It’s meant to be modded! That’s the idea with these guitars. That’s why they spent time make the guitar body and neck great. I have made many cheap guitars sound and play awesome. I think it’s an excellent buy. Who needs an expensive guitar.
@TheGrandmaMoses
@TheGrandmaMoses 5 жыл бұрын
Imo, you cannot use the phrases 'it is supposed to be modded' and 'cheap gear, excellent buy' in one sentence. If it's supposed to be modded, it's no longer cheap gear. It may be a cheap basis for a mod, but it's no cheap gear if you do not plan on using the gear you bought, but instead mod everything. Changing pickups on this alone would set one back at least 200 more bucks. New tuners? 50 more gone. And swoosh, you are at 800 for this guitar 'modded', which is the price of a Mexican Strat or a used Les Paul Standard. Heck I've seen new LP Studios from last year's range go for 899 bucks at my local shop. And that Chapman guitar will not end up favorably when compared to them, even with new pickups and tuners. Now I know Chappers spouts the modding nonsense on his channels every day, but for this to be a mod-worthy guitar its price would have to be at around 200 bucks maximum. Because then you could mod it and come away with a mod for 500 bucks. Then it doesn't have to compare to the 800+ bucks guitars and everything's fine. TLDR: If you want to change most things about a guitar because it's 'supposed to be modded', the guitar should not cost 500 bucks.

@@TheGrandmaMoses Not only that, but I really don't feel like most people can just drop $500 and go "Oh yeah that was cheap." I mean my house payment isn't that much and sometimes i struggle to pay that. I have spent a lot less on guitars and had just as much, and don't forget what you can get for $500 on the used market.

13s means it's for down tuning, going from 13s to 9 without a truss rod adjustment and intonation setup? That's why you aren't staying in tune man not to mention 13s would have made the nut more wide
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 жыл бұрын
I did adjust the truss rod. It didn't take much, I think the original owner put 13's on it and didn't make the other adjustments needed to get it right. Either way, the tuners weren't great, but that's to be expected for guitars in this price range. They were tolerable but I'd put a set of nice locking tuners on it, if I intended to keep it.

What you say about this guitar,pretty much applies to my 2013 PRS SE Tremonti Custom. Great neck,fretwork,finish,playability,but pickups were mediocre,the nut was a cheapo plastic nut, cut only for one string size and the bridge was made out of inferior metal(propably some aluminum alloy).As a result,the guitar went out of tune,the moment you would just touch the trem. After putting a Duncan ''Hot Rodded Set'',Schaller mini-locking tuners,a Graphtech nut and eventually replacing the trem system,with a Hipshot Contour whammy bar,the guitar became a real blues/ rock/metal machine. I would mod the living shit out of this thing,with some Duncans or DiMarzios,locking tuners,new bridge,nut and turn it into a workhorse guitar.

You buy this type of ''budget'' guitars,as modding platforms and turn them into workhorse instruments. The thing is,if the construction/neck/fretwork is good,everything else can be upgraded and you will have a great guitar,if you're willing to do some work and spend money on the parts. A cheap guitar,can be turned into a great guitar,a cheap amp however,will always sound crappy.

Just an FYI for those waiting to get a V2 Ghost fret. They don't come with the nice gig bag. I feel ripped off by Rob. He really went out of his way to avoid telling people this. He made one comment in a vid. That's it. Why pay to upgrade a guitar that's meant to be modded, and leave out the nice gig bag. Shame on you Rob. You have lost my faith in you, and you company. Give them a year at guitar center, and they will be blowing them out cheap. I have spoke with smaller retailers that stopped carrying them due to slow delivery, and quality. Buy a Schecter, and get a real guitar. Not some mediocre player that had the financial backing of Andertons to start a cheap guitar company. I'm so fucking pissed. I have wanted a lefty Explorer for years, and I saw that gig bag on Phil McKnight's review, and was stoked. Now anyone connected to Chapman gives me the the runaround when all I want to do is purchase one, but apparently you cant even do that.

fixing frets requires tools and expertise. I'm learning and slowly gathering all that up. there are sure some great videos out there that cover it as a subject. However, changing tuners, pickups, swaping out saddles....most of us guitar geeks have those skills. If you're a guitar builder and you have to skimp...frets are most important. You can even leave the electronics out completely.....ill grab a harness and the pickups i want somewhere....but frets? much much different.

@@TheGuitarPit for £499 though, that's the exact same price as the Epiphone LP Custom Pro (the tuxedo guitars), and you don't need to switch pickups or upgrade those because they're already worth every £ you get,hassle free,out of the box. This one,if you upgrade it,you'd be spending like £200 more or so? Hence that's the £700-ish territory for the total cost and that's hitting the Jackson Pro or the PRS SE lines, or Ibanez RG models slot neatly at this price range. You can even get LTD MH401 models ar £700. Hence, you have to be an avid Chappers fan to want this thing.👎👎

@Roadking26
@Roadking26 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheGuitarPit I have a guy that has worked on my guitars for 15 years. I wouldn't let anyone touch them including me. Lol. The pickups were $69 a piece. A super distortion in the bridge, and a super 2 in the neck. Planet waves locking tuners. (they cut the string for you) the pots, and jack are dimazio. Made by CTS. Switchcraft switch, and The bridge saddles have the graphite string savers. I forget the name, but it is a popular brand. Make sure, and get 10.5" saddles. So a little over $150 in parts, and $100 in labor, but I got it for $350, so it comes out about $50 over retail. The V2 is $549. If your handy with a soldering gun you can do it yourself, but right now I'm rebuilding, an older SG, and had to install a tremel-no on another guitar, so it was easier to have him do the work. Rob said he made his guitars to upgrade, so they concentrated more on the body, and neck, so they put less money into everything else. From your review I can tell you found that out. I'm a lefty that plays strung right so if it has the slanted bridge I can't change the strings around. You can't set the intonation correctly. This bridge is perfect for that. Now I have a guitar that is just as good as one costing twice as much. If I would have had to pay full price, then I would have just gotten the pro model. I have a new Schecter V1 custom I'm going to sell cheap, and put that towards a Chapman pro model of some sort. I already have some V's so I won't miss it that much even though it is a sweet guitar.

I haven't tried an RGD61AL. They look like nice guitars, but I've heard you should check the fret edges and look carefully for other finishing errors on those. Some are great, others need some work. Otherwise they come with nice hardware and look like a decent deal. Depending on where you live (Norway, I assume?), you may want to check the used market for a used Ibanez Prestige. You'll get higher quality fit/finish, but you might not get the modern pickups and stuff that the AL has. I'd also recommend a used Kiesel but I doubt you have access to them over there.

Fret work is usually pretty easy to tell. If you slide your hand down the neck and the fret edges aren't done right, they'll feel rough or sharp. Makes for a very unpleasant playing experience. This guitar is almost $500 new, but the fretwork on it was fine. For that kind of money, I don't think you should have to level the frets or do a ton of work. If it's someone's first guitar, they aren't going to be comfortable going home and immediately sanding their frets. Sure, you can do it, and I have a video doing that to the East Coast guitar I recently picked up, but that guitar was $100 and I didn't mind putting in the extra work. I played it for a couple of hours trying to like it but just couldn't get into it at all. My 15 year old son wanted to buy it from me because he thought it looked cool but he played it for a couple of days and didn't like it either. For what they charge for that guitar I didn't expect to hate it as much as I did. Not worth the hype! Luckily riff city has a really good return policy so back it went! I ordered a Harley Benton sc450 in the tobacco sun burst finish and I absolutely love it! I had to set it up and condition the fret board when I got it because it was so dry. Other than that I was very pleased with how it played and sounded through my blackstar combo. Nice review. The chapman quitars are interesting. Since they are now in guitar centers i think just like what happened to schecters-- everyone will buy one and then the novalty wears off and your be seeing a ton of used ones at dirt cheap prices. Swapping the pickups and tuners will cost $150 to $200 depending on your pickup choices (of course there's used ones too) and you got a decent guitar at $500. I'll be watching the Chapman guitars and watch the market get saturated....then will be time to snag one.

Yup, sure will. Reverb is pretty sparse right now, there was 1 of these and 1 pro model...the pro is about $800. This was a cheap guitar, but a very decent platform to swap some hardware on. Much better than the Harley Benton's neck/materials/finish work.

Whats wrong with the pups again? Lack of highs ?lack of 3k ? mids hole ? I dont get the word flat.
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 жыл бұрын
I guess they just didn't have much character. Sound like any other cheap pickup in other guitars. You'd never pick these out of a lineup the same way you could with a strat, LP, etc. These sounded a bit shrill, didn't have much for mids, and just sounded boring to me. Personal taste though -- if you think they sound great, keep em!
@alexandert696
@alexandert696 5 жыл бұрын
No dont get me wrong, I do think there is a mid hole in there but my amp is middy anyways. I get a boss ge7 and fiddle with the freqs to get a clean sound I like and then a driven on. And thats how I can tell whats wrong with the pups. Had a HH Sterling By MM that had insane mids and highs. Although high Output they smoothed out the distortion, which is good for lead. Maybe. I even subbed,great channel btw
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alexander! Yeah fair point, some pickups suit better with different setups. Or as you mentioned, you can EQ most of them to where you want to be. But with that in mind, these pickups didn't exactly inspire much out of me. They just felt "about the same as other cheap pickups."
@alexandert696
@alexandert696 5 жыл бұрын
I get you. I cant really tell if I like them or not unless I try them out myself. That goes for all gear, I have to spend at least 10 mins to form a decent opinion. From this video alone ,they sound above average. There are grades of "el cheapo pups" and those 100$ axes do sound shrill and mid holed. Duncan designed are not worth the upgrade ,unless you dont like their eq.

These are very poor quality guitars, I've tried many models and the fretboard feels like sandpaper very uncomfortable to do bends on and just not very comfortable. Be honest at this price you can get 10s guitars and/or Wolf guitars they are way better than this at the same price

When Chapman started copying other guitars that other manufacturers were copying off each other anyway. Thats when the brand started becoming less relevant. Had Rob kept it to how it was before where he would get people to vote on what sort of features, specs or body shapes they wanted and make the guitar from all the highest voted suggestions. Then at least the brand would still have some form of identity or unique selling point. I always quite liked the idea that his guitars were more of a 'blank canvas' that one can buy and upgrade at their own leisure but you can do that with any other guitar too. But theres nothing really unique to them - They are copying the same body shapes as the hundreds of other guitars that are available out there. Rob cant keep running their business the same way because brands like Harley Benton have been recently making waves as far as budget/working-man's-guitars goes and they come in much cheaper than Chapman guitars and the finishes and colours are pretty good too. From what i have gathered even though Harley Benton do copy the body shapes of other guitars, the hardware they ship with is very serviceable but of course the guitar is so cheap that you'd probably upgrade the hardware anyway.... They are just so much better value for money from that point of view. ::EDIT:: On a side note -- With how much time he has to devote to other projects like DorJe and his family. Maybe this move was a way to close one chapter so he could dedicate more time to another while still getting a little income from it. There is a hardcore following for Chapman guitars so Im sure they'll still get sales since they are available in the UK and the USA (though im sure these retailers also ship internationally)
@TheGuitarPit
@TheGuitarPit 5 жыл бұрын
Harley Benton is certainly going to change the way some companies operate, but in America, Chapman can be purchased from many large stores and returned easily if you have a problem. Harley Benton on the other hand is much harder to get in the states, and if you get a dud, you're in trouble. And agreed, I thought the voting thing was a cool idea.

I watch a ton of guitar videos. I own several guitars from a fender american down to a epiphone les paul. 15 guitars in all. With that said I really tried to watch your video because I want a Chapman guitar. I couldn't get very far because of that sound you make when you speak. I'm not knocking you. Played this and the Pro. This review was too kind as there is nothing about this model that makes it stand out from any other $200 junk Indonesian guitar. Cheap trash. And the Made in Korea “Ghost fret Pro” model is grossly overpriced.... That thing could be compared to $599 guitars and still barely hold its own. I feel sorry for anybody who paid retail for these. Both were mediocre or slightly worse than that, especially given their very optimistic pricing.
