a 5-year-old daughter and still lives in his childhood home. This would have been Macaulay Culkin's rumored cameo in the film if he had accepted Disney's $2.5 million offer.
