It is like Lupin says, Harry has so much more than everyone else. He witnessed his parents be murdered, after spending time in hiding. Then he is taking to an abusive household, where he is tortured for 10 years, after spending who knows how long in his wreaked bedroom with his mother’s corpse. Before Hogwarts the closest thing he has to a friend is Mrs Figg and her cats. He doesn’t even remember being hugged! Neville never saw his parents torture, but he lived with the torture of seeing what was done to them most of his life, but he had remaining family who loved him. Ginny also had problems with the dementors after her first year, but she had a loving family to help her through it. Luna also had her dad and still had memories of her mother.

Harry really just wants to protect himself, and I couls see a martial arts instructor, maybe with a young teen that has an abusive parent or something, hesitating, but ultimately giving in to the child's determination to master extremely challenging and complex moves as they strive to be able to protect themself against a very real threat.

Crazy fan theory: Hagrid rescues the cat and Harry at the same time and ends up taking the cat to a friend who advises him to take him to Mrs Figg. While traveling he stops at a pub for a pint first and others find out the story about Harry’s survival and Lily and James’ fate. At the same time everyone learns Harry looks like James and has the scar (why everyone recognizes him immediately his whole life). Mrs Figg eventually takes the Potter’s cat to the magical menagerie when it’s getting time to send Harry to school, assuming since Harry has seen pics his whole life he will get his cat back, but Hagrid gets him an owl instead. Magical menagerie lady doesn’t allow his cat out for sale until Harry finally enters the shop with Ron and Hermoine and Crookshanks recognizes Peter and immediately takes action. Supporting the Crookshanks is the Potter’s cat theory.
@kimgrod3 ай бұрын
Ooo, good theory!
@d227772 ай бұрын
My addition/modification is that Crookshanks is the offspring of the Potter's cat. Mrs Figg breeds half-kneazles and it's entirely possible that the parent cat "told" their kid about Sirius and Peter. And Crookhanks got to the pet store 2-3 years before Harry and co (that can be a long time for a pet not to be adopted hence the "ages" comment.)

I kinda think Hagrid was just instantly charmed by baby Harry. He was just so in love he holed himself up somewhere in secret to cuddle and play with the baby. Felt like he needed it after such a fright. Possibly even purchased the blanket that Harry is wrapped in because the house was blown apart I imagine nothing was worth salvaging. My headcanon is that whether Harry got Hogsmeade permission or not, the twins had either decided a while back that he should have the Map or it was a sympathy gift for him losing the Nimbus. I don't think they only gave it to him because he couldn't get out of the school.

I always thought that the twins gave the map to Harry because he’s a rule breaker like them and the marauders. Harry is always mixed up in chaotic happenings (troll, philosophers stone, flying the car to school, chamber of secrets) so he’d use the map for mischief as it was intended. So I agree, they’d give it to Harry whether he had permission or not, he’s the natural successor.

I heard someone else put it a different way--- In this moment, Harry has two big brothers. He's family. They see him struggling and they want to help him have a good time. Sometimes, it can be that simple.
@Vincent.E.M.Thorn.Author3 ай бұрын
On the "Fred and George never bring up Peter Pettigrew" thing, I think it's much simpler than your theory about the Marauders. The duo tell Harry they don't need the map because they've memorized all the secrets, and you yourselves said that implies they don't use it to look for people. And even if they did, they'd be on the lookout for Filch or teachers, or something, not checking the Griffindor dormitories to see who's sleeping.
@marcinz.35703 ай бұрын
Yep, they probably checked the griffindor tower in their first days to check if there are any secrets, and later never bothered to look at it again because, I mean, why really? BUT I still think the theory that marauders can’t be seen on the map by random ppl is good. Both explanations work and it’s not like they contradict each other

You've mentioned several times how Sirius is using the Honneydukes passage, but that's never how I read it. I've always assumed he was using the Shrieking Shack - Whomping Willow passage every time he is coming to the castle because that's the one that isn't guarded. He can press the knot in the tree from the inside and gets help from Crookshanks to get back in, if he doesn't just use a stick or something.
@coolnerdlll60533 ай бұрын
Either way makes equal sense. It's just a difference of interpretation.
@christinabrock28932 ай бұрын
I agree, on the condition that Sirius also knows of a way to get from the Whomping Willow to the inside of the castle without using the regular doors. Because that's the main drawback of the Shrieking Shack passage; it only gets him onto the grounds.
@Blixthand2 ай бұрын
@@christinabrock2893 Somehow I find it more likely that Sirius knows a way into the castle from the grounds than that he on at least 2 different occasions managed to break into (and presumably out of) Honeydukes without anyone noticing. He would know not only the passages that leads to places outside the grounds, but also in and out of the castle. And Harry does see Crookshanks and Sirius together on at least one, maybe two occasions, in the grounds, and I don't think Hermione would just let Crookshanks loose in the grounds like that, so there must be some door or passage open in and out of the castle, and Sirius being in the grounds either means he used the Willow passage those times, or we're upping the number of times he broke into Honneydukes to 3-4 and also admitting he has a way in and out in order to get out to the grounds and back into the witch statue.

@@phillipmonson1003 I'm not saying that the movie version is accurate, I know the book version is just a piece of parchment. My thought about others not collapsing at the quidditch match is that the dementors came in from above and Harry was higher up than most of the people. So there were enough dementors to make others collapse, but they were driven off quickly while most of them were still fairly distant, but Harry got a much more direct encounter with them. I guess Cedric must be fairly resistant to the dementors, but that does seem reasonable from what we know of him.
@sawanna5083 ай бұрын
In the book the Dementors don't fly around they just hover above the ground. So the audience is actually closer to the Dementors then the Quidditch players. The reason why no one else fainted could be that the audience had still so many posstive emotions in them from the game they also were among their friends so that could be the reason why they were not effected that much. Also we should not forget that the book is written from Harry's POV and at the moment the Dementors appear Harry has no time to pay much attention to his suroundings. We also know the vision is bad because of the rain. Since Malfoy is making fun of Harry for collapsing I wouldn't tell anyone if I passed out. So it could be some one else fainted and we just don't know.

1:36:30 I don't think that the Potters were under the Fidelius charm for a year. If they were, Lily wouldn't be writing to Sirius, she'd just talk to him the next time he visited. This suggests that the Potters were under some sort of protection that makes visiting a bit inconvenient. Not so inconvenient that Batilda Bagshod couldn't spend days with them, but enough that you don't just visit your isolated friends after work to chat for a few minutes. Lily's letter mentioning that James was under stress from not being able to leave the house may have prompted Sirius to talk to Dumbledore about the Invisibility Cloak, and have the latter suggest using the Fidelius Charm instead. The way the charm is described in this chapter, the secret seems to have been that "the Potters are hiding in Godric's Hollow" and not "the Potters' house can be found at 123 Fourth Street, Godric's Hollow." That secret would let them safely leave the house if they stayed in their town. I think it is plausible that Dumbledore hired James to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts for the 1980-81 school year. Dumbledore would have needed the position filled anyway, and James couldn't have done much else for the Order under the circumstances. Having the Potters live at Hogwarts would also make it clear to Snape that Dumbledore was protecting Lily, encouraging him to keep spying for the Order. Then James quits when he finds out that Dumbledore hired Snape to teach Potions the next year. That would explain why the Potters weren't considering using the Fidelius Charm until summer or fall of 1981. And Dumbledore hiring Snape might have made James doubt his judgement right around that time, contributing to the decision to choose Sirius/Peter as Secret Keeper instead.

Late as always, but I think I know whats going on with the Honeydukes passage. Hogwarts, as established, is a medieval castle somewhere in probably Scotland. It was not uncommon at the time for castles to act as village fortifications as well as just a large home for the local noble, so in order to protect the villagers there would have needed to be ways for people to escape in and out in times of crisis that would not be evident to the enemy, especially during (fairly common) sieges. The Honeydukes passage is almost certainly one of those. It also would have acted as a way to ferry supplies in and out of the grounds. More than likely, it fell into disuse after the age ended since things would have just been safer; its far easier to drive a carriage up to the castle than ferry boxes of supplies on foot. Ordinarily they would collapse, but its likely there's some kind of impervious charm or some other similar thing to keep the passage from dilapidation. The docks would have filled a similar role, though I suspect those were mostly for shipments and not actually security. The Whomping Willow passage may also be one of these, or a newer construction since it sounds like the shack and the tree were added at the same time, but I might just be confusing things. If you want a really cool instance of castles being used like this in real life, you should go read about Black Agnus, who held off the British for months using passageways, good resource management, and psychological warfare.

Yes, yes, I know she still has the Trace on her, but if they'd been able to figure out a way to remove it, or the quest happened one year later, then she'd have gone. Let's face it, they wouldn't have been able to stop her from coming. We kinda know this from the fact that she wouldn't let her parents/the Order send her home before the Battle of Hogwarts, and when Harry needs the RoR, she just runs out of there, into the battle, already casting a spell as she literally runs off the page. Just an idea, because I personally LOVE Book Ginny, and I feel that Bonnie Wright would've done Book Ginny justice if Film Ginny was written well, and was the bad-ass she was supposed to be. I don’t really see how they could get rid of the trace, seems beyond abilities of any particular person, especially outside of the ministry. If there was anyone they would have removed the trace for it would have been harry, while srimgeour was still alive and tried to help. Would have to be a one year later scenario.

About the broom beyond repair. The repair charme might not be able to fix something if to many pieces are missing. If I imagine the pristles of the broom broken into smaller twigs and splinters it must be very difficult to finde them all even with a summoning spell especially with twigs from the womping willow around as well. Hagrid drinking a literal gallon of mead makes sense given his size. There’s all these stories about how much Andre the Giant could drink without getting drunk. It took six bottles of wine just to get him buzzed. Factor in Hagrid is actually part giant and I doubt that much mead would even affect him

My headcannon is that the part of Voldemort’s soul in Harry reacts to the dementors, which is why Harry is so effected. He is experiencing two soul’s worth of depression. It is also why he can hear his mother; infants would not be able to hold onto those memories, but Voldemort may be reliving the moment of his death

Godric’s Hollow and James and Lily putting Harry to bed only for Voldemort to attack… Hagrid picking up Harry, Sirius and Peter dueling on a Muggle Street, the wizards celebrating and the Muggle News mentioning its early for Guy Fawkes celebrations, intercut with scenes of the Dursley’s. Leave out all the crucial information we need later, but giving just enough to introduce you to the two totally different worlds in this universe would be EPIC! For it to end with Harry being dropped off at Privet Drive. Think of that series premiere.

Hey Brother.~ So, the whole Hagrid missing for a day thing. I always figured Dumbledore gave Hagrid orders to ride around with Harry for a day or something after rescuing him from the cottage, as a way to make any counter attacks from DeathEaters less likely. I forget which book its mentioned, but Dumbledore I believe admits at some point that he was concerned the DeathEaters would go after Harry once it was confirmed that Voldemort was missing. Thus, Hagrid is ordered to go into hiding for a day while Dumbledore gets things ready for Harry to live at Privite Drive.

Hey brother. Love this podcast. Going through a really tough time in my life rn and this podcast is the highlight of my week I check my YT notifications about 5 times every Sunday and click on the video immediately I love all the extra theories that have come out of this project as well as all the running jokes like the basilisk ripping spider webs or malfoy being so freaking repetitive in his jokes and obsessed with harry maybe that's why everyone ships Drarry so much? Question why was Peter put into gryffidor given he was such a coward and never had a backbone of his own or any brave/noble acts to speak of I suppose one could count his death as brave but ultimately that's Voldemorts power in the gifted hand not of his own volition he only just barely hesitated to attack/kill harry. So yea why griffyindoor for such a cowardly scared afraid person?
@cjg87632 ай бұрын
HEY BROTHERS! Here's a thought I've had for a while, starting with a quick question: WHEN did Dumbledore send the second Phoenix feather to Olivander? Do we know? Dumbledore had to have known Tom Riddle got the first wand. I'm sure Olivander probably wrote to him as soon as it sold, just as he let him know right after selling Harry his wand. WHAT IF Dumbledore sent the second feather AFTER the Trelawney prophecy, curious to see if the boy who could defeat the dark lord himself might just end up with it. Maybe Dumbledore's big plan includes Harry getting that wand, the twin to Voldemort's wand. Maybe he knew the effects of Priori Incantatem would one day save him by buying him some time. Did Dumbledore have a hunch it would just unfold that way, or at least have a big hope that it would, seeing as destiny has already intertwined the two wizards via the prophecy? Did elder wand magic lay out an insurance policy to ensure Harry gets that second wand? (Could Dumbledore have foreseen the soul attachment happening even before it did and hope THAT would also help Harry in getting the wand?) Or is all of this just ridiculous and he gave the two feathers at the same time totally unaware of the future holders of the wands made with them? I'm loving listening to these while I work, by the way! Wish I'd bought Seattle tickets but I didn't, but I will definitely be listening as always.

1:37:26 I’m pretty sure Sirius can visit the Potter while they are in hiding. In think it says in Lily’s letter that it’s sad Sirius couldn’t be at Harry’s birthday, but that the order has to come first, so I just think he was unfortunately on a mission at that point. It would also make no sense if only Peter could visit them, because then everyone would know he was the secret keeper and the whole plot of this book revolves around the reveal that Peter was the secret keeper and not Sirius, but if Sirius couldn’t visit them, then that would just have been a well known fact within the Order.

I probably could have and then just eaten it on the plane. Ended up throwing it away cuz it was melting and I didn’t have a bag or anything to put it in. Edit to add: How influential is Lucious Malfoy? Well he's got Fudge so deep in his pocket he doesn't need to use the Imperious Curse on him to control him after Voldemort's return Omg I had that watching the Olympics experience happen when watching the mens’ 4x100 relay. The reason Harry is the only one who passes out could be because the dementors are pulling his memory out of his subconscious. Even though others had also terrible memories they were able to process it. Also Harry doesn't generally pass out due to dementors. Only in this book I don't think that Harry hears "Voldemorts worst memory" because in OotP his current worst memory is Voldemort telling Harry to bow to his death

First, I read this chapter again last night, and i thought it'd be obvious that Lupin gives in to Harry here because from Lupin's perspective, he's seeing his friend James' son in trouble and feels an obligation to help him because he couldn't help James. Secondly, Fudge says "You-know-who alone and friendless is one thing, but give him back his biggest supporter". As of this chapter, he's aware Voldemort is alive, and by the end of the next book he 180's. What's up with that, if not the Imperius Curse?

Okay, Harry fell 50 feet. When you fall, after the first second you are going 32 ft/sec. After the second second, you are going 64 ft/second. Dumbledore would have to utter a very fast incantation for it to work, and it can't be verbal. Even from one hundred feet. Harry would be very close to the ground by that time. What is necessary to know about the fall is if the spell works like an acrobat's net at a circus? Or is it like a brick wall? Can it be varied? Dumbledore doesn't have much leeway to catch Harry. If it's like a circus net, then you are still going to land with a "whump" that could possibly knock the wind out of you. I would keep Harry in the infirmary for a few days to keep a watchful eye on him for recovery and to see if anything happens that would develop from any possible internal injuries. Besides, you know how Madam Pomphrey doesn't like quidditch.

21:55 it almost seems like the actual difference between Harry and the other students, the reason he gets truly tormented by the Dementors, is the years of abuse he experienced from the Dursleys. No other students were raised in perpetual psychological torture and emotional abuse.

Afterthought: The Dementors even align somewhat with the Dursleys in the archetype of cruel wardens. Harry feels some kinship to Serius, because they both spent all the years since Voldemort's fall imprisoned and tormented; the Dursleys were Harry's Dementors for years (they still sort of are).

My question: They planted the Whomping Willow the year Lupin arrived at Hogwarts, and, eventually Lupin befriends the rest of the marauders, and, quite some time after that, they learn about animagi (possibly during their first transfiguration lesson of their third year?), and then they eventually learn how to become animagi themselves, and then they finally pull off actually doing so. So, who was letting Lupin into the shack before then? Who's job was it to poke the knot on the root that stopped the tree before and after each full moon? And, once the marauders took over, how is it that this person didn't notice they weren't going and supervising a werewolf transformation each month anymore? Did Lupin just walk up and say, "I got better" and no one questioned it? Surely they didn't just entrust the 11 year old werewolf to be completely self sufficient and manage to get past the Whomping Willow by himself with no adult support or supervision? Then again, this is Hogwarts, and child endangerment isn't that unexpected, but still. Also, for that matter, I can't believe the title of "most haunted building in all of Europe" would a) be accepted without anyone actually trying to verify it and b) deter anyone from visiting it anyways in a culture where assigning ghosts to each of the school houses is considered perfectly normal.

It's stated in the book that the secret passage was created by the Hogwarts faculty for Remus. Either a teacher or Madame Pomfrey escorted Remus to the passage each month, where he proceeded on to the Shrieking Shack to transform. The rest of the Marauders got to the Shack either before or after.

@pageblank33232 ай бұрын
It’s definitely a plot hole but I’ve headcanoned for years that Sirius WAS secret keeper for most of the time, and at the last second got nervous and convinced them to actively change the spell to switch secret keepers. So yeah, I basically think the charm requires a caster and a keeper, they can’t be the same person, and becoming keeper is life-threatening (if it’s not cast right) and painful which is why ppl don’t use this charm very often, so Dumbledore was the caster and Sirius was the keeper but then when they switched, Sirius was caster and Peter was keeper. That way, before the switch Sirius could’ve told Dumbledore, Bathilda, and Peter the secret so they could visit, and after only Peter and Sirius could but no one else would’ve tried bc it all happened so quickly. IMO the reason Sirius was even worried is bc the charm would only count something as coercion in the short term (basically if you’re able to calm down, the low level stress of war/ppl you love being in danger wouldn’t count) so if he was forced to choose between protecting the Potter’s or someone else he loved (in this case I’m assuming Remus for Wolfstar reasons, and also bc damn near everyone else he cares about is dead or part of the Fidelius charm shenanigans at this point) and was given an extended period of time to sit with that knowledge and choose, the charm wouldn’t prevent it bc it would consider that an informed decision. Basically the same thing for Peter isn’t it? If he only told bc he knew Voldemort would kill him if he didn’t, then the spell clearly doesn’t consider that kind of stress coercion. Unless Peter had said no and Voldemort directly threatened his life it’s just him choosing his own life over theirs. Or I mean, you could assume that Peter just wanted them dead but given the fact that Lily says he seems sad about all the deaths happening in her letter, I doubt that.
