That would be really fun. You could even double up on the variety of classes by introducing different backgrounds - like the Word Bearers, Night Lords, and other original legion warriors, plus newer CSM like the Crimson Corsairs and generic chaos marines - with various benefits and detriments that could really shape each individual marine in a way you just couldn't get by being mono-faction.

2:35 it's because when this was first advertised it was Chaos Gate 2: Daemon Hunters, then they just dropped the 2 eventually. It's fitting, since the original Chaos Gate was very much also a Warhammer XCOM game - just more like the original of the time; X-COM UFO Defense. So modern Chaos Gate is similar to modern XCOM, and old Chaos Gate was similar to old X-COM, which is a nice dynamic to see.

My personal experience: The game wasnt hard at all IMO, even if the battles were nerve wracking. First playthrough got to the end in 400 days with no Morbius gate missions ever happening. This is coming from an XCOM save scum that only plays on standard, people should use common sense when allocating resources. So you know I suck, but I never had to save scum on this game. I have been able to open paths by breaking walls, maybe you just got unlucky. While surprising, cancelling the boss hunt midway meant I missed the fight I was the most excited for (the corrupted imperial knight fight) it was also my favourite part of the game, so cutting it short felt awfull (I could replay it, but I dont feel like it right now). Prognosticars arent necessary, I bought two, and one was sent with Vakir during an encounter, had no problems in the whole game. I had a TON of fun deciding what to repair each time, choosing right is so satisfying. You win ship battles based on gun level. If your guns are equal to or superior to the enemy you win and get requisition, so when you are confident on your essential repairs, get those guns to max and start hunting Death Guard ships. Play enemy turns on fast, it takes a life time otherwise. Completely agree on repetitiveness true. I chose to just sit down until Vakir finished banishing Kadex at the end, I was tired of going in, blowing everything up, and leaving. The soundtrack was nice and I noticed some influence from the Dawn of War series that I loved. They didnt add Iter Infernos though, and thats heresy. Kaldor Draigo never mentioned tangerines, literally unplayable, 0/10

What difficulty did you play on? Hard and Harder increase enemy hp and pod size. One of the biggest complaints and deal breakers in this game for many people was the presence of the cultist and their capability. You did noted how it's implenmentation can be improved. But the thing is the correct answer is in the original chaos gate game! In the original game, it start up with many cultist, like dozens at one time but with only a couple of chaos space marine to later game more and more chaos space marine with even chaos dreadnought and minor demons. In the older game the cultist are pretty much died with one shot from your boltgun and does not pose much of a threat even with their frag grenade. They were more like cannon folders which is exactly what they are supposed to be. The old game were very popular and many people even prefer it over the original XCOM with it's unique enemy design and it's special armor system. The answers are in their original game, all they had to do was to follow the exact system and make the graphic in modern standard. But despite dev's claim that they learned from original chaos gate, it was nothing like it! It's more like a modern-day xcom game with it's health design but without xcom's awesome modbility and flexibility in new game plus. The enemy type and the armor system that allowed the original to complete with the original xcom was completely abandoned. I will not have a problem If it just call it warhammer 40k gray knight like the mechanics. Because it suggests it's a brand new title and new system and can not be compared with xcom which has decades of history behind it. But now with it's titled CHAOS GATE and yet refuses to implement the surprior feature from the older title and compete with xcom, instead the dev try to play second fiddle to the modern XCOM. This is infuriating, I felt I am lied to as I was expecting CHAOS GATE 2! Not XCOM grey knight! It's like playing yearly EA title that removes its feature in the newer game from old title except it's decades of waiting.

Please before criticizing my comment, try to learn about the Orginal CHAOS GATE, it's pretty cheap on GOG which is only 6 pounds, as long as you do not mind the older graphic and the key binds, you will soon find many and many things that game did better than demon hunters. Right one more really important point, there are a lot more variants of terrain in the original game. inside of a stronghold, sieging of a stronghold, assaulting in a wasteland. assaulting in winter, assaulting in dense jungle, the map are a lot bigger, you see a lot more enemies, no regenerating, shield rocket launcher, smoke grenades, krak grenade, you can bring assault marine squad that can jump around the map before fuel runs out and have 3 dude melee one guy. You can bring 12 marines......

I've never been remotely interested in the Grey Knights, so I sort of wrote this off as "just another 40k game", especially since so many others near the time were so crushingly mediocre. The price point was a major turn-off as well. This video has been enlightening, I didn't get the impression the game was as well-loved by the creators just from the storepage and marketing. I absolutely adore when creators add so much attention to detail and go the extra mile with their animations, and for me the art style is a major win. It evokes the rubber-mouthed character portraits from Warcraft 3, which I think is a perfect tonal fit for the bombastic melodrama of the setting. Wonderful review, beautifully presented, and thanks for the content!

(Spoiler about the end of the Game , quite a.big one ) in the Battle with the great Demon, before the last Battle in the Game , i sent a team of knights with a purifier ( it was the one that was inmune to status Effect ) , the Demon was the one that regenerates and splashed ácid, In one moment the purifier get isolated from the rest of the team at the other side of a cliff, he held his own in melee, being impervious to the ácid while mutilating that unholy heresy, his battlebrothers aid him with grenades and bolter rounds... At the end he dealt the finishing blow outlasting the Demon. He was too wounded for the last Battle with mortarion and the death guard, he had to stay in the balefull edict while his battlebrothers fought the traitor primarch... He was the Only of My veterans to return Titan , the other 5 veterans and 3 experiencia battlebrothers, in the warp. Ah, Poncha, the man with a sense of humor dryer than Tomb King vagina. Outstanding review. You give these games the respect they deserve by giving in-depth reviews, regardless of how much time it takes. This game needed over an hour to explain, so I'm sure IGN gave it about two and a half minutes. I'm a HUGE tactical RPG fan, but I was skeptical of this one at launch. Mechanicus was great, but the bugs made it almost unplayable at times, and this one looked like a minefield. Seeing the Grey Knights taking down enemies with environmental kills seemed a little too good to be true. Based on your opinions, it looks like this game was meant for me, and I'll definitely pick it up now. Expansions would be great, but I don't know if they have any planned. I know making a Nurgle-centric game was a gamble, but all the units look as good as they do because they did it. I certainly wouldn't want a Tzeench expansion that was just recolored units. Keep up the good work. You're doing an amazing job!

this was a great review, and i like the idea behind the expansion/spin off idea. also, man i would love to have a dreadnought to play with within the game i am a 40k nerd, and have been one since Dawn of War (original release). when this game first released, i wasnt interested as its yet another turn based tactical strategy game but then i found myself listening to the bumping into the animations made for Mandalore's review of mechanicus, which i really love the sound track for. Out of curiousity, i clicked on a video but Indridcasts (Dawn of War 2 caster and a fellow brother in Nurgles embrace) and he was playing the game. I picked the game up on his recommendation. i am on my 3rd run. My first was on easy, learning the mechanics. Restarted as once i had the mechanics down, i thought to up the difficulty. My second run i went through till the 1st major plot point and realized i had made a huge error with my prognosticars and my campaign fell apart pretty quickly after that. my 3rd run, i have made mistakes but so far im having fun. my only complaint, which isnt really a complaint, is the music isnt as good as mechanicus. thats it really. balance seems okay, as it is a power fantasy game and the enemies do get harder as you progress, sadly i was spoiled when looking up videos on the game for the final boss but i can forgive the internet for that

Gameplay and story are top notch in this one. As you say it is similar to xcom, but the ruleset feels much deeper and there seem to be multiple viable ways to kit out classes of which there are eight! So for a first game of this kind by this developer, this game is an absolute knockout! They really put tons of effort into bosses that just get used once (though some could get modified and used as new enemy types for later games)! The story was easily one of the best I have experienced in warhammer 40k. There are a few named characters, but they are all properly fleshed with their own backstories, moments of strength, but also doubt and weakness. Especially the end lends some real strength and meaning to their and your decisions, your whole mission basically. Also, you get to see some real epic named characters. I would really love to see them expand this franchise, revisit characters and maybe add more mission variety.

It's may just me as I enjoyed the older xcom form of more realistic and complex combat system which is why I loved the Xenonaut so much and was expecting demon hunter to original chaos gate to be like Xenonaut to the original XCOM. Quick explanation for the original armor system, in the original game each hit caused irreversible damage to space marine's armor, the lower the armor value the more likely the armor will be penetrated and cause direct damage to health. The librarian in the original chaos gate is also a lot better as there are dozens of ability one can pick like quickening, group teleportation and literal wap storm, fire and lighting. WAY more awsome than demon hunter's librarian. Also the original CHAOS GATE has way more varaty of grenades and weapons like terminator weapon, las canon and stasis grenade, assault marine yet feeling a lot more realistic and grounded. As the power level are quite consistent, your marine will not crash cultist and over come groups of berserkers and chaos terminatiors with good team work. But they were not put up against primarch nor where they expected to. Unlike demon hunters who can struggle aginst cultist in the early game but beat chaos knights and even Primarch in the end game which is high lore breaking and immersion breaking.

Choose glorious deeds selectively and develop your game style/chapter to achieve them. Run a balanced squad (Justicar, Purgator, Interceptor and Apothecary) ..melee, range, psych and heal. Its ON YOU to know who is doing the killing/getting experience - and you need to keep all your knights levelled up... just like long war et al; always "include a rookie" to get them levelled up.

My personal dream is a full-on, high budget Chapter Master remake/game (I dunno how to categorize it, since the game is out in a form of a mod for game that basically requires it to run itself) . You manage a chapter with all the things that entails. Imagine all the art assets that can be made for that project, imagine if you had the option to lead your chapter through the 10k years since the heresy. Considering how good warhammer games are getting today, I don't think it's really that far-fetched of and idea.

I have a ton of philosophies about this kind of thing. You have these unstoppable warriors, from one of the strongest chapters of Space marine ever, but, you put them into a real time strategy game and need to balance their stats around a campaign / story you wanna tell within that genre. So you have to nerf the strongers space marines ever. You CAN make a good game out of this, but you have to change the Lore to do it. I really like the idea of having a Dynasty warriors style game but set in 40k.

I guess some of us are busy talking to real-life women instead of relentlessly sexualizing every female video game character we can manage.

Hey, Gregorian Catholic here. You talk about how the Baleful Edict's portion of the ost sounds like chanting. This is because in the background the background choir is chanting a real chant. They are chanting the first part of Agnus Dei IX starting at 0:26. Starting at 0:26, the portions chanted are "Agnus Dei,qui tollis peccata mundi". This means in English, "Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world". This is also the segment used in the video. At 1:08 of the piece, "qui tollis" is heard again. Ignoring the fact that the writers of the song just "wanted to pick something at sounded cool and GrimDark (TM)" and the Agnus Dei is one of the most easily chanted ordinaries (sometimes even chanted in the Novus Ordo Mass), the portion of the chant may have been selected on purpose.

Love the video as always, I was doubtful when this game first came out and waited to get until it’s discount and first dlc. Fair to say my negative out look on this game is well justified. My biggest problem with this game is the use of the title chaos gate and their over uses of cultists in the early game especially when it’s contrast to the end game.

I'm so torn on the Ending. Spoilers. It's really good and all the new characters are great: But Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Black Libraries foremost hack, completely botched Mortarion and to an extend Draigo. This game's narrative would feel so much more personal if Mortarion and Draigo were cut out of the story. Yes, seeing Morty animated and use most of his Tabletop rules in 3D is awesome. But it's such a lame dialogue, he sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon villain and nothing like the somber cursed Primarch from Guy Haley's Dark Imperium. This is also the biggest detriment to newer players, who don't know 40k: Bringing Mortarion and Draigo into the game out of nowhere is bad storytelling, because the story only works if you are familiar with both characters. Draigo gets a bit of an explanation via Ectar, but when everyone is like "Mortarion! I should have known it was you!" I was cringing in my seat thinking about how someone new would go "Who?"

phoenix point is actually the progenitor of precision attacks. in fact the entire aiming system operates under that. it's sort of like a circle where you can target particular body parts but has a random spread within the circle. you have to destroy particular body parts, this builds up blood loss and removes abilities.

you were talking about pod triggers, this is just like new-xcom. honestly i sounds like they handled it better than xcom generally given you get your actions back. that said the inching up half move by half move has been burned into my brain thanks to fucking ARCHONS

The aiming at specific body parts thing has been a thing in turn based games at minimum since fallout 1, it's not at all close to new

Regarding Kaldor Draigo’s level: way to high to be possible realistic. Also for me that game would have been perfect had Draigo and Mortarion not been present. The presence of the former got me realy worried about the direction the story will take and the later only proved me right.

Caldor Draigo is the second strongest none-godly (that means things like primarchs or the emperor himself don't count) creature in the galaxy
