Firsthand accounts of survivors from the deadly wildfires that devastated Maui in August 2023 are in part 2 of my documentary "Hell in Paradise" (part 1 here: • Families flee wildfire... )
Includes dramatic video footage showing the chaotic evacuation of Lahaina as police blocked streets, forcing residents to abandon vehicles and jump into the ocean to escape the raging flames. Interviews with teens who escaped with their mother by swimming out to sea, a survivor who huddled under a wet blanket in a canal, and others who recount their harrowing stories of survival. The fast-moving wildfires leveled most of the historic town, killing over 100 people. It's the deadliest wildfire in over a century in the United States. Also we take a close look at the iconic 150-year-old banyan tree that had become a symbol of Lahaina. A heartbreaking look at the devastation from Hawai'i's worst wildfire disaster. Subscribe for updates and visit our GoFundMe to help the Lahaina community rebuild.

Lawyer here. Police chief still says not using sirens was a good idea. What about turning water off but keeping electricity on, blocking escape roads and sending children home from school with instructions to shelter in place? This calls for criminal negligence prosecutions for all the decision-makers.

They had to have electricity for comms they had to have water for fire trucks who could actually use the water. And the sirens would have told people there was a tsunami not a fire because they dont have a fire siren only a tsunami siren. Telling everyone there a tsunami during a fire doesnt seem like a good idea especially if nobody has electricity to acsess informstion communications and hubdrends of people using their garden hose preventing fire trucks being able to get water would be pretty horrific too. Its not easy dealing with such a huge disaster like thism had they turned off electricity and not water and put the sirens on and people had ran to the hills on fire and people had used the water so trucks had none and people had no way to electrically communicate and get info charge a phone or tv or radio does not sound like it would have been rosy. They had to make a choice. Its so easy from your sofa after that fact to say well if they had done x instead of y that would have been better. We dont know that. At all.

Im a wildland firefighter in Colorado. I have family on Maui (Haiku). This is a disgrace. 20 firefighters including myself have offered multiple times a day to fly to Maui at our own expense to help contain the other fires and assist in recovery. We have been rebuffed by Maui leaders who continually tell us, "its all under control". I was on scene at the Marshall fire in Boulder county and it took us less than 30 hours to search for bodies in 1100 homes that were burned. Only 2 people died in that fire. Hawaii has been warned for years about this. Theyve ignored it. Absolutely disgusting.

You hope “whoever did this will find peace one day”? And what about the victims of the ones who did this? What about the peace of those who lost loved ones and everything they had because of the actions of “the ones who did this”? You wish peace for truly eviI people who caused the death of many people, and tremendous loss for the survivors, but you have nothing to say for the victims? I hope those who did this will face justice, and pay for what they did. I’m not going to hold my breath though, because there’s never been any justice for the ones who have done other terrible atrocities in recent years, like the towers going down, and the Paradise fires, so I suspect this will be the same. However, I know we have a Creator, YHVH incarnate in Jesus Christ, and those who did this will NOT escape His judgement upon them. If they were called to repentance, they might, but people who can commit such eviI acts have no conscience, because their conscience has been seared, and a person who has a seared conscience has no ability to repent for their wicked deeds. There’s not going to be any high powered lawyers working to cut them a plea deal when they stand before YHVH in Christ, and all the money they valued above life when they were on the earth will also be useless on their day of receiving God’s righteous judgment. May God have mercy upon their soul, and may His will be done.

To get this straight. The fire fighters came extremly late, an official wouldn´t even be willing to allow them to use the water reserve at first, the police was blocking at least one street out of town, the sirens would not go off, the officials started to send out warnings via SMS while the cell towers were already failing and help of other regional fire stations was declined even as they lost control of the situation. What´s next? Aressting people for bringing food and water to the survivors? This is beyond words.

Its not a regular fire, a wildfire driven by 70+mph winds is rather uncommon.. It became a literal firestorm. A regular forest fire can burn around 800f(Cars start melting at 600f), but ita akin to starting a fire, you have a small kindling but you blow on it to make it glow hotter to light up the reat of the fire. The 70+ mph winds made the fire MUCH hotter and spread MUCH faster than a regular forest fire.

@robinbjorge9329 This is exactly what a high wind uncontrolled wildfire does. I live in an area where high wind wildfires are common, theres at least a couple every year that burn nearby the town I grew up in. This is exactly how they act. They can change direction suddenly, move at about 30-40 mph and flare up faster than you can believe. The difference is where I live we are used to them so have evacuation protocols in place, fire breaks and fire lines, controlled burns at the start of the dry season, a huge experienced wilderness firefighting force that can be mobilized very fast and lots of other controls. But mix high wind wildfires with the authorities being completely unprepared and inexperienced for them and you get this horrific tragedy. Never attribute malice where incompetence is much more likely.

I get the feeling that govt. officials reenergized fallen power lines during the disaster, knowing what that would cause. It might explain why there was a sudden unexpected flare up part way through the disaster. And all while public safety was herding victims into and roadblocking victims in disaster zones.

@@aynsleyonearth I’m not sure if any of these fires are deliberately set in BC , Yukon, Ontario etc. I just drove my brother back to the interior, and we drove through the remains of hurricane Hillary. There was tons of rain, wind and lightning happening . The latter likely being the culprit of many fires here in Bc. in Maui, as far as I know the Lahaina fire started due to neglected power poles , one which fell & sparked a fire & heavy hurricane-like winds helped spread it. I’ve also heard that the person responsible for NOT sounding the alarms for evacuation for the Lahaina fire has stepped down from his position

They clearly love each other and made it through by supporting and encouraging each other and not losing their focus and freaking out. Heroes. May God be with this family and my prayers go out to all of them that they can rebuild and enjoy their life in LaHaina again.❤. Happy to donate!

yes like hawaii, california also has incompetent useless government that acts as nothing but a parasite on the taxpaying citizen and provides no benefits or service. instead of monitoring dangerous conditions and taking care of the fire hazards through land management, it spends money on "going green" bs to install smart meters in your house to control your thermostat. it sounds like the fires started the same exact way, negligent power company who wanted to maximize profit by not burying cables and was too dumb to turn off power during a dangerous storm, which then caused a fire because incompetent government never tended to the fire hazards of the land. then government just got in the way of fleeing citizens by either refusing to sound the alarm or outright blocking the roads. thats what happens when you hire based on race quotas instead of intelligence. we have become a 3rd world country.
