My local paper ran an op-Ed soon after she was elected saying that Mexico’s recent court reforms (turning many into elected positions) were tantamount to a dictatorial takeover (somehow) and forgot to bury the part about how the new courts won’t be so favorable to business. Sounded like the first wave of manufacturing consent.

Ok I know controversial person but James C Scott has a lecture on KZbin called The Golden Age of Barbarians. The thesis is basically at some points city-states cut deals with their barbarians. The deal goes like this, you stop attacking us and instead we pay you to go out further into the hinterland and catch slaves for us (and generally pillage the hinterlands for stuff we'll buy from you). This is how I understand the relationship between the US (city-state), cartels (their barbarians), and rural Latin America and the Indios and campesinos (the hinterlands). Same old story just recast with new actors.
