Hello J and Ben, I hold a PhD in Astrophysics and can confirm that what you’re saying about the full moon is accurate. The full moon reaches 100% illumination for only a brief moment. While it appears "full" for about two days before and after this moment, the actual point of 100% illumination lasts only an instant.

You mean maximum illumination? Because the sun is a lot bigger than the moon, so it shines on >50% of the surface, so full moon should last quite a while.

One of my favorite forgotten Ron moments is in this chapter. He takes the little owl Sirius gifted him, and holds him up to Crookshanks to take a sniff. Just to make totally sure he is an owl. It shows that he trusts both Crookshanks and Hermione's judgment again, and that he's sorry he didn't do so earlier. Ron doesn't always use the words, but his actions always show it. Those speak far louder, and prove he really took the lesson to heart. Which is far more than I can say for a lot of people I've known in my life.

I think as the epilog is in 2017, when Harry is 37 and wizzards regularly live to be older than 100 there is still time he can be a teacher who can tell A BUNCH of cool stories to his students about his adventures as an auror.

Well, my theory why a stag seemed a strange form for Harry's patronus to Dumbledore at first was because he knew that Snape's patronus was a doe because of Lily. The night when they arranged Snape killing him couldn't have been the first time he's seen Snape's patronus - I can't imagine he could have worked with him for years and not seen it at least once. So without knowing that James turned into a stag the coinsidence was probably pretty weird to him.

As for the foreshadowing of Harry sitting in Lupins vacated chair, I think it's a silly hill to die on that he needed to be the DADA teacher *immediately* after the war. Let him be an Auror for 20 years or so **then** become the professor, I think that's perfectly reasonable

I can see him waiting all his children to finish their Hogwarts time and THEN go to teach DADA there. I'm imagining that Lily is at most 2 years younger than Albus; meaning that from the epilogue time, she would finish at Hogwarts 9 or 10 years after. Harry would be 46/47. So at 48 years old, Harry would take on the post of DADA teacher

People who go straight to teaching positions straight after college, without real world experience are worst teachers possible and I can't take them seriously. (TBH Harry already had a lot of experience in the field by his 18th birthday but would still benefit from actual Auror job)

He says that he believes Snape worked so hard to protect him (for example, with the broom) because he couldn’t stand being in James’ debt. This leaves an interesting thread that this ‘I saved your life’ debt can be paid off, but afterwards Snape kept protecting Harry because of Lily

Yes, it feels like a purposeful critic on UK politics but aside from that there is some truth in worrying about the press. As a good example of it is the leader of NASA in The Martian who needs to worry about the press because 1 bad decision could lead to many people getting sacked. Fudge, you could argue, wants good press because the escape of Black frightened many citizens and probably caused some sort of problems within day to day life. This book now has even more meaning to me :D I had a great experience inspired by it and I'll remember it forever! I'm educating as a high school teacher and as a part of it I'm at a school teaching every Monday and I have a student who struggles to present in front of the class. She also generally struggles just talking to me and my classmates from the education. I talked to her and asked her if she knew Harry Potter and when she said yes I asked if she remembers the boggart lesson with Lupin and she said she did. I asked her to either draw or print out a classroom and an examination room with people on it and basically told her to then dress them up in funny clothes and decorate the room with stuff that makes her happy or laugh and then when she presents she can think about her drawings and say "Ridiculous" in her mind and if she at some point feels like it's not going well take a deep breath and think of "Ridiculous" again. Two weeks later I asked her if she had done the drawings and she no but she had presented in front of the class and picturing people in funny clothes and saying "Ridiculous" in her mind had helped her a lot. She said she's gonna keep doing that and then we high-fived :D

I always thought Dumbledore's comment about patronus wasn't about how unusual his patronus was for Harry but how unusual his patronus was in general for the wizarding world as, according to Pottermore, the form reflects the person, and the most common are the forms of the more common animals. A stag, while a rather well-known animal in the UK, is still perceived as somewhat extraordinary as they are often considered to be kings of the forest and are considered to be rather majestic

What if the reason that "loads of wizards have died from time travel" is because they tried to change something rather than being a participant in it's change. For example, when Hermione stops Harry from grabbing the cloak at the base of the tree. If she hadn't, what if the act of changing that killed Harry? Other than it meaning that Hermione saved Harry several times that night, it would explain how wizards could get themselves killed AND keep with "everything that's happened has already happened."

Ah finally done with book three and about to start book four. For me, book four was a difficult read. Tried three times to get past this book but each time I finished Chapter 23 something stopped me. First time was cataracts, second time was retinal detachment, retinal tear and complete blindness (which I am proud to say my sight was saved each time, both cataract and retinal detachment). Then on my third attempt i guess I was reading the three books by memory at that point but again, Chapter 23 of Goblet was as far as I got, and reading became an issue due to the oil gel in my that now holds the retina in place blurring the standard print book. So, I found the Libby library app and started reading the books as eBooks, now I can make the print large enough to read it. I started on the eBooks the September before this podcast started and what a journey! I just finished BOOK 7 a week before you guys finished book three on the podcast. I also thought that the patronus wasn't fully formed (so it only resembled a stag) at the quidditch game and that Dumbledore only realised it was a stag after he knew that that was James' animagus form. About the moon theory: What if the moon doesn’t trigger transformation before its 100% but if you get hit by direct moonlight before its completely full (the same night it will be) it will trigger your transformation a little early. So if the transformation would happen at 2 in the morning even if he’s in a dark room it could happen in the late evening if there’s no clouds. (And I assume the darker it is the more moonshine will hit you and you don’t get triggered while it’s still light because sun counter balances it a bit.) Lupin could have assumed he’d have a fair few hours left until transformation if it was just evening. And he might not have known about the early trigger or forgot because he’s always been so careful about keeping himself away.

Where did you get the idea that Remus was like a father figure? He spent most of the year keeping up a professional teacher-student relationship with Harry and didn't reveal his friendship with James until circumstances forced it. And while Remus is a good teacher, he wasn't responsible when it came to student safety in regards to an escaped criminal. Rather than risk disappointing Dumbledore, he keeps quiet about Sirius being an Animagus and any possible ways that he could have snuck into Hogwarts. Yes, it turned out Sirius was innocent and Wormtail the actual traitor, but imagine how disastrous it could have turned out if that hadn't been the case. And the fact that Remus doesn't keep up contact with Harry, not even with the events in GoF, shows that he's not interested in being a father figure. At least in OotP Remus has the excuse of not writing due to letters possibly being intercepted and in HBP he has the excuse of being undercover with the other werewolves. Even if you argue that he's too poor to afford parchment and ink, well Sirius was on the run for an entire year and still managed to write to Harry.
@keithg4602 ай бұрын
I always felt like the books did a bad job with Lupin's and Sirius's character development. Lupin does sort of act like a father figure to Harry in year 3, yet he is never treated like that later in the series, and Harry doesn't expect gifts or anything from him. Yet Sirius was not treated like a father figure in book 3, he was seen as an enemy, but then suddenly Harry is writing to him in the summer and thinking of him as a proxy father. In book 4, his scar hurts, and Harry feels that the best person to write to is Sirius. What? How? It almost seems like Lupin and Sirius' character development swapped between books 3 and 4.
@inkaviolet2 ай бұрын
@@keithg460 agree on character development part. But I've always thought Harry's trust in Sirius was motivated by fact that he was his actual godfather and person whom his parents WANTED to take care of him. Also there was this time, before Hogwarts, when he dreamed about somebody with real power to take him from Dursleys, and Sirius had that power, even if they both knew there was obstacles - Sirius probably was actually aware, at least in book 5, that Harry can't left Privet Drive until Voldemort is defeated, that might be one of reasons why he was so gloom then. Remus had no such power.

In Order of the Phoenix (the book) it was Sirius that Harry thought about that freed him from possession. Only in the movie did it include memories of Ron and Hermione. 1:40:58 idk why Jay keeps saying he thinks Pig is stolen. Harry buys his owl from a shop, they intend to buy Hermione an owl from a shop. We already know Sirius bought the broomstick. What’s to say he didn’t also buy Pig. And he says “it’s the best I could do” because he probably doesn’t want to just walk into an owl emporium (he’s still considered a convicted murderer and escaped felon) and maybe he just ordered an owl and that was the best he could find while on the run? I’m not saying it’s not possible that he could have stolen him but it seems more likely he’d have purchased him. If he’s gonna take the money out of the vault to buy the world’s most expensive broomstick, surely he can afford a wee baby owl, right? And can an owl be “stolen?” If it’s already owned by someone can’t it just…. Fly back to the owner? Like if someone stole hedwig, she’d just…. Fly back to Harry. If Pig previously belonged to someone, I’m not sure he can be stolen and regifted to Ron.

Hey guys! I just wanted to point out one thing that you guys have mentioned a couple times in the last couple podcasts. A true full moon can only ever be seen at night as it always rises at sunset and sets at sunrise. It’s always on the opposite side of earth to the sun, that’s why it’s full! Also, I like to think that Lupin only becomes a wearwolf during the time where the moon is completely full, which is technically only an instant. It helps clear up the whole cloud cover problem anyways. Edit: I do have a degree in Astro and commented this before the review😭

1:42:45 As far as getting the gold out of the vault, I think Sirius must have given crookshanks his vault key. The key is enough for the goblins to let anyone get the gold out.

Things to remember about lunar astronomy: you're dealing with high latitudes so times are way late. For June in Scotland and looking at the calendar: June 23rd, 1994 sunset time of 10:03pm, rising the following day at 4:27am. On the day of the full moon, the moon rises exactly at sunset and sets the following day at sunrise... everywhere. It's just the sunrise and sunset time that vary. As the moon doesn't get fully full until the height of its passage across the sky, it would be around 1:15am when the full moon would work its magic on Lupin. Geez... Execution at sunset would be a late night for everyone and would also explain why Dumbledore was wanting a large brandy: it was right before bed

13:54 Harry will go on to say how Snape helped him. I’m pretty sure Harry gets Snape’s portrait put up in the Headmaster’s Office.

I think Lily Molly Potter would've been great. Named after both of her grandmothers, and while Molly is still alive, it's kept in the family

Percy named one of his two daughters Molly, so there's already a namesake. Not to mention that Ginny's middle name is also Molly.

Wild to think Sirius's vault (711) is only two away from 713 where the stone was kept.

5:53 It depends how big the newspaper is, but all rolled up and using the biggest available owls they might be able to have one owl carry multiple newspapers. Though even then it might require a rather large number of owls for delivery to be completed.

The name Fred Jr was actually already taken by George and Angelina's kid. And in my headcanon, I've always imagined him being friends with the second James Potter. And now there's this duo that's a weird combo of the marauders and the Wesley twins running around causing mischief

I think Dumbledore would think a more obvious patronus for harry would be an animal that flies, because in his first couple years in school it was so important how he was good at flying

I think I have an explanation for the 'cat ordering the broomstick out of somebody's vault' problem. I'm having my PoA book repaired at the moment so I can't check, but didn't you say that Sirius's vault was actually #711? That means Gringotts doesn't have names on the vault doors, it just has numbers; that's why Hagrid was able to retrieve the Philosopher's Stone in book 1 from vault #713, simply because he had the right key. I suppose the keys have some kind of a 'password protection' on them and the vault's rightful owner would be able to pass their key to an emissary if they wish, even if that emissary was a cat. I guess that means that Dumbledore was the rightful owner of vault #713 and he delegated the right to open it to Hagrid, while the vault itself belonged to either Hogwarts (as an institution) or the Dumbledore family

I think you missed the point of the reviews suggestion. It suggests, that the moon doesn't become full till the particular moment where the cloud happens to shift. So it has nothing to do with moonlight, but simply that every werewolf transforms at that exact moment, and that they are then in that state, either till the night is over or for a particular time frame or what not. The reason Rowling wrote the "a cloud shifted" was to not have some bad writing like "Lupin froze and started convulsing, the moon had become full"

1:46:04 Wouldn't it be hilarious to imagine someone coming into Gringotts with a note that says something like "I, Mr Sirius Black, do hereby officially authorize Mr Crookshanks to retrieve a 100,000 galleons from Vault 711", and then next time Sirius wants to buy a present for Harry, the goblins have to inform him that there is simply no gold left in his vault to pay for it? XD XD XD

I think in terms of the Patronus, I believe I read somewhere (probably Pottermore?) that the most common ones are horses, cats & dogs because humans have over the years made the closest relationships with these animals. I think that’s what Dumbledore means by “unusual”.

1:07:15 ok, slight addition to the time turner functionality that just popped into my head (in the vein of “maybe not everything, but something very similar”): second-pass you has the power to do whatever you want, but if you deviate too far from what already happened (if Harry takes the invisibility cloak before Snape can, if they take Buckbeak before Fudge & Co. see him, if first-pass Harry sees second-pass Harry, eytc.), then it can cause irreparable harm. Like, they have an amount of freedom (it probably wouldn’t matter if Harry stepped off with his right foot vs his left), but if they don’t hit key points (show up at the lake looking like James, for example) it’ll fall apart.

It's crazy to be at the end of book 3 already. I also feel like this just started, but at the same time this podcast has become part of my daily routine since it's the perfect thing for me to fall asleep to 😂 I'm weirdly proud that you guys have more appreciation for Prisoner of Azkaban now--it's always been my favorite book and I'm glad you guys can see more of its merit now 😊 It's amazing how big the rest of the books are--you got through the first 3 in just over a year, but like you point out, it's going to be most of a year per book for the next 4!
