It will also ruin shadows story. Where did Maria come from and all the others working at the ark? And same goes with GUN like you said. How did they create a mobian.? It was theorised that biolizard was made to resemble chaos to make as the ultimate pife form. But it was unstable, so they made shadow based off the murals that show a prophesy about a hedgehog that's really fast and can use chaos control and go super and even copied super sonics hair style. The humans have been to sonics world or maybe lived there which will easily explain eggman who is living there. In sonic X, it was never exolaind how wasbit that eggman was actually born on earth and not in sonics world. Like how he got there? Sure there is the sonic movie but that's a completely different story and cannon. So if they are to say explain how the people of the ARK discovered the prophecy in sonics world to then create shadow, baby sonic could have dropped a ring that then sent some people to sonics world (though it wont makes sense because it only works if you think if the place).

Yeah having a game full of nothing but other animals like sonic... uhhh... idk I don’t think I’d like that very much. It just feels weird to me some how. It’d be like watching a game full of OCs from the internet or something(not necessarily a bad thing visual-design-wise, but it just seems like everyone in the sonic universe becomes special/strong/powerful in some way at that point) Plus the whole reason sonic and his friends can save the day is because they have abilities(related to the animals they are/character design) that are different from what the humans have The only time the humans are of any threat in the games is when robots/guns/mechanical stuff is being used/controlled by them.... by that same logic, the only thing that would really make them useful in saving the day/world is that same stuff But sonic and his friends offer different ways to fight/save the day because they have abilities that are unique to them as animals and stuff If the whole world is full of other animals then doesn’t that mean that they all have abilities unique to the type of animal they are/character designs as well?? Literally every animal I can think of in sonic shows/games at the moment, has had some sort of power/ability If they’re in a world full of other animals with their own powers, then what really makes sonic and his friends so special?? What makes them different than the rest other than being the ones who feel they need to save the day or being the only ones with the courage to stand up and save the day But if you got a world full of animals, each will likely to have their own special abilities already, then why would a majority of them feel that they couldn’t fight back?? It’s not like anybody is being talked about being robotized anymore in games(to my knowledge) so what’s there for them to be afraid of?? I think anyone could understand why humans would be scared to stand up or fight back. I mean, they’re basically useless and very fragile without any weaponry or mechanical inventions If one hedgehog could damage/make explode/dent a robot machine(MADE OF METAL) just with one bounce off the head, then I think it’s safe to say that humans are basically as good as dead if they were to ever piss off sonic and his friends lol With humans, it makes sense why sonic would be the one fighting and saving the day and makes sense why the humans would be cowering in fear or afraid to fight back even if they know that what’s happening in the world isn’t right It also makes sense why Eggman and other villains would target Earth/Humans as hostages or people/a planet that’s easy to over throw If your a villain prone to failing(like Robotnik) or a villain who just wants to exact your plan quickly, then humans and Earth is the easiest and weakest target because it’s full of recourses, technology, land, water, and most importantly, it’s full of fragile life forms that wouldn’t stand a chance against you without their technology which you can easily take away, leaving them defenseless in the process It makes it seem like sonic is standing up for those who are too weak to defend themselves With tons of other super animals inhabiting the world... idk.. it just doesn’t make sense why they wouldn’t rise up or fight back and it doesn’t really make sense why sonic and his friends could do a better job at it than any of them can, when the only thing that differentiates the two is the ‘power of friendship’ and Sonics ability to use the chaos emeralds to go super You’re telling me that in a world full of animals no one else has friends?? Or friends that would want to help them save themselves/loved ones?? No one else uses/invents technology like tails?? Tails is the only genius/smart/handy animal in the world?? Idk... humans just seem to make more sense to me and keeps the focus more on sonic and his friends rather than having me wonder what some background characters abilities might be and wondering why they’re aren’t ever seen lifting a finger or aren’t a playable character if they look really cool

Having a world where both humans and anthro animals inhabit it makes more sense as opposed to the two worlds bs they've been pushing for the past 10 years. The Sonic Archie reboot depicts this idea pretty well and is how I want Sonic's world to be portrayed going forward. I can't say anything without going crazy why people say eggman should be the only human AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
@TheFrostedfirefly3 жыл бұрын
I've said this before but honestly I think humans need to be styled closer to an anime look that closely resembles the famous Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Brand New Animal, etc) art style. I specify Studio Trigger because unlike most anime, Studio Trigger REALLY diversifies the body types of their character designs and for that reason it's really easy to see certain designs right next to both Sonic AND Eggman. Sonic Unleashed I'll admit from an objective standpoint really did try its best out of all the games to make humans fit next to Sonic but unfortunately I'm both a 3D and art student who sees issue with calling something a "similar style" just because it's both cartoony and in 3D. What I'm essentially saying is that while it's probably the closest we've had, the "Pixar" art style they went for is not the ideal style that should be how they are for the rest of their inclusion. It's easy to say "Sonic's a cartoon hedgehog so a cartoony 3D style will work" but it's not that easy because Sonic isn't that style at all. Something that's easy to ignore because Sonic isn't a human meaning you can ignore those "differences" but that being said, Eggman then becomes the next important example you MUST compare the humans to and at that point, Eggman does not sit well next to those humans AT ALL and it's easy to see he's a completely different art style. While we're on the subject, I'm going to take this chance to also criticise even the anthropomorphic character designs too but only in the aspect of diversity. Sonic Forces seems to have cemented something else too if not that it's "only animal characters" that live in the world but also (perhaps due to avatar customisation limitations) that ALL of these characters have the same Sonic template body type. Thankfully Vector is still in the game as a good example of body type but to miss this opportunity of sharing these unique types of inhabitants is a pretty big screw up imo. The IDW comics actually did great to introduce Ruff and Tumble in the universe who both blend in perfectly with the other characters while breaking away from the template body type that everyone loves to use. I want to make my own video on this subject one day (probably on under a different name since this is an old one I've had since school) but final thoughts are this: Both humans AND anthropomorphic characters belong in the Sonic universe and both need to be carefully designed to fit next to both Sonic AND Eggman as stated earlier. Either coexisting together in towns OR if not, at least show that there are animal civilisations AND human civilisations even if they aren't located in the same place. As my best possible example, I think the style and designs should be done by the Brand New Animal (Studio Trigger) artist as they demonstrate in the show itself that their skill for diverse body types and designs are exceptional. I know someone is going to take my example literally, it's an example. It's similar to voice acting. Someone gives you a reel of lines that they can do and you don't choose which of those lines you want, you use them as a base to see if they could provide the closest product to the vision you have so that isn't to assume that I'm literally saying "Sonic should look like Brand New Animal", hopefully that clears any possible misunderstanding. TLDR; Yes to humans and anthros living together. Art style = Just prioritise them looking good next to Eggman instead of just Sonic and the rest will fit into place.
@TheFrostedfirefly3 жыл бұрын
Something else I want to say that's related is that Sonic's world to me is not a realistic one. Neither is it a cartoon-y abstract one. Sonic's world is something in between where it has extremely strong fantasy and sci-fi elements that likes to focus on the positives of nature, the negatives of machinery and the BENEFITS of nature working WITH machinery. With that being said, I think both the Adventure games AND Unleashed had the strongest vision of this when it came to acknowledging the existence of Humans other than Eggman. For the Adventure games, I think they didn't lean hard enough into that fantasy element save for a couple of stages where the giant trees and floating islands were present. Unleashed definitely had more creative environments but again I feel they shouldn't have went 100% with representing ONLY real places, even if they did put a fictional spin on them. A couple of places related to Sonic's Universe would have helped, I think.

The whole game they are trying to cover up their mis deeds from 50 years ago, trying to wrongfully arrest Sonic. And possibly giving Rouge permission to help blow up prison island with a lot of G.U.N. personnel on the island. I too would like to see humans return. I am positive about human characters. They ground the existance of the giant talking egg in logic and if it wasn't for human characters, Shadow's storyline would be really boring. Particularly Maria and Gerald. I don't think Shadow the hedgehog should be an example of human characters being bad, because the point of the gun commander is that he is just utterly crippingly wrong due to him being stuck mentally as a vengeful prick.(also, the writing of he game is better in japanese.) In expertmode, he apologises to shadow and invites him over. And the president(the other important human character in the game) is actually really cool, it actually kinda sucks that the man never appeared again. He had very little screentime overall.

I think humans have always had a background presence in the series Aside from Eggman and Madonna, just *looking* at places like South Island's Spring Yard Zone and Star Light Zone, you can tell there's some form of civilization inhabiting these areas, Spring Yard and Star Light are very obviously set in cities, and frankly Spring Yard always gave me a Central Park vibe. Moving onto Sonic 2's West Side Island, there's Casino Night Zone. Maybe these islands don't have a human presence, maybe they do. But no one can tell me no "two worlds" bs cause Angel Island doesn't just float through space okay? And I sure as hell know Sonic ain't no astronaut either. South Island even appears on SA2's world map. Prison Island is directly stated to be "an island in the south." Honestly I always really loved the shadow the hedgehog game. I think considering the plot of the game, where the humans fight the aliens, it's good that we see them as ennemies in the stages. This makes it clear there is a war going on since we see them fighting against the black arms. A cool thing we see in this game is how human technology has advanced. What is considered a boss in sa2 (big foot mech) is now a pretty common ennemy in stages. Another example is the big dog mech, in sa2 it could hover above ground but now it can fly out into space.

I never really questioned humans being in Sonic's world because well egg man has to come from somewhere but also because Sonic takes things pretty liberally from the Dragon Ball universe and in the Dragon Ball Universe you have beastmen and humans alongside one another the king of the world in the Dragon Ball version of Earth is a anthropomorphic dog and no one questions it. Why should we questioned human being in Sonic's world? Also the Two Worlds Theory I don't think works very well given that many of the plot points from the franchise exist in a human and anthro populated world like the story of Adventure to is pretty damn important to not only the echidnas but also the humans with The Arc Gerald Robotnik Maria and Shadow Adventure one has the civilization of the ancient Knuckles Clan and there civilization being rediscovered by human archaeologists. I think one of the biggest problems with humans in Sonic games is that aside from our Core Sonic character cast there are no more anthro characters so it just kind of looks like there's the small handful of cartoony anthropomorphic animals in a world populated otherwise by humans so that's kind of why they look very out of place because there's none of their own kind just walking around we should see Fox people Hedgehog people bat people rabbit people etc walking around alongside human NPC characters to really give that a fact that yeah this is a world where anthropomorphic animals and humans just happen to coexist.
@LiveHedgehog3 жыл бұрын
Yes. They've been in since the beginning. Sonic has always had these 3 types of animals; -Humans -Anthropomorphic animals -normal looking animals. 06's problem is that it tried to go too realistic, without thinking how offputting that would be. I think SA1 and Unleashed have the best aesthetic for including all 3.

Sonic has always had this theme of *Nature vs Technology.* Again and again you see the games present this idea of "living in the now" vs "living forever, being trapped in the past, or fear of the future" and solving that through technological/magical means. The science side of this theme is often (but not always) best represented through humans, hence why Eggman is likely human. For example, Shadow's story wouldn't work without humans. The idea of humans being worthwile to save, to preserve hope and give them a chance is at the heart of Maria's plea and thus at the heart of Shadow's story. If you place anthropomorphised animals in that role, it would become much more divorced from the human condition-- from us.

This is a rare situation where I think a more Japanese Anime/Manga style works better for the human characters. It's just realistic enough to not look weird, but also exaggerated enough in the right ways to feel correct next to Sonic. The large heads, big hairstyles, huge expressive eyes, and larger hands and feet feel correct next to Sonic and friends because it matches their art-style more. As you put it with one of Eggman's designs, it felt like something out of Final Fantasy.

Before watching the whole thing: The trouble with human characters in my opinion is that eggman has always existed and is clearly a human. @thedontpanic4 ай бұрын
I think one problem with 06 is that the human designs don't really reflect how Sonic interacts with them. Think about the relationship Sonic and co have to humans in each game they appear in. In Sonic Adventure, they were kinda just there to fill the world but not do too much, which fits with how simple and blocky they looked. In Sonic Adventure 2, a human organization, GUN, becomes a major part of the narrative and is a direct adversary to the player, even if humans themselves don't directly come into conflict very much, their presence is still felt in the story. So the humans got a bit upgraded in this game. They contrasted Sonic and co just a bit more, where they were recognizably distinct from Sonic in proportions and facial structure, and it worked for the purposes of the game, as Sonic and co are portrayed as characters clearly defined outside of the yoke of humanity, acting freely for the most part. Then, in Shadow the Hedgehog, we see humans at their most adversarial. Shadow can actively attack people as a part of missions given to you by the game, and the story is very much about Shadow's relationship with humanity, and the conflict that arises from it. The style for humans is preserved and given extra detail and life from what SA2 did, since we are carrying on Shadow's story that began in SA2 where humans were already put into conflict with animal characters. We see humans as people capable of good and bad, just like Shadow is. After that, Sonic 06 came along and sort of forgot about all that. People are just... people in Sonic 06 and while they populate the game world, they mainly act as general NPCs like in SA1 or as questgivers. Their role in the story is pretty much limited to Elise and her backstory and plotline. We don't really see humans causing too much conflict apart from the experiments that Elise's backstory covers. Despite this limited and mostly harmless role, the people are even MORE realistic and the least cartoony or anime-ish they've ever been. I think this is fundamentally where Sonic 06 misses the mark on human characters. They're just realism for the sake of realism because it's impressive, as was the big trend back in the 2000s. It wouldn't surprise me if this was actually a thing pushed for by the higher-ups at SEGA rather than an active stylistic choice by the creative team, but that's just my speculation. My point is that the realistic humans in Sonic 06 just aren't meaningful in their contrast to Sonic. Despite this harsh contrast in design philosophy, Sonic is extremely chill with basically all humans and is actively trying to save an important one for like the entire game. Not to say he hated humans before or anything like Shadow was, but Sonic was clearly defined outside of humanity for a reason in a game like SA2. So why bother trying to make them stand out so much when the game isn't trying to draw a massive distinction between Sonic and human beings? One could argue this might fit better with Shadow's story since it still has more to do with humanity, but in that story Shadow himself doesn't reevaluate his relationship with humanity that much despite being pressed by the narrative. It's sort of a foregone conclusion since Shadow the Hedgehog already happened, and Shadow is literally an agent for GUN at the start of the game. Not to say the story isn't good, it's just that Shadow's stance has already been made up on the matter, and I don't think the realistic style for humans does much to illustrate just how unflinching Shadow is in his commitment to fighting for humanity. OK, enough ranting about 06 for one day. Sonic Unleashed, on the other hand, does exactly what I think Sonic 06 failed to do. In Unleashed, humans are largely passive observers to the conflict going on (similar to 06) and are more meant as friendly questgivers and comedic relief. The passive and slightly comedic role is reflected in their style, almost Pixar-esque that complements Sonic without making them too similar. In Unleashed, humans are just people living out their lives on this planet, same as Sonic. They're still distinct from Sonic, but they're not nearly as harsh a contrast as even SA2 humans.

After the generic avatar fill ins we got in Forces, it made me realize how much I missed the humans in Sonic. Sure you have a few outliers like Elise and Chris that get in the way of the story (and even then you could argue that they at least serve a purpose with the former being a key representative for The Solaris Project and the latter serving as an in between for Sonic and Earth interactions) but for the most part, they fit in with the world building and made Sonic’s world a bit more diverse. Personally I’m more of a fan of the anime styled humans vs the Disney/Pixar inspired ones from Unleashed but I hope that they’ll try to incorporate them again, especially since the Sonic movie succeeded despite going the Sonic X route and having him interacting with humans.

It would be kinda interesting to have a version of the Sonic universe where the people on the ark, including Gerald and Maria, were some of the last humans left, and shortly after the remaining humans on the planet died out, leaving Eggman the last human. Like for example, gerald in his last moments releases a deadly virus (maybe one he was meant to cure but instead mutates it and makes an even worse strain) that completely obliterated the remaining humans on the planet. Eggman survives either through a natural immunity or because he made a cure, but was too late in making it to save anyone else. The virus had no effect on the anthros. It would explain the lack of humans in most games, give Eggman somewhat of a motivation (taking back HIS planet), and would still allow for Shadow and GUN to exist. Don't read the comics so idk if that's been done in one of them yet. But I'd still prefer for the world to have a balance of humans and anthros at least in the main timeline.

I certainly have always found the element of human characters to be meaningful and important in regards to certain aspects to the lore of Sonic. Whenever it's the case for human-like characters such as Shahra and Merlina, Professor Gerald and Maria and the high pivotal greater role of Professor Pickle in Sonic Unleashed, humans have mattered in Sonic lore and provide a certain edge to Sonic's world. Talking about the outside media of Sonic, I'd say that the movies have a great handling of human characters, more precisely with Tom and Maddie Wachowski, and how the town of Green Hills is influential to this version of Sonic. Because when we do get to see their introduction in the first movie, you see the fascination that Sonic has in regards to them and the town due to how different and interesting they seem. Once Tom and Sonic finally meet, both characters get to nurture and complement each other in their respective journeys, underlying the themes of home and friendship, and exploring Sonic's big trait of helping and changing those around him; lending to make Tom realize how important Green Hills really is as opposite to going for San Francisco. And in the sequel, it's even more stronger because they stick with Sonic at the final act, and when it seemed that all was lost, they rather get their own lives sacrificed than running away. That's how much human characters have mattered in Sonic lore as a whole

My personal preference: Have human characters who - and this is something nobody ever seems to realize is even a possibility - are _actually_ designed with the same sensibilities as any other Sonic character. If Eggman weren't enough already, we have the Billy Hatcher characters for reference as well. It baffles me that despite having had Yuji Uekawa on board, it never once occurred to Sonic Team to have the lad design any of the miscellaneous human characters for Sonic games. Ideally, a "Sonic-style" human would have noodle-like limbs (if the character is muscular, limbs are thick and somewhat bulbous), large extremities, a torso that's a little narrow at the bottom and slightly wider at the top (or shaped like a bean or a blob/egg, as is the case with kids and chubsters respectively), a simple-shaped head usually without much of a jawline, and big, expressive eyes with oblong pupils. No feature should ever be too detailed so as not to contrast with the anthro characters texture-wise, of course. A few of the young, stylish fellas here and there could even have dyed hair and gloves to give a little normalcy to the fact that most of the main cast has neon fur and seemingly arbitrary gloves as well, as if they're a popular fashion trend. I also think humans should be shown to live alongside anthros in an integrated society, with humans constituting probably one-half or one-third of the population. I think that's nearly as important as the art style alone; Sonic and company being the only anthros in a human world was always incredibly weird and made no sense. Overall, I think having a blend of anthros and Sonic-style humans is the best way to present a coherent, logical world.

I'm definitely in favor of human characters in Sonic games, to me their presence enrich the universe of the franchise tbh. Personally the style that I consider perfect for humans in Sonic's world is the Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog. Not only do they create a great juxtaposition, but they make the cartoony characters stand out better, even the human ones like Eggman, Gerald and Maria. I'd even go as far as saying that 06, while it went a little over the edge with the realistic designs, still felt faithful to that idea, though I'd still say argue that in SA2 and Shadow05 they blend better with the Sonic characters because their designs, while realistic, still have some stylized elements. Unleashed's art style however is easily my least favorite. Not only because it's completely contradicting to the style that was already consistent with the general human designs, but also because it's the sole proof that just because it's more cartoony, doesn't mean it's automatically more fitting. The pixar-esque art style really does not at all blend with the Sonic characters, hell even Eggman feels completely out of place alongside them. It's like if you took Yosemite Sam and placed him in Turning Red or whatever.
