Fun Fact: In Sonic Unleashed, Savannah Citadel Act 2, the easiest way to get the S rank is to NOT drift, and just run by turning using the Right Stick for the Camera and only boost at the straight paths. Love how they kept this level being a complete fuckaround to finish the right way.

They missed a trick by not making the traversal in this area based around using those birds to get to other segments of the island and having the challenge be a mixture of avoiding obstacles on those and leading them to land on literal highways in the sky for extra platforming challenges and when you finish those and whatever challenges are on the islands themselves they'd unlock springs or rails that go back so you don't always have to do them to get back like normal.

What's funny is that people complain this game seems kinda rushed. Though you can see some aspects of incompleteness throughout, I don't think Chaos is rushed. I tried a mod that cuts all 2D in Chaos island (except when wall jumping). If anything, it's OVER-development that ruined this island because the devs made it harder for themselves to program more 2D segments.

You don't really "program" 2D segments though. It's a collision trigger that puts you in 2D, so all 2D segments are code-wise the same thing. Also level designing in 2D is easier, something to think about. So no, I would absolutely say that making 2D segments are easier than making 3D segments and yes Chaos Island is rushed

@@Onaterdem But here's the thing. You can glitch by the 2D segment register and play through these sections in 3D. You can't help but ask yourself: "Why didn't they keep most of them in 3D"? Sure, they are clearly designed to be completed in 2D, but the fact they even programmed more 2D segments, rather than keeping them 3D, seems like an unnecessary effort.

@@roiitzkovich4545 Yeah, that's just bad level design lol. You're not meant to do that, but since it's open world, you can bypass the 2D trigger. "Why didn't they keep them in 3D?" because as I already said, a 2D trigger is extremely easy to place, it's literally no extra effort, and 2D level design is much much easier than 3D level design. I'm not sure what you're thinking of, there's simply no extra effort that went into this. Do you mean "they should've kept the design exactly the same and not have placed a 2D trigger"? As I said, you're not meant to be in those sections in 3D. They are designed to work in 2D, and when you roam them in 3D, the level design breaks and things don't work properly. Think of it as a "3D in 2D bug". It's not meant to happen and it doesn't work properly, so in order to make the level design work in 3D, they'd have to spend more effort. Tl;dr: Placing a 2D trigger takes no effort, making 3D level design makes more effort than 2D level design. The current level design is made for 2D and doesn't work when you're in 3D (unintended), so they couldn't have "just left it 3D".

While I still think it’s enjoyable, Chaos Island is easily the worst to go around in with the numerous things that send me flying into the air and the freaking 2D, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Sega, Sonic Team, if you (hopefully) do open-world again NO 2D! 2D doesn’t work at all in spaces like this and it’s even kind of false advertising (again!) since we thought we would be completely free (since you know, that’s what freaking OPEN-WORLD means!) but then 2D comes back again, punches us in the face and says “You’re not getting rid of me anytime soon” Edit:Oh yeah and the pinball freaking sucked too, Knight was awesome though

I didn't mind the 2D sections, but i DESPISE the fact that most of the treasure icons are in reality boosters and bounce pads. Overall, Chaos is...alright. It does have probably the best boss in the game, but the good things end here. The Pinball is torture, the smaller islands are just annoying to go to and the invisible wall at the bridge is pointless.

I'm 99% certain the insane increase of 2D sections at this point in the game was because of time constraints. Developing for 2D is significantly easier and quicker, because there's much less space involved. I don't know if Sonic Team is just bad with time management or SEGA just hates them for some reason, but ever since 2006, possibly longer, the Sonic franchise has been cursed with insanely tight deadlines, which is why shortcuts are taken with the level design. It's also the reason why Cyberspace levels are just reused from older games. It's all a matter of time.

Chaos Island wasn't perfect but god damn it's my favorite aesthetic, has my favorite Titan and admittedly has some of my favorite Cyberspace stages I actually didn't mind 3-5 that much, if you boost immediately after the drift ends, the pace goes faster- after playing the Savannah Citadel drift stage and witnessing how annoying the drift is in Unleashed, I'd take the Cyberspace version anyday- but that's just me Also I'm surprised you didn't talk about 3-1 and 3-3, those are my favorites

Chaos Island definitely was the worst island in the game for me, but now with the spindash, it's become a favorite during new playthroughs There are so many hills and slopes where you can go flying with the spindash and you can literally never get lost anymore with all the new shortcuts. And you can literally skip so many platforming sections and just snipe the memory tokens from out of the air. I love this island now.

My first run on Chaos island went like this: collect memory tokens See blue emerald in distance talk to tails see red emerald in distance talk to tails see all emeralds glowing but no idea how to reach any 1 of them googled a fully revealed map of chaos island, blindly revealed all beacons on the mainland gave up and youtube-ed "how to get blue chaos emerald chaos island" other emeralds resolved quickly after that downloaded full Chaos Island track to enjoy movements 2-7 as most my in-game time is spent listening to movement 1

I love Chaos island, but not because for its design, is because breaking 2D sections is so fun, you can literally fly all the goddam time (which is insanely fun) and the content is actual peakness (if we refuse to talk about the pinball minigame lol).

While I agree that the 2D sections on this island are annoying, I do like the atmosphere of the island itself and plus they finally addressed the issues with Tail’s character for the past decade. Fortress is probably my favorite Guardian design too since I think airships are cool. And the Titan bossfight is great. Especially that finisher. That was just peak epic-ness.
