The entire thing is explained by “from Japan”. It feels like the Japanese were trying to pay homage to American animation (especially with the roadrunner sequence), but of course little anime-isms slipped in, and some things were lost in translation/culture. The paper people are shikigami I assume, kind of like the paper that chases Haku around in Spirited away. I don’t know the full lore, but they have to do with spirits and possession.
@MrKlausbaudelaire
@MrKlausbaudelaire 4 жыл бұрын
Marie Frazier there is also the way japan portrays magic. They are not fond of the “snap your fingers and things happen” but ritualistic magic with tools and illusions, hence everything Hecuba did required something. Like a soup to put jack to sleep, a smelly balm to hipnotize Margaret, shikigamis to make a fake wedding, even in the end when confronting jack it felt like she wanted to trap him in another illusion.
@IkeFoxbrush

This one is still NOTHING compared to one even more disturbing animated Japanese movie I watched when I was a kid. One SO forgotten there's no official English title or translation, I watched it in Italy. I THINK the Italian title would translate to "When the Dinosaurs lived". The movie basically goes like this; 2 teenagers and an annoying kid are taken back in time by some God-like entity, I can't remember exactly why it called out to them and made them do that, and they try to survive in the Dinosaur age. They are relentlessly hunted down by a Godzilla sounding T-rex who CONSTANTLY kills something on-screen (yeah, there's legit LOTS of blood here), and then at some point they reach a neanderthal village where they take part in some ritualistic sacrifice to a God the village worships, it turns out to be the T-rex, and then the whole village kills the t-rex by throwing endless spears at it. I don't think I can describe how gruesome the scene was, and how unbelievably chaotic it felt with loud music and random strange imagery. Almost made me feel bad about the t-rex, because then wounded to the brink of near death, the t-rex walks a LONG distance to the beach bleeding like a Russian princess and collapses in the water.

I'm sure like 1000 other weeaboos have already mentioned this, but just to make sure you catch it: The "Are you happy" scene makes sense when viewed with the lens of Japanese lore. The paper people are based off of Onmyodo, or a type of Japanese mysticism. Supposedly in lore, the paper dolls can be used to take the appearance or place of a human in the mind of the victim. The Victim under the spell will see the vaguely human shape of the paper doll and assume it is human. This can likewise be used to trick spirits. Taking that fact into consideration, it becomes fairly obvious that the wavy texture of the voice, the eccentric nature of the people involved, and the song, seem to indicate that the Witch is using magic on the girl, and the trippy visuals are meant to represent that. The high inflection on the speech though, I can only venture a guess, but I'm willing to bet that the original Japanese voice had that same inflection, as it's common "weirdo" speech pattern. It was probably the English cast taking that into account for whatever reason. That being said, if I had seen this as a child and not a giant man-child weeb, I probably would have thought I was on acid.

Hecuba is my favourite. Don't know why, she just was the ultimate creepy witch from when I was a kid. Any woman I saw in real life or on the screen who was tall and thin, dressed in black and seeming to glide was dubbed Hecuba. Especially if she had an impossibly large son, who naturally got named Tulip. Ah! Pity you didn't talk about Hecuba's second musical number though! Her joyful ditty when distributing her paper guests in the chapel.

10:37 I can explain it, Those paper things are the same kind of paper dolls in Spirited Away, They are Shikigami, they are basically spirit energy bound to paper to complete a simple task, in this case, to simulate a wedding. But they have no soul, no mind, no thoughts, just paper animated by magic so they can imitate people, but only in the way a person that doesn't understand Russian can imitate speaking it, maybe he can pronounce the words but its missing all the subtlety and life to it. I would feel strange and disjointed, like everything they do is in the uncanny valley. To sum up everything, the witch is using magic to make paper dolls come to life to perform the wedding, probably for her son more then anything else.
@42Caio
@42Caio 7 жыл бұрын
Even without knowledge of what a shikigami is there shouldn't be anything too confusing about the witch staging a wedding with fake people and priest. I want to believe Doug is just overplaying his confusion for comedy sake, but seeing out-of-character reviews he does sometimes where he seems absolutely confused by everything that's not explained through exposition (and sometimes, confused by shit that was explained and he didn't pay attention) I'm starting to think he really has trouble following anything.
@silentfcknhill

Yes, I agree. And I feel like it is also the explanation for why her remains are mechanical when the giant steps on her. She was an evil witch spirit, inhabiting the body of one of the mechanical toys, using an illusion to make it seem as though she was real in that form, but due to what you described, she could not help but seem creepy and unnaturally uncanny valley. It was all about the perception of the characters, rather than how things actually were, until the spell was broken and her evil essence came out in the form of black smoke. The real twist is that we actually think it is only the princess who has been misguided by an illusion, because we follow the main character's view of things.

The princess having "I just joined a cult" eyes makes sense as she is being enchanted with a warped perception of reality. The papermen can be inferred to be magic puppets used because the illusion needs some vaguely humanoid figure to disguise as something else. I'm shit out of guesses for everything else thought.

It's obscured here in the US just like this anime movie NC talked about. Seriously it only came to the US edited together into a movie released on VHS and I had no idea of it until I found a copy at my local library which I now own since I liked the movie so much they were nice enough to give it to me when they had to eliminate (and basically sell) all of their vhs catalog due to limited interest. As a result it's very hard to find a copy of this that's not at an incredible high price online. Also Netflix had the CGI version of the anime (which was toe to toe just the original anime in cgi form) that bombed horribly and got such a low star rating it was removed from the site. Maybe if I'm lucky Amazon Prime will get it like they have with the Swiss Family Robinson anime.

The song “Are You Happy?” is truly excellent. The whole story of Jack and the Beanstalk is weird. It’s commonly watered down in a lot of adaptations. But it’s a weird story. The Japanese animators perceived the weirdness that was already there, and complemented it. The song “Are You Happy?” is just part of that. Princess Margaret ironically answers the song “Are You Happy?” with her bittersweet song “No One’s Happier Than I.”
